I want to but I don't know which to do.
Where should I begin?
What should I look for in a studio?
>>

Rather than say what's good it's easier to say what's shit
> anything chinese
> anything korean
> anything russian (except sambo)
> anything japanese (except full contact karate and judo)
> anything israeli
> anything that claims to be military, "real street self-defense" or "too deadly to spar"
>>
>>37449235
There are so many to choose from that's up to you. Begin with google. What you should look for is active fighters that compete at the gym.
>>
I do Muay Thai and Judo already.

sanshou is chinese and works. tae kwon do is not the best but it works

I'm 4th dan TKD, taught by a korean 9th dan and have competed internationally. I can say without a shred of doubt that if I'd invested the same time in muay thai I would be a far better fighter.

read this if you're considering taking up a martial art:

it doesn't really matter which one you pick. either you'll improve on your weak areas, figure what fighting style you tend to, or, improve upon your strengths.

if you're looking for some guidelines though it's safe to say:

>short + stocky = grappling
>short + wiry = muay thai
>tall + wiry = tkd
>tall + stocky = whatever the fuck you want, focus on speed though
>>
>>37449656
Horseshit. Fuck off retard

That explains why the dominant judoka is 204cm
>>
>>37449739
>204 cm and weighs almost 300lbs

even if that wasn't the case, they were just general guidelines for completely clueless people.

there should be a "disarming" martial art where you're just walking down the hall going about your shit and people jump out and attack you with rubber knives and guns at random times of day
>>
>>37450129
that's not true of all gyms. i just started at a local krav dojo and all we've been doing is practicing punches, kicks, elbows, and some releases. we get partnered up for the releases and all of it is done with full pressure chokes. haven't been taught jack about disarms. though you do have a point about the quality control of instructors.

The thing is that there isn't really a clear idea of what KM is because even with a sanctioning body in the US many schools don't teach the same curriculum that was taught to the IDF. And many IDF soldiers don't even take KM seriously, and feel that it had little applicability to combat. Trying to make KM into some kind of god tier martial art because "muh military" is like trying to teach MCMAP as a martial art of its own. Outside of the very specific context in the military, training KM has a lot of opportunity cost.
>>
>>37450423
Yeah that's basically what I see it as; designed as a crash course survival technique, intended to be taught in 6 months or less, specifically used for urban combat with small arms, knives and/or bludgeons.. that's why I'm saying it's not good for street defense - it's more likely you will have to seriously injure or maim your opponent in order to stop them as KM does not have many countering moves that don't involve joint stress or tissue tears
>>
>>37450359
you sound like a tough guy.. should i back the fuck off?!

I don't want you to *grab me by the throat*
>>
Anybody know what catch wrestling is
>>
>>37450454
Well the reality is that very little is effective if you want to teach it in 6 months with only 1 or 2 days training a week. Also you are not a military where you want to sole source all your training, and to be able to teach your own instructors to train soldiers, as opposed to constantly having to find outside instructors. Furthermore in the military you always have shitbags who don't want to think about what they're doing and will unconditionally accept anything the instructor says, so you can't really get instructors teaching them multiple styles and confusing them, so you want to merge the styles beforehand and then package it up as its own thing. As a private individual it's not a problem to find a good boxing gym and a good BJJ school and train at both, and hopefully you're smart enough to think critically and choose the appropriate actions based on your experience in both.

This a million times -- no reason to try anything else. I would probably ditch karate though.

Every person I know who does something from this list is actually pretty good at it and can stand for themselves if needed
(needless to say, most of the time no one even messes with them)
. Meanwhile, 99% of people doing whatever "obscure" or "DURR, SO BRUTAL" shit are fucking pansies who get their shit pushed by average Chad who hasn't done any sports for the past few years.

to increase aggressiveness, and to keep soldiers fit.
they'll fight hand-to-hand against out-of-shape drunks while on leave, at most. never in the field.

K-M is VERY aggressive, boosts up that warrior frame of mind, and all that military feelgood shit, but it's not a serious martial art.

It could definitely be that the majority of places that teach Krav Maga are actually shit, but not all of them are.

As for the other people in this thread claiming it's not a "real martial art", I guess that's a matter of perspective, but I don't know if that's really relevant to the thread, given the things that OP listed.

strengthen your first two knuckles. you're retarded. ever hit the ground in a street fight? you can get your head/chest stomped real quick by enemy's buddies. they call them penalty shots (like in football) Muay thai is bomb because elbows can hit full strength without needing gloves, and cause insane damage.

Bullshit. Im 6'4 and flexible. People get mad with how long my limbs are because there's no escape.

It's not seeking out a street fight, but if a guy is coming at you it's best to know how to defend yourself, especially if you work at a busy inner city bar as I do.

I do. My grandfather learned muay thai in his childhood. He taught it to my mother, my aunt, and three uncles. My mother taught it to my sister and I.

It's pretty fun to learn, and you'll be able to fuck up most people in a fight if you've been doing it for over a decade.

I've been doing it for almost two decades.

Is judo good for fighting?

Is it fun?

There's classes near where I am, and I'd like to do a season or two to give me a fighting base

Is there much of a history that you get taught?

It is graded with belts?

Serious question. I'd say this is my most likely choice if I pick one up.

Mixed judo is good because you get to wrestle with qts.
Brb getting pinned with tatties in you face

how did you get a black belt under the age of 18? That's just stupid. Kids shouldn't even be able to get brown, but w/e. I know in kyokushin/ashihara/enshin (aka full contact) you can only get a bb as an adult. But of course, there's the 30 man kumite test you have to pass to get one, and people under 18 aren't legally allowed to do that.

Sounds interesting. I've been doing Shotokan for 13 years, and I might take up Kyokushin to really improve my fighting.

You mean start.

>>37460463
this is the first move you learn in muay thai, really useful in all situations!
>>

Because unless you're really good at the gymnastics portion of it, there's nothing you can show off. Nobody wants to know how many ways you can kill them. Take up a hobby that you can brag about or something that makes people have a good time like dancing or singing or whatever.

that is a disgustingly bony ass.
