He lifted his ruck when he fought in the jungles of 'nam but no otherwise he did not.
>>
>>36979707
Yeah, both of them actually. Both were in the army. One of them entered the army at 18 or some other young age and killed a lot of japs in China. The other one was really tall and had good bone structure, his wrist was like almost twice as thick as mine. He was also in the army and taught kungfu there.

My grandfather was at pearl harbor on USS Arizona when it got bombed.
He was just a typewriter worker, and when all of a sudden it was time to abandon ship, he told me he had to swim a mile avoiding tiger sharks, gunfire, drowning victims, etc.
He was one of the last surviving members, he died 3 years ago at 93.
Without even being my grandfather, he was the most honorable and humble person I've ever met and had a firm handshake.
He was a cardio bunny afaik.

>>

My paternal grandfather was a prodigy baseball pitcher in high school, according to my father one MLB team tried to draft him but he turned them down for reasons I cannot fathom. Then he went to fight in WWII with the Coast Guard, didn't see a lot of combat but the military back then trained soldiers much harder than they do now. As an adult he was over weight, but I'd say he lifted.

My maternal great-grandfather was a Green Beret in the US Army, did two tours in Vietnam when he was around 35, give or take.

Why are men such pussies now?

He started 40 years ago with some friends and together they formed a small club.

Old farmers (and I mean OLD; 70+) are often shockingly strong. And I don't think they're topping up with testosterone patches or HGH shots, either.

How do they do it, /fit/?
>>
>>36981566

Strength, provided you don't get seriously injured or whatever, is one of those qualities that sticks around well into old age if you keep using it. Even if you've lost a lot of mass.
>>
>>36981566
Lifetime of using their hands and bodies for labor and stubborn appliances. My grandpa is 70+ and he's got farm strength. I remember once trying really hard to open this stuck latch, and he just comes and flicks it open like it was a light switch.
I've also noticed farmers tend to have little patience for stuff, at least in my family. There's rarely any finesse or careful maneuvering around problems, when something is stuck they just fucking pull on it with everything they've got, like they don't have time for that shit. This gives them insane quick twitch muscle fibers in their arms.

Imagine surviving a friggin war, only to be forced into another one on the other side of the world. And now, more than 70 years later, the government that sent you into that war admits that it was wrong to start a fight over there.
>>
>>36979707

No, but I imagine that lifting was a lot more of a luxury back when my grandfather was young.

These days most people just take it for granted, but you probably didn't have a lot of time/money to stand around lifting heavy shit and eating a bunch of food if you grew up during the great depression.

Now, even if you're relatively poor, cheap gym memberships, and the low cost of food basically means everyone can be in pretty damn good shape if they want.

Maternal GF: a big and bulky man who worked for two decades protecting coffee plantations in Brazil at gunpoint and machete in hand. Survived several shootings and because of banging local married women had to fight a half a dozen gun duels against pissed husbands.

Paternal GF: tall and muscular country laborer from Spain, poor as a church mouse, still managed to bang half of the village´s women. The richest family's daughter got pregnant so she could marry him despite not being noble.

Both were muscular as fuck.

Neato. One Grandpa drove trucks in WWII, and then got saved from getting drafted by having kids.

Unless I'm remembering the stuff I read in my Vietnam War books, the South Vietnamese special forces were pretty effective, right up until the US military tried to scale them up. IIRC, they were effective at fighting the Vietcong and NVA because they'd use similar guerilla tactics as the Vietcong, but when the US started training battalions of people, they started operating more like conventional forces, and then started to be less effective.

Am I on the right track there? I suppose you might not know very much/aren't interested, but I love military history and I hate being wrong.

Nah m8 I love military history. My understanding of it is that the specially trained forces, who had motivated leadership were very good indeed. But the conventional army suffered from shitty leadership, nepotism under Diem (such as replacing the officers with catholic yes-men) and lack of motivation.

Supposedly though, when the US left after the Paris Peace Accords, the ARVN was able to stand on its own feet for a while because the US underwrote the military expenditure and had been working on "Vietnamitization" by incorporating ARVN units into operations and assigning them some so they gain institutional experience. But after the elections of 1972, Democrats who ran under the "gtfo vietnam" banner did away with that policy and South Vietnam fell because it literally didn't have the munitions to fight on.

Some historians (and this gets pretty heated on /k/ and /his/) argue that the US won the war, because North Vietnam came to terms with the US and South Vietnam at the Paris Peace Accords. But they gambled that a few years later, the US wouldn't hold up their end of the bargain (which was to supply south vietnam with munitions and some air support). Their gamble paid off and South Vietnam fell. I guess that argument is based on whether you want to call the second invasion of South Vietnam a new war or an extension of the previous one.

Regarding the munitions supply problem, I read one figure somewhere that during the height of the war, the ARVN artillery units were rationed at 1000 rounds per day, but in 1974 that was cut down to 100 per week or something like that.

Both of my grandfathers were nuclear physicists who became skinny as they got older.

Paternal grandfather was drafted to the Soviet army for a while in the 1960's. Learned a lot of stuff through his time in the army and still teaches me interesting things today. However, work and difficult living conditions in the Ukrainian SSR ensured his current condition as a skelly.

Maternal grandfather was very healthy when he was young and could easily perform 20 pistol squats at 16. After he retired from his career in physics, he started a small bank and became very successful through it before his Russian business partners poisoned him and liquidated it. Since then, his mental and physical health have prevented him from exercising at all.

My paternal grampa fought for the nazis at Stalingrad, he managed to return home somehow, then Romania turned arms and fought for the soviets up until Tatra mountains, he somehow survived that also, he was telling my dad how the Germans were digging up in the snow then waiting for a column to pass them, then the nazi got up from the snow and started machine gunning, the Germans fought until the last one there.

When he got home, he became some sort of priest for the village he lived in (Soviets banned that) and my dad said he became a silent fellow that used to spend all day working on his farm and church and all night reading at a petrol lamp. This 1.90m man never lifted weights or had any sort of decent comfort in his life, but he provided for a family of five. I never met a man like him, I wish I had half his determination.

hello darkness my old friend...

My grandpa is 92, has never done any exercise other than running between business meetings, and he isn't really in "good shape" (has lots of ailments and chronic pain) but he has a very strong will, so he recently bought an exercise bike and has a physiotherapist come over to do some light exercise with him once a week.
It's amazing how much impact a bit of exercise can do. He's been walking with one of those rolling crutches that you see old people use (dunno what they're called) for a few years and if he walks on his own it's really slowly and with lots of pain, but since he's started exercising has he been able to walk up the stairs (Which he hadn't done for 4 years) and has tons more energy.
Love that guy
