I've been wanting to get into WL, so I started doing some snatch drills (snatch push press, snatch balance, hang snatches, power snatches, overhead squats).
Just with the bar, some even just with a broomstick at home.

Now my left shoulder is cracking and popping even with normal, small movements.
It's not painful, but there is a slight discomfort.

After 4 years of lifting this is the first time I have issues with my shoulder.

Could it be that my shit mobility forces me into a compromising position?

You need much warm up and mobility work before EVERY snatch workout.

I *can* do overhead squats with a snatch grip, with my index finger right outside the ring marks is about as close as I can get.

The usual shoulder mobility assessments show that mobility is quite shitty though.

I've been doing mobility work daily (mainly dislocates for shoulders) for months, but I've not seen much improvement...

Help me /owg/, I don't know how to clean.

Little bit of background, only been at it for about six months, but I feel like I "get" and understand the snatch. It's become a natural and intuitive motion to me, and if I'm doing something wrong on a particular day, I can reason through to the cause based on my instinct and knowledge of lifting mechanics.

Not so with the clean, and the problem is that I can't keep from slamming the bar into my thighs and losing all power using anything resembling orthodox form, no doubt partially because of my monkey arms. No matter what adjustments I make, I can't accomplish these three things in a single attempt:
> keep bar very close to body, particularly during the explosion (or whatever you care to call it)
> get decent power, bar elevation, and "oomph"
> use a grip width that is too narrow to be used seriously for snatching
I can get "oomph" and a natural-feeling motion by widening my grip to the point it should only be used for snatches (pointer fingers on the lines at 5'7" tall),
OR
I can keep the bar further away from my body, CoG over toes, bar two inches or more away from body during the explosion.

I can't think of any high level lifter other than that one chinese girl who use such a wide grip on the clean, nor anyone who keep the bar so far away from their bodies, even if there are a few who don't quite make contact with hips or legs. Keeping the bar away from my body feels totally natural and lets me pull more than widening my grip to the extreme, but I'm guessing the stress on my back will be too much once I graduate from baby weight. Grip width increase is such that the bar makes gentle contact with my hip crease; anything less and the bar crashes into my upper leg prior to the explosion, forcing me to bend my elbows and sapping all power from the lift. I've spent days upon days trying new things and fixing problems successfully in the snatch, but no amount of reasoning or effort has gotten me anywhere with the clean.

he was light on programming tips but was impressed with people who taught themselves the lifts like girth brooks

he said I had good technique which I was surprised about because I really didn't at the time before our resident fat chinaman started critiquing my lifts

then I saw his crossfit athletes and I understood that my technique was good in comparison

The team got first place in the first Project Lift Weightlifting League Series. Total points earned over 3 meets in 3 months.

They earned it. They worked hard, toughed it out, and ultimately placed their faith in my instruction. I am very proud of each of them, and I am honored to be their coach.

The team had a really good meet, except Drake who bombed out on snatch. Possibly because his dad was there. Crushed shit in warmups and we timed his warmups like perfectly. Went up to 125 in the back and then lost 130 behind him, not staying over the bar long enough. I called for 135 as he should have been good for at least 140 that day, but the pressure was just too much and he crumbled for the last two attempts.

Unfortunate, but the awful taste of failure is one of the best teaching tools. He's a little mopey about it, but he's been graceful about it. He even apologized to the audience for cussing after he missed that third snatch. 171-176 in cj then missed 183, which would have been a new state record for the 105 weight class.

I had to drag him out of bed with his girl to work out tonight at like 10pm lol. Like no motherfucker you did not earn a day off. You get your ass in the gym right goddamn now. I didn't cuss like that, of course, but I made my expectations clear and he had a good workout. High hopes for state championships in August.

Actually he's way better now! I got him all socialized just like a cat lol. After I put him in his place in kentucky that one time, he's been meshing with the team's culture quite well, taking instruction well, and being generally more tolerable. Good guy, just needs structure. He weighed in at 76.0something. so basially a full 69 lol. If he stays healthy I might have him compete at 69 in august.

The calf is a burn from a 4wheeler accident. I hit a branch that got kicked out in the trail and it went through the front fender, impacted my leg, shoved it through the rear fender, and pinned it directly on the muffler, which is what stopped me. Hit that fucker at like 20 miles an hour dude straight to dead stop. No time to brake or maneuver at all. Got a third degree burn that looks like africa. I'm lucky it didn't break my leg. We're all lucky it was me and not one of the other guys who are older and not in as good of shape. Less bone density and all that
