I am. Never made it past the 8th grade.

What's your claim, exactly? You can't self-educate? That it's pointless to read educational material without an instructor?

A classical liberal education is simply a framework, are you really implying that an individual can't follow those principals without the aid of others? The book is the instructor, and the material can be just as easily understood if care is given.

Sorry, but all you're doing with these is accumulating bits of trivia. Which is totally fine, if your goal is to make it on jeopardy some day. If you're after personal development and improvement however, you need to hit your lobes with science fiction, and write your poetry or create an original philosophy.

It takes 0 imagination to remember sone dates some things happened, or to know the latin phrase for some logical fallacy. This is the equivalent of lifting the same weight, with yge same reps, and same sets, every session. You guys need to push yourselves if you want to improve.

>>37229465
Except they are arguments which on the surface make sense because so much counter evidence is absent in the book. You need access to source materials to discredit his arguments.

You can't just reason away wrongness which is presented reasonably. You need to have evidence to hand contrary to the sources which produce erroneous claims.

I'm kinda idiotic in that I barely read or study at all during college because I'm too busy fucking around on the internet and hanging out with my friends because living in the city is absurdly intoxicating to me (I treat being at college like a vacation where I don't do shit.), but every summer I move back in with my parents who live in the middle of nowhere with shitty internet, so I always have a huge blowout of literally nonstop fitness and reading the college textbooks I ignored while I was making C's in my classes. I'm not a retard, I just have virtually zero discipline and I can't focus on improving myself or my studies unless I'm under hermetic conditions.

Wishart matrices are W=XX* where X is overfitted (p>n or even p>>n). Kolmogorov condition is that p/n->(0,infinity).

My thesis will be understanding hers and applying fuckhuge datasets from Intel and see if we can apply MIMO systems with this method. (I.e 4G or 5G systems).

>Is it fun? What's your subject famalam? Topology? Any cool results?
I'm in condensed matter theory, specifically topolgical excitations. I study topological defects and symmetry breaking that leads to phase transitions in semimetals (i.e. anti-/ferromagnetism, superconductivity, etc.) You can see how diff. geo., alg. top. and physics intermingle in cond. mat.
I'm leaning more towards the math side but the lack of funding in math deters me from switching departments.

I so want to read this book.

It looks like a real life version of "Citizen Kane", except with a much less sympathetic protagonist.

From what I've heard, Robert Moses was a powerful ultra-jerk.

His theory book isn't terrible, but Ritzer is basically just a very average sociologist all around. It's mystifying how he's gotten as far as he has.

>>37230917
No. There's literally no point to learning things.
>>
>>37231761

He makes me think of the villain-protagonist from the series "Boss". All-powerful and ruthless.

"Robert Moses (December 18, 1888 – July 29, 1981) was a city planner who worked mainly in the New York metropolitan area. Known as the "master builder" of mid-20th century New York City, Long Island, Rockland County, and Westchester County, he is sometimes compared to Baron Haussmann of Second Empire Paris, and was one of the most polarizing figures in the history of urban planning in the United States. His decisions favoring highways over public transit helped create the modern suburbs of Long Island and influenced a generation of engineers, architects, and urban planners who spread his philosophies across the nation. One of his major contributions to urban planning was New York State's large parkway network.

Robert Moses simultaneously held twelve titles (including NYC Parks Commissioner and Chairman of the Long Island State Park Commission), but was never elected to any public office (he ran only once, for governor of New York as a Republican in 1934 and lost to Herbert H. Lehman). Nevertheless, he created and led numerous public authorities that gave him autonomy from the general public and elected officials. Through these authorities, he controlled millions of dollars in income from his projects, such as tolls, and he could issue bonds to borrow vast sums for new ventures with little or no input from legislative bodies, allowing him to circumvent the power of the purse as it normally functioned in the United States, and the process of public comment on major public works."

There was a /pol/ post against it, but many of the points against it were refuted by people on /his/.

However there is a lot of criticism by actual anthropologists. I'm sure if you check the Wikipedia page there will be a section on criticism. I think the main criticism is that he places too much importance on geography.

What are some topics that interest you?

Sociology is by nature a very broad field, so first you have to narrow down a bit on what grabs your attention.
>>
>>37231994

Also, sociology in the US at least is notorious for letting students get away with doing very little, which is a total disservice to our students. Unfortunately, most instructors are either uninterested in investing more into their students' education, or their hands are tied by higher ups in administration

Anything dealing with criminal justice, international relations, religion, and mental health would snap up my attention immediately as well as practical information about how to appropriately conduct research, but I'm mostly concerned with getting the basic shit I need to know down because I've been neglecting it like a lazy fuck.

>>37232209
Yeah, I would basically skip class a lot, write essays the day before they were due while quickly skimming my books for necessary information, and then get B's and C's.

I was actually disappointed I got away with it, I only real work well under pressure because of my lack of discipline, so I would have actually preferred the bare minimum amount of effort required to pass actually be a monumental undertaking so I would have actual learned.

International Relations: Check out Ulrich Beck and his concept of "risk society," which is about the implications of living in a society increasingly characterized by problems that are international or global in scale (example: global warming, or terrorism). Also check out "world-systems theory" formulated by Wallerstein.

Religion - The Protestant Work Ethic by Weber, and Durkheim's writings on religion are basic starting points for sociology of religion.

Mental Health - Erving Goffman is the go-to psychologically minded sociologist. His book, "Stigma," is totally excellent.

Crime - Alice Goffman, Erving's daughter, just released a book called "On the Run," which is about crime in a philadelphia neighborhood. It's been incredibly controversial in the field, so your professors might be impressed if you know a little something about it.
>>
>>37231708
Economics... is a field of conjecture and sweeping generalisations.
Most of it isnt in any way verifiable
>>
>>37232573
Also, look up the professors in your department and see what they research. Ask them for suggestions because 95/100 times they'll love to give some out.

But don't ask for "mental health" suggestions. Narrow it down by saying something like "I want to know more about how family members deal with psychotic disorders" or "how can i find out about the history of mental health institutions in the US over the last 50 or so years"

Also: If you like crime, Erich Goode has a textbook that gives a good overview of the area. Also check out the book "Moral Panics"

I almost want to just start grilling you for information now, but I'll have some restraint.

Yeah, I read The Elementary Forms of Religious Life back in high school because I wanted to understand the underlying foundations of religion so I could come up with iron-clad cultures for a DnD setting, and that's what started me down this path in the first place.

That, and I was aware it was a broad field and therefore would allow my indecisive ass some wiggle room in potential careers later down the line. Same reason I played Druid in World of Warcraft.

What do you do for a living?
>>
>>37232905
Right now I'm a lowly grad student at a pretty good PhD program in sociology, currently trying to decide between the academic route or going into government/think tank/non-profit/etc. type work.

Never really got why people are so concerned with the IQ of people in the country they live

I would rather have an IQ of 105 and live among people with an average of 95, than have a 100 and live in a country with an average of 103

The dumber the rest of society gets, the easier it is for me to succeed. The uglier and fatter society gets, the better looking I am in comparison

>8 years of military as a Civil Affairs Liaison
>Easy street/grace period where I can do what I want
>Embassy work

Alright, let me think of more things I want to know about, the problem here isn't your knowledge of the field but mine.

I read Outliers a few months ago, do you know of anything would explain in more detail how the mechanics of achieving success work? Maybe not in the same vein of "The situation you came from and the parameters you're working within fucking matter" as Outliers talked about it, but more of how being "successful" is defined and encouraged by society at large.

Hmm. Dan Pink has a book out that kind of sums up some recent research on what motivates a person to achieve certain types of task, which can be applied to career or life goals.

There is C. Wright Mills' classic book "White Collar" which discusses the idea of a white collar worker, many of whom would be considered "successful," why it was created, and some of the problems that arise out of the orientation of white-collar work.

"The Time Bind" might also be of interest. It discusses the changing importance of work and home life in providing a person with feelings of "worth."

Do any of these hit the mark, or too off base?

>read to learn
Which brings me to my second point about the books in these threads. So you know what Plato thought about stuff. Then what? Learning for the sake of learning without considering its application is retarded. Read about stuff that will help you gain in other areas that are important to you. Unless "appearing to be smart because I've read stuff" is important to you then go ahead.

Actually, Aboriginals did domesticate animals and farm, but with Australia's geography and low amount of food per hectare their farms were enormous, many kilometers of bush was systematically burned in millennia old patterns.

Aboriginal farms are nothing like farms of any other culture, they were more part of the ecosystem than any other race of people have ever been. the mobs of kangaroos were herded, the bush was burned regularly to get the plants they wanted to grow to grow, don't compare aboriginals to Africans.

I can't stop having the impression that people a hundred years ago were much more educated and literate than we are. I'm the one reading the kojiki translation from the late XIX century, and in the preface the translator states that it's meant to be used as a guide for students reading it in the original archaic japanese/chinese mix. He then proceeds to list like twenty (not exagerating) differing versions of the original, list five or so of them as essential reads (all in chinese or japanese of course) and detailed explainations of the differences and corrections in each one. I wonder what kind of superhuman that supposed student is.
