If you played any edition of D&D before 3.5, that was explicitly true. Fighters ruled the game pre-6. At that point Wizards/Sorcerers unlock the ability to sling the mighty fire-ball.
2nd edition even had a mechanic where non-magical classes would level faster (less xp required per level) to give them a chance to shine in extended campaigns.
