and

Stuff like oils, steak and fats are higher in calories, but oats and chicken are low calorie. Is there a difference in getting your calories from one type or the other?

Its easier to get your calories in with the high density stuff. That's more or less it - everything else would be dependent on what high or low calorie foods you're eating.
You'll usually get more nutrents out of the low calory dense foods

calorie is just a unit of measurement. Your question is like asking if there is a difference between 1 ton of iron and 1 ton of feathers.
What's important is the nutrients those calories come from.

What kind of effect is it likely to have on workouts if any? Eating chicken and rice is exhausting bc it's so low calorie. I'd rather eat higher calorie stuff and consume less matter. It's much less of a chore you know
Rule of thumb is consume enough of the low calorie foods as you can and then make up the rest of your intake with high caloric foods. The low caloric foods usually have more fiber and micronutrients (vegetables)

They may be the same calories but they're differnet macros.
Net calorie levels is the basic level of nutrition aka do you get bigger or smaller.
But macros will determine HOW you get bigger or smaller aka do you get bigger due to muscle or fat and same thing for weight loss (difference between being a shredded twig or shredded beast)
