is cycling a better alternative to running? what are the pros/cons of cycling over running?

I used to ride fixed gear/ track bikes, if you take it seriously and be consistent you will have god quads like pic related (pro track cyclist legs)

If I wanted to start biking again, how would I work it into my routine as a bodybuilder so as to not hurt my overall gains?
>>
none of you faggots ride bikes
>>
>>37057559

Those quads are as much to do with their gym work as their cycling.
>>
>>37057559
+ Cycling is better for the knee joints.
+ Less sport injuries
+ More enjoyable (atleast to me)
- I think running might be a better all body workout (ofcourse track cyclists use their whole body more).
- Cycling more expensive
- Cycling takes more time
- Cycling more prone to accident

And the guy in pic is Robert Forstermann, he lifts weights alot.
>>
>>37058341
so when and how do i incorporate it in to my weekly routine? thanks bro
>>
>>37058508
You could use a bike to commute
>>
>>37057559
>no impact on joints
>easy
>can watch TV
>almost no effort comparitively

>impact on joints isn't bad and increases bone density
>easy so it takes about 3x more effort to burn the same amount of calories as running
>much less aerobic gain unless you can pedal for your life consistently

Do both running and cycling, since cycling targets the glutes pretty well. A good idea is to Run then Cycle after as your cooldown.
>>
>>37057559
Pick cycling if you aren't a fan of arthritis and knee surgery.
>>
>>37057559
if you start riding a bike with the locking cleats that hasn't been properly fitted to your body you will have joint issues. none of these fags ride or they wouldn't keep saying better for your joints. google cycle knee pain. at 90-100 rpm that joint gets a hell of a workout. in a 30 minute bike one knee bends 2700 times.
>>
>>37059361
No "impact" on joints compared to running. Yes the joint gets used faggot. It just isn't pounding along on the road/mill
>>
i ride a shitload, 10-14 hours a week of structured training.
If you're into it cuz its fun or you compete, its awesome.
if you wanna lose body fat, run.
>>
>>37057559
>if you take it seriously and be consistent you will have god quads like pic related

You do know that track cyclists squat heavy and use anabolic steroids, right?
>>
>>37057559

People who ride bikes 90% of the time are assholes who think they dont have to follow the rules of the road. Also when a huge group of bikers ride on my road and take up both lanes I get super pissed.

>>
>>37066479
>thinking geology>engineering
are you even trying?
>>
>>37066587
In all seriousness m8 I've had owners of environmental consulting firms and the like tell me that they were looking for geologists more than actual engineers.
I'm not memeing and I'm not sure why they would prefer them, but the people I've met had degrees in science as opposed to engineering so that might have something to do with it.
>>
>>37066721
Also serious now. My branch of engineering is really towards science and ecology, I don´t get an B.Eng/M.Eng but B.Sc/M.Sc. My field is very wide and I´m gonna be a hybrid between an engineer and a scientist. it´s really interesting and I´m researching about civil engineering and resource management in vietnam right now. Part of it is to look for their natural resources, so it is a bit of geology because they have problems with mining too much to the point where they destroy their nature. i hope i can help them with that. no hate here, i see you as a colleague
>>
>>37057559
Swimming is better than both if you have access. Squats will give you the quads you want if done correctly.
>>
>>37066844
Oh yeah I wasn't hating or anything, I've just been to a few talks and I really don't understand why those particular owners/employees kind of snubbed the engineers, but like I said I think it's because most of those people were doctors in geology or some environmental science.
And yeah that stuff kicks ass. I'm a geo/chem double major so the idea of being able to understand the geology of an area chemically is really interesting since it would help prevent/re-mediate shit like mining fucking up an entire area.

>>

why would i have to watch a tv set when i´m on my bike? just today i chased two moms in a car with their little kids in the backseat watching some cartoon on the headrest monitors. i had way too much fun racing them in the inner city traffic to have time to see what they were watching
>>
Mountain bikers are objectively cooler, better looking and more alpha
>>
I cycle all the time. Currently I am training for my 1st century and it will have around 3600' of climbing in a single go. Hills are where its at if you want intensity, and its also something I am kind of bad at. You might climb for hour or 2 and then fly down the mountain in 30 minutes hitting 45-50 mph. That right there is a blast. I actually stopped squatting and deadlifting just so I wouldnt injure myself and lose time on the bike
>>
>>37067290
>century
can you explain what that means, please? good luck, tho!
>>
>>37067541
100 miles, or basically for me its going to be like 7-8 hours of riding in one go. I am hoping to hold around 16-17 mph for an average which isnt really that fast. I pretty much hold close to 20mph for my 20 miles after work everyday but need to slo don for the long haul. When I climb the hills I will be lucky to hold 10 mph through that section and it ill really slow me down.

nobody said how to work cycling into a bodybuiling type routine though. I wanna make gains but I also dont wanna loose them cause of the cardio meme
>>
>>37070013

Cyclists (especially sprint cyclists, who are really the only huge cyclists) don't have super huge legs because they're cyclists, they have them because they're squat maniacs in the gym thanks to how much it helps their cycling.

You want big quads? Mimic their gym work more than their sport work.

buying this nashbar when I get back from deployment for leisure riding and local bike trails. Anyone have one? I know I could probably find a good deal on craigslist for a used road bike, but honestly I don't know much about bike parts/brands and would kind of prefer having a solid new starter bike that I could add to.

I'm not competing with it or anything.. just something to cruise around on and get a workout besides swimming and running.
>>
>>37070028
I definitely will be hitting squats for the fast gains but I'm asking: is it ok to run/cycle while weight lifting for a body building physique? how and when should i do it and for how long? I dont wanna look like a fucking string bean cyclist but I want to be able to still enjoy it while making my gains in the gym.

You're going to want a different frame that would naturally have more of your weight on the handlebars and peddles. That one you have in your pic would put most of your weight on your tail end which would be very uncomfortable in the long run as well as cause ED. You know those cops that sue their department because they have erectile dysfunction after a few years as a bike cop? It's because they ride bikes like that.

Also, don't buy into the stupid $5000 bike myths that will tempt you. The honest truth is that there's not much difference between a $1000 bike and a $5000 bike and aluminum is just peachy.

Riding on asphalt. We have a 30 mile asphalt bike trail through a state park. I'd also use it it for commuting to run errands/ride to the gym etc.

>>37070582
Price range?

I'd say it's probably best to always go the craigslist route first to see if anything fits your fancy but going to a local bike shop and having them fit you with the right frame would be ideal for beginners. They even throw in a seat fitting too but most of the time you'll have to look around for a seat that will work.

If you're confident on the size frame you'll need and just want to buy from the internet then this is a pretty good starter:

>>
>>37070641
Hm, looks like i'll have to go the craigslist route. I see a lot on there for $200-400 which is more my price range.
>>
You fags STILL havent answered my original question in the op: >>37070135
>>
>>37071206

Try doing cycling 5 times a week. On lift days take a longer route, preferably flat all round, maintain good speed around 80% of your top speed and add distance each week.

On days you don't lift find a good size hill and cycle up as fast as you can with out stopping. Cycle down and do it again. Add "reps" each week

A half mile hill should be sufficient

Oh make sure you eat and drink enough for fucks sake
>>
>>37071319

yeah some cyclists are assholes, but then again ask yourself what caused them to turn into an asshole? Was it some jackass meathead in a lifted truck blowing exhaust at them even though they were off to the right? Seriously those are the only types I have ever had an issue with.
