take algae oil pils
that's where the fish gets its omega-3

They have a shit EPA:DHA ratio.

250mg DHA / 125mg EPA seems fine to me.
>>
>sound fishy

H-how?

Look terrible. You need more EPA than DHA. EPA/DHA 2:1 has best track record.
>>
>>37027534
some think it's 2:1
others think it's 1:2

a shit ratio (like what you called it) would be out of this range of ratios.

EPA and DHA have been shown to provide a wide variety of clinical benefits. Choosing a fish oil supplement richer in one of the two primary omega-3 types may help tailor, however little, its medicinal properties to your needs. For example, Mayo Clinic Professor of Medicine Dr. Stephen Kopecky recommends a 3:2 ratio of either EPA to DHA or vice-versa. According to the research reviewed here, DHA outperforms EPA in reducing total triglyceride counts and increasing HDL (good) cholesterol. Alternatively, EPA has a more beneficial effect on lowering overall LDL (bad) cholesterol.

In the cognitive domain, DHA appears to offer greater mental benefits. DHA has been suggested to be more effective in improving overall cognition and preventing cognitive decline in healthy older adults. While both forms of omega-3 have beneficial effects on the stress response, DHA seems to quell the neurological response (aggression) while EPA modulates stress-affected immune activity. EPA also seems to have greater anti-depressive effects.

according to a 2004 article published in the “Cleveland Clinic Journal of Medicine." The article reports that ratios of 2:1 or 1:2 EPA to DHA may be equally beneficial, since both compounds seem to work together.

https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/evolutionary-psychiatry/201604/is-fish-oil-beneficial-the-brain

>The tricky thing about omega-3 supplementation is that even though DHA is the major omega-3 in the brain, DHA supplementation on its own is a total bust. EPA needs to be at least twice as high as DHA in any supplement for there to be a positive effect in depression trials. For this reason I don’t recommend DHA algae products; there’s just no data to show they are helpful. EPA is apparently needed to get the available DHA into the brain, so EPA supplementation is way more important than DHA, which leaves us with fish oil as the best source.

You need a 2:1 ratio for enough of it to get across the blood brain barrier. Probably into muscle cell membranes as well.

like i said. it is a controversial topic.
some say you only need ALA and the body will produce whatever ratio it needs.

My supplementation has 400mg of EPA and 300mg DHA per cap. Is this an ideal ratio? I'm looking for cognitive and mood benefits. How many caps should I take daily?

The studies you're talking about supplement purified DHA alone. They don't compare it with EPA+DHA with varying ratios. You can't use that to support the efficacy of algae oil on muscle and brain functions.

The Cleveland clinic article is talking about cardiovascular outcomes. They say

>Thus, products that contain both in ratios ranging from 2:1 to 1:2 are probably equally beneficial, although this has not been rigorously examined.

It was published in 2004. Here's a rigorous 2012 review concluding EPA is better.

To prevent omega 3 deficiency sure. The body doesn't produce enough on its own for optimal health.
