Is weightlifting in the morning (before work) and doing cardio in the afternoon (walk or jogging) crazy or going overboard? Should I just build cardio into my regular workout schedule?

Swap them around. Lift in afternoon to avoid injury and lift more, run before breakfast to burn off body fat.
