if one's metabolism slows down on a cut, how can one properly assess maintenance when transitioning back into a bulk without accidentally overshooting too far and gaining fat?
i've stopped losing weight on my cut completely, despite reducing calories to what SHOULD be 1000 below maintenance (after having success on a 500 deficit for a couple months). so i'm kind of stuck. i figure i may as well get back into a bulk because i've plateaued on my lifts pretty badly, lost strength on some, and injured my fucking shoulder. i wanna get stronk again, but i really don't want to gain any fat back.

Well, you could cut harder to break through the plateau but if you go much lower you might just end up feeling like shit.
I'd say switch up your routine. Or increase calories a little, and do a lot of cardio for a month or so to finish the cut. If you eat clean, you shouldn't gain much fat back.

>eat clean
but calories in/out, right?
and what's the difference between doing more cardio and keeping calories the same, and decreasing calories but not adding cardio?
but yeah if i go any lower there's no way i'd be hitting my protein requirements or really getting much nutrition at all.

You need to reverse cut. Add calories slowly back by 100-150 per week till you hit the maintenance mode range.

how will i know when i've hit it tho? i'm maintaining my weight as it is, so it's almost like i AM eating at maintenance.

>metabolism
>slowing down
>on a cut
I don't think you understand how metabolism works.

Reverse diet until your body's metabolism gets back to speed. Just add calories slower.

It does slow down tho. Your body is trying to be more efficient with what it has.

apparently not, because every TDEE calculator i've used inficates that i'm currntly at about a 1000 calorie deficit, give or take 100, and i'm not losing any weight. yes i weigh my food, even count macros on nutrition labels to figure out if the FDA lied about the calories.

should i then expect to start losing fat or gaining muscle first?

I just mena that if you decrease calories below 1000 you'll probably feel too shit to do cardio, or work out. It varies for people but I don't work out well on that much of a deficit.
Calories in/out is true, but if you eat clean you'll get decent protein and build muscle, if you just eat fat and carbs it's less effective.
