alright /swim/ I've been at it for about 6 months and I can do 10 consecutive freestyle laps, but I'm struggling to not be exhausted by the end. My goal is a mile. I'm pretty sure my form is the problem. I don't have access to a good coach so I need some videos to learn from. When I started someone said to just emulate this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJpFVvho0o4

TLDR; Is total immersion the way to go for long distance? What's the best set of instructional videos/materials, I'm happy to spend up to $100 for 'em since that's what I'd spend on a coach.

>bumping with cute swim girls since that's the best part of these threads anyway.

how do I get into open water swimming?
>>
>>37144469
first of all get some clean open water. that should be hard enough to keep you busy for some time
>>
>>37144469
>>37144492
Same question i want to start into swimming and have plenty of calm sea water, what routine would you recomend?

6'2'' 170 lbs been lifting for 8 months if that matters.
>>
>>37144810
Can you swim in a pool well? Step 2 is finding a buddy who's already confident in open water/can save your ass if need be.
>>
>>37144367
keep a very close watch on your technique and your breathing , if you want to do a mile without tiring out your best bet would be in a constant pace , breathing in every 4th stroke and letting out the air in the third one .
on a side note , try to make your kick as straight as you can , like a ballerina
>>
>>37145213
Yes i've lived near the sea my whole life i just want to do it more serious.
I lift M/W/F running SS (inb4 meme). Should i swim only in rest days?

What is the calories burned multiplier if i swim only with fins?

Like let's say an hour of breaststroke will burn 500kcals, how many kcals will it burn if swam with fins?
>>
>>37146316
well it seems fins make you swim more efficiently, so you'd probably burn less calories?
I have no idea though

It makes you exert more effort, so it should make you burn more calories logically
>>
What shirt should I wear for swimming? Flabby loose skin shame.

yes but not over the same distance. Fins make small distances like 25 yards/meters trivial.

Thanks OP for the bin. Was looking for something like it, since I'm just trying to make it a regular thing to go swimming 3 times a week with a friend.
It's more of a relaxation thing, than excercise, but we're kind of doing both, for the sake of health and fun. I suck at breathing during freestyle. The vids helped a bit, I won't know til next time, any of you had issues regarding freestyle breathing? How did you overcome it? Will my shape develop alright, if I'm only doing swimming? I'm asking merely 'cause my belly ain't getting any work done while swimming. Am I doing something wrong?

I love swimming and I love being in the water. But lets be honest; I only go to the pool at the gym to see the /fit/ girls in swimsuit

I am planning on making swimming part of my routine - been exercising for about 3-4 years but have taken lifting to the next level about 6 months ago.

5'9 about 155. 3-4 days of lifting with 1-2 days of cardio

Is it worth it to take a swim class if I am planning on swimming in the ocean 1-2 days a week?

Anyone able to tell me what a beginner's swim class will teach me?
>>
>>37149315
Yes, taking a class is totaly worthy. You need to get your technique on point before trying to git gud.

A beginner class can differ from whatever place you choose to go and the age of the person learning. For example for kids the first few classes would be about losing fear of water and getting comfortable with it. If you're already grown up its going to be way different.

In my case I learned to swim when I was 19 (24 now), I knew absolutely nothing so my first class was about getting comfortable with the horizontal position that your body will be when swimming.. mainly we did some drills with the kickboard and pull buoy, how to kick and how the rythm of the strokes works.

Anyone have shoulder problems with extended periods of side strokes?

Long story short, I'm basically paralyzed in my left arm, so I don't get to switch off. Used to front crawl but I've been focusing on form with the combat side stroke. I'm just concerned about long term effects. Any help?

OP here; it really depends on the instructor. I went from feeling like I was dying after 14 25's with 4 minute long breaks in between to swimming 14 50's no problem over night when I started. It was all because of one lesson from a friend who previously competition-level (good story actually, I'll tell it in the next post).

I spent the next six months getting slowly better trying to emulate the video in this:
>>37144367
and I worked up to doing 500m.

I hit a plateau at 500m and so I bought lessons. In the first lesson the instructor helped me with 2-3 form things that were OBVIOUSLY wrong. Then after that, every lesson was "just keep practicing more you'll get better". Unhelpful bullshit. The only drills he gave me were basic ones I was already doing.

So I recommend finding someone who has won some competitions and convincing them to give you a lesson once in a while, with long periods of watching speedo/TI instructional videos in-between so you build some endurance and get the most out of each new lesson.

>>37149060
pretty sure it doesn't matter.

>>37149094
get in pool, put arms ahead of you like you're superman, relax head, and kick your way across the pool. Think of your leg like a really stiff whip, like a riding crop.

>>37149160
no problem man, I'm glad I saved it awhile back. Kudos to the anon that made it.

It's all old people where I go, except once in a while and then it's sooooo fucking hard not to let everyone know I'm mirin' her. Worried I'll get booted from the gym.

I'm watching these vids right now:

>>37144367
The guy on you video is already very experienced. There are short distance and long distance competitions and the technique used on either of them is a bit different from each other. 25m, 50m, 100m can be considered short distance so usually you aim to go sanic fast, the kick and strokes are more explosive and most swimmers breath every two or three strokes.
Then 200m and 400m are somewhere between short & long distance, after that it comes 800m, 1200m(wich is close to a mile), 1500m and so on, this are the long distance competitions. On long distance you should aim to go fast but your arms have to be relaxed and its a bit different. These are heavyly focused on good technique so you can swim longer on every stroke without getting tired that fast. I tend to make the strokes a bit longer and breath either every two or every four strokes like on this videos.

okay so story time about my first lesson (since middle school at least, I'm 26 now).

So I'd been trying to get into swimming for a couple weeks and struggling with even doing a full 50 free. There's a bunch of usuals I see at the pool when I go who make me feel like shit because they look so pro swimming so many laps without stopping.

anyway, I find myself at a house party drunk as fuck talking to this girl and it comes up that I'm trying to get into swimming.

Her: "Oh no shit, I used to compete in swimming a lot, I was all-state."

Me: "Yeah I'm struggling though. I know it's all about form and I'm just working too hard to get across the pool."

Note, she's not in BAD shape, but she's got beer fat on her and I see her multiple times a week at house parties. She's currently on her 5th beer (typical amount this friend group drinks is ~6 pack a person a night) and smoking a cigarette.

Her: "Yeah it really is all about form. I mean, not to be too cocky, even though I haven't swam in years and I've taken up smoking, if I went back to the pool tomorrow I would probably blow everyone's time out of the fucking water just because I know good form and they probably don't."

So I'm like 'okay sure' and decide to call her on what I'm betting is some serious bullshit.

Me: "oh that's awesome! Would you be willing to meet me at the pool thursday at 7 and give me some pointers?"

Her: "yeah for sure!"
>>
>>37145258
Better to breath every 3rd stroke. Makes for a more consistent form and it's easier to maintain over longer distance.

cont

So we're on the pool deck and the usuals are there swimming back and forth like pros (to me at least).

Me: "okay so could we start with you doing a 300 so I can watch your form and flip turns for a bit to know what you're talking about?"

Her: "Yeah that's a good way to start."

She gets in the pool and I'm all like 'okay moment of truth'.

Sure enough she fucking ROCKETS across the water. I'm talking like 1.5-2 times as fast as the other swimmers. When she's done she's not really even out of breath.

Me: "holy fuck you were right, you're way better than everyone else here."

Her: "yeah like I said, effort and being in shape doesn't matter for shit if your form isn't good."

So moral of the story: Find someone with really good form and get them to teach you. Unfortunately she moved to cambodia or some shit shortly thereafter so I didn't get to take more lessons.

Unless you are using the fins to swim faster then you will be burning less calories. If you use fins to exert less energy to swim at your normal pace then you are not going to burn more cals.

Also, don't do breastroke with fins on, it's terrible for your knees

nah I'm really bad at sex and the strings/obligations/emotions surrounding it always take a lot of time I can spend on other, more enjoyable and useful things. Also, most of my time dating I find that I end up not really enjoying myself with the girl, which after a number of girls is probably my problem, not theirs.

So I generally avoid it unless I can do it without too many strings, which is impossible with a girl in the friend group. I'm lonely, but I figure I've made it this long just jacking off alone, it's not gonna kill me to continue being alone. I just do me and nothing else and if that leads me to someone I want to spend my life with then fuck yeah, if not, I'll be glad I did me and didn't waste time chasing girls I'd end up unhappy with anyway.

TLDR; Nah, I'm an autist and I like it that way.

I'm not sure if this is a dumb question, but currently I'm bulking and making good gains (skelly) but gaining a LOT of belly fat around my lower stomach. I want it to be because outside of lifting for an hour or so 3 days a week, I am very sedentary and sit and home a lot

I want to incorporate swimming in 3 of my "rest" days. Do you guys think it will help me lose body fat? I'm going to maintain 3k even with cardio so obviously I won't gain mass as quickly but I can't fucking deal with this stomach bulge coming from having a flat stomach all my life

I was on a swim team this past year of high school, and I'm pretty sure I came in last in every race I ever competed in. I was just glad for the exercise I guess. I improved quite a bit from where I started but that's not saying much.

I managed to do a 9:30 500m, which is what I needed for my lifeguarding job, so I'm happy.

Im not denying that USA got some solid swimmers like Lochte, Missy Franklin, Phelps and more but you know what im talking about, just go and read the coments on any swimming video on youtube. Most of them will say something like "Im 16 now, from Texas and can do 50free in 21 secs", "Im a grill and my best time in 100fly is 53 seconds :3" and all that is because they do those time in a hack-tier yards pools.
