who /migraine/ here? how long have you been dealing with it? what does a typical attack look like to you? has anything helped you with it? does your migraine hinder your lifting in any way?

I just recovered from an attack, got migraines since early childhood, now at 24 yo. shit sucks man.

I get them about once every 3-4months. Luckily, they aren't severe. I get the loss of vision part, and I know what's coming. Headache is sharp and in the front right side of my brain, but it's not enough to stop me from sleeping. Usually I just sleep them off once I feel one coming.

how do you deal with them at work or when you're out?
>>

I just try to survive really. I luckily have only had one while I was out, and I just waited out the vision loss. If I am with someone or need to do something, I let the person know what's happening and usually they're quite understanding. Once the vision loss is gone, I simply exist until I can find a time to rest. Usually a fast nap gets rid of them, even closing my eyes and just laying my head down for like 20-30min has helped a lot.

I'm the same. My friends, family and work know I get them and that I'm basically non functional while I have them so once I know it's happening I just excuse myself and go home

sounds a lot like my attacks. I used to get a lot of symptomes at once when I was a child. loss of vision, having trouble speaking, not feeling my arms and my face etc. nowadays my body seems to go through them in waves, usually one thing will stop and another symptom will emerge. I hope this gets better over time.

Usually right before an episode I feel kinda.. weird? It's kind of what you said about not feel arms, like I feel like I can control them but they aren't apart of me if that makes sense.

Then, I know the vision comes next. My vision will start slowly fading (and holy shit this was the most terrifying part the first time I had one), then it will get so bad that I literally can't see anything. It's like the blind spot in my eyes just slowly take over my whole eye.

Then, once my vision is completely gone, it will all come back within like 2min, but then the headache comes.

how often do you get them? are the headaches severe? I'm so, so lucky my headaches aren't as bad as people say. It sounds so awful.

I know exactly what you mean. You know you control them, and you see what they do but none of your actions feel like they make sense. it feels like they don't belong to you, like somehow, something is wrong.

yuuppp dead on anon, dead on. I get anxiety attacks sometimes and they can feel the same way, except I'm also freaking the fuck out so it's worse. how often do you get your migraines?

I get about 3 or 4 in a year, but used to have them a lot more. I had about every months as a child and had to be hospitalized everytime I had one as a teenager because all those symptoms would come at once and people around me freaked the fuck out. went through months of stationary therapy to at least slow them down a bit.

i feel your pain sir. Perversely I get them from lifting (squats and pull-ups primarily)

it starts out as a headache, and then it just doesn't go away, eventually leading to nausea and vomiting -- kind of like an immaculate hangover.

then for about 5 hours afterwards I'm just dead tired :(

relpax helps, but it's rx only .. aside from that, yeah you're fucked. =/

I'm so sorry anon.

i feel the need to add my dead end story. i have headaches on a daily basis. usually like 4-6/10 pain wise. but every few days i have a major migrane. i think its conected to the migraines but im not sure, i hallucinate a lot. its not schizophrenic in nature, but more like im being haunted (random people appearing and disappearing. random nonsensical voices). ive seen every specialist that would be nessicarry but with no real resolution. its now an unspecified headache disorder and psychosis. all i can do for headaches it OTC excedrine migranes which is okay, not great. for thhe psychosis, im taking seroquel XR. which has side effects of depression and weight gain. so i lurk /fit/ and try to control both through physical fitness. it helps the headaches to a point and controls the seroquel side effects to a point.

I've had occular migraines since I was 16, 22 now. Having gotten them maybe 0-2 times a month in this duration there are a few things I have learned:
1) The head ache you get pre-migraine is different from every other head-ache you'll ever get. Learn to recognize that droning pain so that you can plan in advance what to do. If you're driving pull over, if at work see if you can take a break, if you're in class then leave, etc.

2) No medication will get rid of it, at least in my experience. You can only mask the pain with pain relievers. Even with the pain gone, I've found that the nausea persists, as well as the flashes

3) Meditation is the best solution. Sitting in a dark and absolutely quiet environment and focusing on a singular thought has helped me through more meltdowns than I can count and helps with the nausea

I vividly remember the first migraine I had when I was 16, just chilling in bed, literally thought I was gonna die, my mom thought I was having an aneurysm lol. Shit sucks but you get used to it I guess.

I used to get them a lot when I was younger.
Now I'm 24 and I almost never get them. I had one a month ago and then before that I hadn't had one in two years, before that hadn't had one in a year.

I don't smoke, drink caffeine, or eat MSG. I think that's part of it.

I've also found that since I started working out, the migraines aren't quite as bad.

I first started getting migraines around the age of 14, I got them ~every two weeks and I had crippling pain + vision loss + vomiting. The worst part is, any medication I took I just vomited up, so I eventually just gave up on taking anything and just rode it out for a couple of hours.
I used to go see a chiropractor a lot because I have always had shitty back problems, so he helped a lot with advising me on posture changes. when i was a school kid i always had a fucking heavy backpack and slouched all the time so my back was in a really bad state. once I got around 18/19yo the migraines stopped and I just started getting a short 1-2 mins of vision loss, every couple of months, but no head pain or vomiting. just a wierd flashy thing in one eye that disappeared instantly after. I asked my doctor about it and he said that I have what is called "migraine without headache" so it's possible that this becomes less of an issue in the future. I think mine were a mix of hormonal issues and tightness in the neck. I have a lot less muscle pain these days and it seems to have coincided with the migraines becoming pain-free. I had my first migraine in 4 years 6 months ago, but thats it.
