The supposed link is that by lifting and seeing results, especially if you come from being a skelly or fatty, you see the power hard work has to change your life. It makes you feel like the same power exists when it comes to changing your socioeconomic status, which it does, to a degree, though there are more variables at play there and many which you understand less than you understand the mostly closed system of your body.

Simply existing as a straight white man in the year 2016 is seen as a hate crime in America. I'm not /pol/ and that is my point. I have the same moderate-liberal beliefs I've always had. Sane beliefs like better protection of the environment. I could probably be best described as a green-libertarian.
I can no longer really call myself a liberal because the people who meet the current definition of liberal have gone insane. And I do mean insane. Even Alan Dershowitz is speaking out on it at this point.

Ideally I'd be a libertarian, but I'm pragmatic at the moment and realise that one cannot realistically win.
I started off conservative, got into highschool and became an edgy liberal. After that I went to a University and met a lot of people from a lot of different backgrounds. I slept 4 hours a day (at most) and spent the rest of my time either socializing, reading, or engaging with professors from economics, business, or philosophy.
The end result was me becoming much more conservative.
Society is a reflection of its people.

Back in highschool before I started lifting I was a super liberal
When I dropped out of college after first semester and started lifting and working two full time jobs I started leaning more and more to the right.
Now I have tons of money saved up, I'm super healthy, just paid off my first new car, and am hoping to open up my own business within the next 2 to 3 years at 20 years old. My old friends from highschool all burned out in their second year of their liberal arts education and are Lazy skelly/obese social media activists with dead end minimum wage jobs who constantly try to leech off of others.
I don't like the idea of my hard work and dedication helping those who are too lazy to work for it themselves.
Most of my friends are liberal and I've never understood the liberals are lazy meme

I'm still center-left for the most part. I just hate liberals more and more. I fully support helping poor people go to school, get medical care, and even help them find jobs. I have no problem with my taxes going to causes like that especially if people are actually trying to better themselves. I have no problem with Mexicans coming over, as long as they fucking come here legally documented. I don't mind giving the low end working class negative income tax and food stamps. In reality what people really hate are progressives, not necessarily liberals. It certainly doesn't help liberals' case that most progressives also believe themselves to be liberal, but there are significant differences.
What you'll find for the most part that liberals generally believe in a few key points: government provision of healthcare, action on climate change, proportionally higher taxation for the wealthy, freedom to marry/abort/whatever, and a few others.
As for progressives, these are usually the ones who think you should make racism illegal, all minorities are innocent or in fact victims, HAES, everyone is sexist, etc. In my opinion, as someone who hates this shit and as someone who typically believes myself to be liberal, it's very different. Most of the liberals I know also think these people are a plague and wouldn't shed a tear if they got nuked.
A good example of this is on The Guardian's comment section. Most of the people who will be debating something like climate change are going to be in favor of acting on it, and they're also the same people who will be calling the progressive hack jobs writing stuff like "men look at me and I'm oppressed" out for being retarded.
As an aside, some of the most racist people I've ever met out here in California aren't Trump supporters - they're Bernie supporters
