You can play soccer and powerlift without competing. You can powerlift all you want without ever even considering entering a meet. But you're not a soccer player / powerlifter unless you compete.

You literally can't be a powerlifter without doing a competition.

This is why if someone asks me if I am a powerlifter, I say "no, but I train for it. I haven't done a competition yet,"

or, "No, but I do powerlifting training,"

etc.

IDK how you can call yourself something you literally aren't.

And even if I did compete, I probably would feel weird about it unless I were really really strong.

>>37496492
>mfw loving the rows / chins memeing.

its like the new hepburn autism.
>>
>>37496474
They're being autistic. If you train bench, squat, and deadlift to be as strong as possible for one rep at the bench, squat, and deadlift, then you're powerlifting. Same with the oly lifts.

The meet is where powerlifters see who is the best powerlifter. The meet does not define them as a powerlifter. Their training and the purpose of their training does.

Personally , I don't define myself by it, but I say "I powerlift" or now, "I olympic lift".

My only issue with calling myself a "powerlifter" or "olympic lifter" is that i feel like I would have to make it my entire life before I could define myself by it. But I have a job, and am a full-time student, and in the past, powerlifting, and now, olympic lifting, were things that I deeply enjoyed, put a great deal of time, effort , and dedication into, but were ultimately only hobbies as work and school had to come first.

So now I "olympic lift" but I don't consider myself an "olympic weightlifter",not because I don't compete, but because I feel like it's place in my life doesn't warrant the title. And I'll still say I olympic lift and competr whenever the hell I please, or not.

I doubt anyone would have an idea here since it's a bit of a unique case, but when I was 2 my brother broke my legs lifting me over a baby gate and falling. My left one didn't heal the same as my right and now my left leg is 1 inch shorter than the other. I kept hurting myself squatting since nobody knew, until I finally realized the problem, and got an insert for my shoe. So now when I'm standing straight my hips are even but my left knee is higher than my right, and then at the bottom of a squat my knee is still higher and I assume my torso is slightly twisted since the left femur is shorter. Surprisingly I've gotten up to a 4 plate squat no issues since I got the insert, which is nice I never made it higher than 225 before. Do I probably have a limit on how much I can safely lift?
Also potentially related, when I'm warming up on squats, my inner quad, vastus medialis I think, on my left leg hurts, but when I get to heavy weight it stops hurting, anyone got any advice?
>>

>I olympic lift as a hobby.

>>
>>37496685
If you work out and come in and strive for "general strength" and "health and fitness", then you workout for a hobby.

I olympic lift for a hobby. Its training to get as strong as possible at the two competitive olympic lifts.

Do you train diving on a regular basis for the purpose of being a diver, and adhere to the standards of the sport?

Then you're a diver.

Do you just go fuck around in a pool?
The no.

Same as:
Do I go to the gym, and train to make myself as strong as possible in the clean and jerk and snatch?
Then I olympic lift.

Do I come to the gym, fuck around, and occasionally do shitty powercleans because I think they look cool or because my crossfit coach told me to?
The no.

"breaking" at the knee is a cue for beginners or people who are technically deficient only. at no point should you be trying to direct the motion of the squat using your knees.

there are no muscles in your knees.

for the highbar, you should be focusing on opening your entire leg along the plane of your toes by flexing the quads and hips

your core should be rigid through your glutes, and your glutes should be fully tightened. they should come in as straight of a line down as possible

"breaking at the knees" is a meaningless phrase taught to people who "sit back" for the squat because it's easy to visualize, but it is NOT the correct way to cue your squat, and it will lead to poor core/glute engagement and weak hips
>>
>>37497184
It's different than how the low bar is traditionally taught to people, and many people have success with less knee travel, but that's how haack squats and he blows all of us out the fuckin water
>>
>>37497217
It seems to me like for low bar the best things to help me are:

(1) keeping butt tight and slowly sitting back with it
(2) tightening / flexing ass on the way up at depth.

>>37497238
I have pretty long legs, so I get pitched over pretty bad in low bar.

High bar is pretty comfy for me, but if I try to squat that way with a lower bar position it will fuck me up I think.

might try this today a little tho.
>>
>>37497217
>>37497043

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rL5XEqyEGpU

Source: Max Aita's own fucking squats. at 1:06 there's a clip of him highbar squatting 240kg. Slow it down to .25x speed and watch it a couple of times.

He does not "break" at the knees, and he does not lead the squat with his knees. Instead, he uses a perfectly straight core and powerful glutes to come as straight down as possible, while using his hips and quads to give his glutes room to come down, while stabilizing the weight on the way down

there should be no "break" in a high bar squat, the muscles should move fluidly, supporting each other
>>
>>37496408
Rows are bad for powerlifters i think, they limit your potential deadlift volume

Id do chest supported rows.

>chest supported rows
Why not just do pullups/chins at that point if you don't want to work posterior chain?
>>
>>37497248
Anything you're not used to will feel uncomfortable until you ingrain the motor patterns.

Don't let this discourage you from trying something new! Don't be afraid to let your knees travel forward, as long as they go out in the direction your toes are already pointing. If they cave in, you'll have some pain.

It's called a seal row. But it's a waste of time and effort to drag out a bench, blocks, barbell, and plates for an accessory movement when you can just do some weighted chins for next to no time and effort. And identical lat involvement as far as quantifiable benefit goes, regardless of what you "feel", as it's impossible do any pulling movement without lats.

>>

"My herniated discs" are not others herniated discs. There are a ton of factors that affect injury significance and recovery, such as level of nerve to compression, degree of protrusion, and so on. You're a fucking retard to even suggest one injury is like all other. That's like saying a paper cut is identical to a knife wound, and that recovery and complications are the same.

>>
>>37497592
Yes, and it is well known that a pretty decent proportion of the population has disc issues in some form or another and most of them are benign and harmless, but that does NOT mean that every situation should be worked through or otherwise ignored. (Look no further than Akkaev claiming MOST of his team required surgery for just such an issue—maybe someone should have told them that most athletes have minor bulges?)

Someone qualified may well have concluded that you were not in a risky situation, but they did so with much more information than you personally have even if you were to see this other guy, which you haven't. That's the thing—you don't know this guy, and you don't know much about spine health—how in the world could you be so irresponsible? It's disgusting. There is no doubt or caution in what you say. Do you have zero self awareness?

I'm fine disagreeing with you about some aspects of lifting. I don't think people are really right or wrong about that, it's a matter of perspective and preference and lots else besides, but THIS is just obscene. I don't care how you approach your own lifting, but at least respect other people's health enough to realize that you know next to nothing about it. This is like those random guys on /fit/ giving advice after a couple of months lifting, except this shit actually matters.

>This is giving me an internet advice existential crisis.
