I am the one that posted that pic. Maybe genetics is involved, but one day I shaved my head, and decided to just let it grow and never get a hair cut. That was like 3 years ago. All I do is shampoo every other day or so, and conditioner like once a week. My hair is really coarse and frizzy, so I never brush it, lest I rip all my hair out. The only time I sort of brush is in the shower, I gently run my fingers through it while using conditioner to get knots/tangles out. To get it to look like it did in that pic, it was a few hours after a shower and I just kept my hair down and let it dry.

Carrots and eggs have biotin, which is good for the natural oils in your hair making it shiny and giving thickness to it.
Iron promotes growth, so chickpeas and spinach are good.
Vitamin D is important for the hair follicle cycle and you can get that in milks, cheeses and fatty fish.
Kale, mushrooms and lentils have a high amount of copper, which helps with color and other crap I'm too lazy to look it up and forgot.
Oats have biotin, silica (good for strengthening hair), manganese, copper and zinc all useful. Having a manganese deficiency can mean hair loss, too.
Being low in omega-3 can make your hair dull and brittle as well, so walnuts and fish oil are helpful there.
Beef and wheat germ are very high in zinc and promotes hair growth.
I also mix extra virgin olive oil, castor oil and a few drops of tea tree oil together. Putting it in your hair and giving the ends extra attention has done wonders.

I don't know. I go to goth night fairly regularly, and there are a few guys into their 50's that manage to pull it off. They end up looking more and more like Keith Flint from prodigy. They do what they can with what hair they have left, and focus on clothing. I live in a college town, and the goth night mix seems to be a dedicated group of townies that have been doing this shit for 20 years, and a bunch of young kids that can't seem to figure out if they are goth or emo.
