I'm from Singapore and the gym culture there is pretty okay. Lots of commercial gyms (big chains are well established) with decent number of squat racks. Crossfit still hasn't hit. Like 2million martial arts gyms exist though and seem to be the workout of choice- I actually did MT before lifting. Hoping HK is the same in terms of gym and pricing.

Japan's gold's gym was amazing, so clean and everyone had manners. Good luck in HK m8. When O was there, there was a pretty well equipped commercial gym line all over the city. Forgot the name but they seemed to have WL platforma and all that. However, drop in rates where insane, like 50 usd and they wouldn't let me train there without an ID. I ended up in some weird YMCA gym in TST, had to pay 30 usd still, shitty equipment, 90% old people. Highlight was a middle aged guy wearing a glitter t-shirt with a dragon and the word "SWAG" on it doing shadow boxing whit dumbbells while screaming. 10/10

I've lived in Hong Kong for 2 years. I go to California Fitness which is probably the most popular gym here.
honestly, i wish I had some funny crazy stories to tell but I don't. It's pretty normal. There's plenty of hench guys here, there's your typical cardio bunnies and what have you.
I've had some gay encounters in the sauna there, guys asking to see my dick or trying to come in my shower cubicle but it doesn't happen often
The biggest issue with california fitness is the agressive sales staff. They are always in the news for doing shady stuff, like coercing a man with learning disabilities to sign a hugely expensive contract he couldn't afford, or taking people's cards and billing them without permission.
The PT staff can be aggressive but so long as you make it clear you will never be interested in their bullshit they will leave you alone

The mid range gyms. I can't speak for phyical but you have to be VERY aggressive and careful when you sign for Cali. If you ask me how much it costs to go to Cali I couldn't tell you, they hide EVERYTHING from the consumer. There is no known base price. They give you an inital offer that's way too expensive and they only bring it down when you're about to walk out

you can find nicer expat gyms or regular gyms and kickboxing gyms just search em up they aren't hard to find.
for the actual people that go there, tends to be some really lean Asian guys who are stacked and some who are just skinny ripped, shanghai is a lot bigger than you might think so don't expect to find everything in one place. best to find a foreigner gym and deal with it desu
