you know your running isn't really doing shit for your weight loss, right? it's just a few hundred calories per workout, roughly equivalent to a small snack. you should lift instead, it provides more benefits.

why do people get so butthurt on this board when people bring up cardio?

>NOOOO CARDIO IT KILLS MAH GAINS AND GIVES U SHIN SPLINTZ!!!

i've been running everyday after lifting for the past 3 months (3+ miles a day, 100+ miles a month). boxers run way more than this and are fine.

cardio is the best thing to ever happen to me. it's honestly like therapy and relaxes my mind completely and helps me focus on improving my life. ever since i've started doing cardio my focus on self-improvement has sky rocketed. 3.9 gpa, been sending out resumes like crazy, got an internship lined up for the summer, social gains off the wall, gains are coming in better than ever.

you retards need to stop thinking cardio is used just as a "gains goblin" and embrace the mental gains you can gain from it.

OP said cardio, retard, i.e. Swimming, cycling, sprinting. Not long distance marathon running, which is virtually the only way these problems can arise (provided that you aren't 100 pounds overweight).

Doing some cardio at least 3 times a week now, used to not. Green text!

>Work schedule changes, going into gym pre-work instead of post work

>Leaving soon, she says to me "If you can catch me you can have me." and starts running
>I start chasing after her, it feels like she is toying with me, everytime I get close she speeds up
>Soon I am out of breathe, she comes walking back, clearly not out of breathe with a big shit eating grin
>Tells me she does sprints and long distance running
>We head home
>Next time in the gym, I show up early so I have time to do cardio after my workout, she sees me doing cardio

How do you train explosivity (don't know if it's the right term).

I can run long distances but I played a football game last week and fuck, after 10 minutes, my chest hurted like hell.

I need some cardio exercice that'll help get trough intense activity during a few minutes.

>>37077844
I probably will. Also, I want to change my long run pace. Normally I've run at a 7:30 pace for long runs but some friends of mine suggested dropping it down to 6:50-7:00. That way when you build to high mileage, you're used to the quicker pace
>>
>>37071187
You have chronic exertion all compartment syndrome like me, surprised it wasn't picked up with an MRI. I will be having surgery on it at some point you may need the same otherwise stretch, foam roll, and RICE if you still want to do cardio.

No idea why someone would just give this shit away but fuck it. Did I do good? Trying to figure out how to train for checking for those quad gainz and weight loss. Any good guides for getting good at these things?

Pic related, exact one I got.
>>
>>37071114
Do you stretch or anything ? If they are hard as rocks etc try foam rolling and sports massage, also you could be wearing not necessarily the wrong footwear but may be not supportive for your specific gait. Also take calcium supplements and other things to strengthen/encourage bone growth and repair because it sounds like you may have stress fractures which happen to newbie runners as their bones can't cope quick enough to handle the stress and weight placed upon them. Jus sayin it could be pretty treatable.
>>
>>37077538
Could be caused by over intense running when your body isn't prepared. Also if your leg strength isn't good enough to take the stress of running, because shin splints happen when micro tears occur in the muscle and bone.
>>

Did you niggers know that increased heart rate from lifting is not the same as increased heart rate from cardio?

First is a response to resistance and it causes your heart to go up to increase blood pressure which makes the heart walls grow thicker. It also doesn't do nearly as much in terms of calories burn.

Cardio adaptation occur because there is a need for volume, therefore heart adapts to pump more blood (as opposed to very fast increase in bp) for long periods. Heart becomes bigger and pumps with less effort

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2300466/

Have a read. It involves studies on hearts of lifters and endurance athletes and which is more favorable

so i watched the elliptical vid you linked, man those are intense workouts. 30 minutes seems like a really long HIIT session and way more than "just a few minutes" Nice lifts btw
>>
>>37078819
Thanks man! The elliptical workout is broken down into 4 sets with each lasting around 5-6 minutes. He recommends beginners only do the first one or two sets so that's about 10-12 minutes. Not bad if you ask me.

Do you run in the mornings?
I started running but couldn't fit it in my routine without making it a chore so I do other forms of more HIIT cardio.
I'm thinking that if I start running in the mornings it may increase the energy I have for actually doing stuff in the day. I don't know.
>>
>>37078963
a nice 40 min cardio session first thing is invigorating for me. dat runner's high
>>
what does /fit/ cardio bunnies think of the Nike Zoom elite shoe? are they comfy?
>>
>>37077895
Don't do that yet. Listen to that guy first, include some tempo, intervals, hills, threshold, once or twice a week. Your long run pace will improve with time, meaning your legs are ready.
>>
>>37079410
My goal is to peak in late October or early November so I'm building a base right now. I'm aiming to peak out in mileage in late August and then begin serious workouts, probably 2-3 times a week for 2 months. This type of training has worked for me in the past and has helped me run a 16:30 5k
>>
>>37079595
*going to start building a base soon
>>
>>37079410

seconding this - assuming you mean like 12+ miles for long runs, doing them at a HR of anything over ~140 will be very taxing on your body. We had sub-25 guys on my team (D3) doing long runs at 7:15-7:30 pace still. You can start pushing the pace on your base runs (e.g. normal runs) earlier, but there isn't a lot of benefit to running long runs faster and it takes you longer to recover.
>>
>>37071114
wow, good explanation. This is exactly describes mine a couple years ago. But, you know what anon? I think I ran through mine, desu.

Ya, i'd run until the inflammation started and then only go for another 5-10 minutes. I would wait a week then try it again, and made sure to be really hydrated all the time too. Eventually I lost some weight, gained some muscle and ran through the shin splints..I do not get the 'rock shin' like I used to.
>>
>>37077964
Put the resistance up high and do non-sitting pedaling for a minutes, watch sweat pour. Then lower resistance and cycle for 5min. Literally do this HIIT like 20 minutes session will work you over nicely and not too boring or too long.

Is there a such thing as cardiovascular deload?

>run and get 2 mile time to 15 1/2 min
On treadmill
> start struggle really bad
>drop length
>switch to pavement
>increase time
>take breaks
> stop one day
>resume next planned time
>run is back to normal and better and so are RDL
>>
>>37077894
HIIT sprints on a treadmill.

Also start running outside and do some up Hill sprints.
>>
I do weight training cuz I hate being so skinny, but cardio is all that really matters. In my field of work, cardio benefits me, strength does not. I also go kayaking and mtn biking a few times a year, so cardio wins there too.

That said, my quads are killing me after bumping up my deadlift by 10 more pounds.
>>
>>37080457
>quad doms
>after deadlift
Youre doing it wrong
>>
I'm type one diabetic and doing cardio wreaks havoc on my blood sugar. I can't even do a steady powerwalk without my sugar plummeting. And I'm trying to lose weight, so if I eat/drink something before cardio, it kind of defeats the purpose.

So I lift. That doesn't drop me nearly as fast, so it's cool.

>would smile at her, would wave and greet her, and eventually talked to her
Fugg, I can't even make eye contact with girls anymore and I forgot how to fake a smile. Most people probably think that I hate everyone and feel superior.
Congrats
>>
>>37077993
I'd say double it. 1.5 cant take more than a few minutes and you should at least be doing 20 mins of cardio.
>>
I'm 22 and I never learned how to ride a bike or swim
Is it too late?
>>
>>37071270

Haven't you noticed?

He's running for the girl, of course he's running like a retard
>>
>>37082297
nah, riding a bike's piss easy, you've just got to believe
>>
My best 5K was at 24:16, and I'm really happy about that, since I'm a pretty tubby dude.
I'm just really uncertain about where I wanna go with my cardio - If I want to run longer distances, go faster on shorter distances, that kind of stuff.

>>37071146
Bro, be mindful of trail running - I was running on a trail a couple months back, and this woman in front of me told me she'd call the cops on me.
>>
>>37072365
Football is a dangerous sport which can lead to injuries
Due to the injuries you wont be able to workout.

Cardio isnt bad, football is
>>
meh i ran daily for 8 years, started lifting, ran for about a year alongside but recently quit

i should really get back into it for cardiovascular benefits but lifting is 100% more beneficial for my mood and ego

Thats a bit of cardio. You have what I would call, basic endurance.

Good for you
>>
>>37070924
Pretty good. Been running about 9.3 miles a week.
>>
I started running again now that the winter is through. Fuck, I used to be decent, best 5k was 19:00 flat and a 1:33:00 half marathon. now I'm trudging at like 25:00 5k and I couldn't be any more disappointed. Still I put on like twenty pounds since then, mostly lean thank christ. sitting just under 200, this adderall I'm taking tonight is definitely going to help slash that. Better not lose my lean though, i've been drinking shit loads of milk and the like.
>>
>>37075364
It is not. Get over your self retard
>>
How do some people actuslly run like 10km casually? I don't understand how that's possible. I run frequently and sprints especially and uphill running, but there's no way I could run 10km at steady space. I can't come up with anything worse.
>>
>>37071826
I think it's either just memes, or they want to justify their laziness because cardio is hard for them (it's possibly the hardest fitness-related thing for anyone starting out) and they want to feel less bad about skipping it.
>>
>>37071246
personally, I beg to differ, mine are nice af
>>
>>37071105
You build no quantifiable aerobic or anaerobic capacity from short bursts of lifting. Yeah it'll get your heart rate up, and burn fat, but that's about it.
>>
>>37070924
Side bar, has no one noticed these assholes in the pic are running in the fucking desert without carrying water bottles, and fuckweed chasing the tail is wearing a near black shirt. In the middle of the road. Not to mention this girl is smiling when she should be looking like she's about to push a magickarp out of her growler. So many things wrong here.
>>
>>37070924
Pretty good since im a skelly. Im jogging because im interested in jogging. I managed to push myself to 1 hour plus for the last 4 times, and my record so far is 2h 30m (with a 5 minute break)

Problem is, my form is probably shit. Are my calves/quads/glutes supposed to be the main activated muscle groups? My quads/glutes feel like they did zero work, and my calves feel barely worked even after a 6 km/h pace for one hour. I feel it all in my foot and on the muscle(s) on my shin.

Am i running incorrectly? A lot of it is on shitty bumpy pavement/road/dirt.
>>
>>37077283
wear good shoes and make sure you aren't landing flat footed. Your footstrike should be the balls of your feet, that then goes to heel and back. get plenty of calcium
>>
>>37083122
>6 km/h pace for one hour.

nigga that's not running that's walking
>>
>>37083163

Congrats on reading this far.

By now you have decided to start running yes?

Good for you!

But

Remember to breathe deeply while running to avoid cramps..

I inhale while take two steps and then exhale taking two steps, sometimes three steps! Find YOUR rhythm, This is crucial to your success!!!

Also the lighter you are the faster and longer you can run! So leave heavy items at home, ideally you just want your key in a zipped up pocket.

Leave your hands empty (no mobiles)

When you run, run tall and proud, chin up.

Run outdoors. Run relaxed

Thats about it..

Im going for a run. Cya!
>>
>>37077643
You need to increase your distance. Also 1.5 m as a warming up is to far. Try half a mile for warming up.
>>
>>37071114
You did it wrong. Hiit sprints, not some jogging for miles bullshit, is the way to go.
>>
>>37078135
So are there any advantages to thicker heart walls?
>>
>>37083038
Once you're in shape the first mile or two will always be the worst, so you're just doing the hardest part by sticking with short distances. Some people warm up for a 5k race by running a 5k.
>>
Just ran a tough mudder in Ohio yesterday. 10 miles of hills and mud with some of the most fun obstacles.

I did it, but I need to run outside on hills more and on the treadmill less. Seriously.
>>
Went for a run last night. Entire car full of girls fucking wolf whistled me and grinning as they past by. I don't know if they were genuine or not, as I haven't been /fit/ for a relatively long time ( a year and a half)

Whatever the case, it was flattering. Why women cry misogamy about it is beyond m comprehension.

I got shin splits and want to put the least amount of pressure on my shins.

Where should my foot land? Everyone says landing on the front of the foot puts the least amount of pressure on the shins, but when I run it feels x100 better to land on the heel for my shins.
>>
>>37083526
Fuck me, after 2 miles I'm exhausted. Averaged out at 7:30 minutes a mile when I did it which isn't great either. Should I start going for 5k then?
