Sup /fit, couple of questions. Who here does martial arts? If so, what style? Do you compete, or just a hobby to stay in shape? Any fighters who have inspired you personally? Any difference in how you look at people as compared to before you took up your art? I myself do muay thai, I'm currently 13-0 amateur with aspirations to go to thailand for 2-3 months to train and start my pro career after. Pic related, is the fighter who inspired me to strive to become the best I could in this sport, Ramon 'Diamond' Dekkers
>>
i started doing kung fu 4 months back... i use it to cultivate inner strength

i now have more respect for myself and as a result respect other people more. i also reserve judgement based on external looks and look more towards their character

I've trained Silat and muay thai my whole life, ages 5-21. never competed in muay thai, competed in a few Silat tournaments, found them too easy. Won state every year for 4 years and won nationals in my weight division and every division up to 110kg two years in a row. I was in the 80kg division, fought up 3 divisions. I found the fights too easy, found that I was the only one who took training for the tournaments seriously, and then people were amazed when I won fights in such a one sided fashion. I would like to have a few amateur fights in muay thai as I feel the competition would be a bit stiffer, but also have no drive to seek fighting as a career, have a good job already, more focused on that than fighting right now. Just using the training as fitness and for the fun of it really.
>>
>>36838630
Damn man, I'd love to get into Silat. Too bad there's no one near me that even knows what the hell it is lol such a savage and intriguing style.
>>
>>36838704
Silat perisai diri is probably the most efficient, you need a good teacher though or its just watered down shit.
>>
I train mma since november, I'm loving it but I don't think I'll be competitive at it, I set a goal to step in the cage once and fight but after that we'll see.
It helps me stay motivated with my diet, lifting, and cardio, always feeling like I could do more.
How do I go about training in my off-days? Training's only 2 days a week and I lift mo-we-fri mornings but what can I do on my own to develop as a fighter except some running and hitting the bag?

boxing all my life but recently starting muay boran. i only reached a blue belt in bjj because it just isnt my cup of tea.looking to try to compete in UFC.i know i have to get back to bjj. I look at people the same. I never look for trouble. what part of thailand you going to? im trying to support a 3 month camp. but iv ben thinking of jus training abroad for a little while. like mexico, thailand, japan, or france.

inspiration is my family. i love my parents and want to repay them in the best way possible. That and im sick of being poor.

Olympic/Freestyle Wrestling + Boxing + Karate = God tier

Do it cause if I just lift I feel like the muscles are useless

Korean Zombie is my fave fighter rn and his style translates really well into street fighting

Wrestling definetely makes me reconsider musculature and temperment, the biggest guys can be useless in a scrap, and some of the most untoned and quiet looking ones can handle someone twice as stronk
>>
I've been doing tkd for 4 years, its a pretty chill enviroment and the cardio is killer. My leg strength/speed is phenomenal and I just generally enjoy it

I've been training in Judo, jj and bjj for about 10 years, started competing in the latter this year. The fighters that have inspired me the most are my teacher (a young 5th dan in Judo/JJ and BJJ purple belt that grew up in my hood) and a friend of mine who now is a semi pro muay thai boxer, and still bust his ass working full weeks as a construction worker. But if you want celebrities I guess Roy Jones Jr. because he's a pretty cool guy whoe doesn't afraid of anything and Eddie Bravo, because he fucking cracks me up.

I do look at people differently. As in, I mostly don't give a shit anymore.
>>
How much can heavy weightlifting impact on your boxing speed? Is it possible to train both if you focus on explosive reps and speedboxing?
>>
>>36838939
If you're serious about it you can just become obsessed with it and live and breathe it, you don't have to be moving to get better breh
>>
>>36839133
At least you're honest man, keep trying to get that first delicious W.
>>
So, fighters, what's your usual routine?

Is it really just
3 rounds skipping
3 round shadow boxing
3 rounds heavy bag
3 rounds pads
3 rounds light sparring/partner exercises
+ some push ups, sit ups, etc

like everyone says?
>>
>>36839212

>>
>>36839213
>karate

>>
>>36839734
It's bad for boxing. I know the internet experts say otherwise, but the science is pretty much done on this subject. Heavy lifting reduces your speed (so it turns out your mall karate teacher from the 80s was right). And explosive lifting doesn't help at all because fast movement while loaded with weight (jumping) and fast movement while unloaded (punches and kicks) are not even the same game, nevermind ballpark.
>>
Started Bjj, muay thai and mma. Going for a month now, 5 times each week.

Its fun and gets you cut
>>
>>36840069
My routine often starts with about 10 minutes of jogging, some lunges, jumps, skips, sprawls and some light footwork to get the hips warmed up a bit, all of that stuff extremely light paced just to get into the mindset and shit. Then I'll usually do power kicking and some speed kicking. Usually takes about 15 - 20 minutes, move onto some type of circuit of about 10 exercises. 60 seconds on 30 seconds off (mountain climbers, pull ups, push ups, sit ups, squats, burpees etc) do some heavy bag work and speed punching, then combos for about 15 - 20 again. Move onto some sparring and drills, striking only. Spar for 5 minute rounds, never have a set amount, just sorta finish when we feel like it. Footwork exercises for about 10 minutes, work on speed and then little sort of maneuvers and shit to do, end up finishing on an exercise like 10-down. Kick the bag 10 times right leg then 10 left, then kick bag 9 times right then 9 times left, all the way down to 1, then sometimes back up again if we have the energy.

Karate is a meme, it's just what people do because it's the only martial art they've known how to say since childhood. They get sucked in by their super tough instructor who can karate chop wood, then they stay there for their whole lives or until they get their ass beat by someone who knows how to fight properly. I don't like to talk poorly about martial arts because I'm sure there's plenty I don't understand, but I did shotokan karate for 3 years from 10-13 and I really don't feel it helped me in any way whatsoever. It's almost as if unless you're the strongest and most athletic, you will get fucked up, which for a self defence is bullshit. There should be no reason why a 110 pound person can't defend themselves against a 250 pound person if they have been training for a few years. And from a professional fighting perspective it's absolutely useless aside from the unorthodox footwork which doesn't necessarily have to be learnt from karate.
>>
>>36838437
I'm starting to train for muay thai. Haven't found a gym yet so I'm just running and working on my cardio
>>
>>36840086
MMA fighters train to an intermediate level - 2Xbw deadlift but not more than that.
>>
>>36840051
I want to, though, my technique is not there yet by any knowledgable person's standards, my cardio fucking sucks dick and my strength is still not where I want it to be. I'm working hard on the latter but don't know how to develop the former 2 by myself, especially quickly.

>>
>>36840191
It helps a lot to spar if you can find someone, if not, do some footwork drills and shadow boxing, do skipping, swimming if you can is good, cycling is good too, better for your body than running, less stress. Do sprints as well, mix up your workouts man. Don't just do the same running and bagwork every day. If you run like 5k try doing 60 seconds of jogging and then 15 seconds of flat out sprints, alternate everything.
>>
>>36840183
>but I did shotokan karate for 3 years from 10-13

And that's why you're not qualified to talk on the subject,
>>
>>36840217
I'm not saying I should have been a weapon at that age, and it's not as if I don't have friends who still train to this day, I'm just saying over 3 years a martial art should help with something, and it didn't. I have always been athletic, was a fit kid, was actually quite strong for my age. Like a 13 year old kid shouldn't have an inherent reflex to try and block a punch coming at your head full blast by just raising your forearm, should just move, don't tangle with it.
>>
>>36840212
Been doing HIIT for the last two weeks and I'm actually already seeing improvement, mostly incline sprints, and once or twice some bodyweight stuff. However on the days I lift I can't bike or run fast for more than a couple seconds without my legs burning out.
I used to love swimming but I ruptured my eardrum diving and now I can't.
>>
>>36840212
cont.
as for sparring I know a couple people I can spar with but we have no equipement other than mouthguards and gloves, so I'm not sure if we should without at least shinguards
>>
Started MMA, extra grappling(no BJJ around me), sometimes I go early for MMA and join the olympic wrestling, and lifting. Also did 2 years of judo before these.

Did judo from 2012 till 2014
Started lifting in 2013, been doing ever since
Started all of the other fighting stuff in 2014

I'm in love with it. MMA and grappling especially. I enjoy them incredibly much. I had 8 trainings a week, and for 1 year + i haven't skipped a single one.

Usually 3 gym, 1 grappling, 3 MMA, +1 private MMA with my coach(just mats, and helps me a lot with technique, plus i have no friends to do mats with)

But I moved to Malaysia last July and had to stop it all, I have no transport here to get to any gym, and no proper gyms around me, which is very sad. Been lifting tho.

Getting back to all of this in 2 months after I finally go back. I don't even miss my family or friends as much as my coach and my team and training.

Also, people I look up to is McGregor(been following him since the very beginning, since he beat one of the best Hungarian fighters... I'm Hungarian.)
I look up to my coach, an awesome guy, who motivates me more than anyone ever did, in both studies(I'm in uni) and training
And my other coach, one of the rising stars of the MMA scene in Hungary, he's unbeaten in pro scene, fighting in FFC now.

I only use a mouth guard and gloves when I spar and just try and avoid shin clashes, we spar quick and don't use much power so it makes it a bit safer. But if that's a big issue, just look for second hand gear or wear tracksuit pants and wraps around your shins. I used some foam insulation and duct taped it all around the outside of my trackies once. It worked fine, I just looked like a fuckwit. Shame about the ear drum brah, and on the days you can't push too hard just don't worry, do your best and keep the consistency

Cont. Just on your off days make sure you put in, it's been shown that cardiovascular endurance is lost very quickly compared to how long it takes to build it up. Don't quote me on this but I think it said something like 3 months of training can be lost in around 2 weeks of doing nothing. Somewhere around those figures I believe. So as long as you do something you'll be okay.
>>
>>36840617
>tfw sick right now and I have 1 of only 2 weekly training sessions this afternoon, going to miss it.
This is actually th first time I ever use the tfw thing... pic related makes me feel worse.
As for sparring yeah I'll get a guy I trust and go 50% with him without the gear and see how it goes.
>>
>>36840668
I've got this dude I was working with and helping out, let him into my gym, 3 inches taller, 25 pounds heavier who isn't great and dies after a few good minutes, but one day he films us and throws these ridiculous spinning shit and kicks that never land or just like slap my gloves with his toes then he makes like HL reels that make it look like he is kicking my ass. No longer trust.
>>
>>36840668
Uhh fuck breh just rest well and keep your vitamins and fluids up and get back on the mats. When I'm sick sometimes I just show up to training to fucking absorb the delicious knowledge by watching, but I live heaps close and I love the fight game so that's just me. Sometimes there's nothing you can do except be a piece of shit at home and wait till you're better though dude I know that feel too. Godspeed
>>
>>36840695
Fuck man that's straight cringe ahaha. I feel bad for you, my instructor prohibits people from watching the advanced class and prohibits all filming by people who he hasn't asked to do so. I always thought it was fair enough, like we aren't some secret fucking clan learning death touches and shit, but I see it's more a privacy and comfort thing to know if we have an off night it's all good and it stays on the mats
>>
>>36840716
The only thing he showed was me kicking him in the balls and he didn't have a cup. Never brought him in again.

Seidokaikan is kyokushin (see: poud the fuck out of each other until someone gets knocked down/out or time runs out) but with punches to the face legal. They literally founded K-1.

Enshin is the same as seido but includes throws.

Shotokan is pyjama tag where you get disqualified if you actually make contact.
>>
>>36840654
Ask me anything mate
>>
>>36840799
I might actually. I've trained muay thai, regular boxing (only for about 6 months, wasn't a fan of the gym vibe, mostly just mums who weren't even milfs hitting a bag and crying) some bjj, some tkd and I'm on Silat perisai diri right now. Been doing it for about 4 years and I'm loving it, I feel as though it's practical considering its an Asian martial art. I really do love martial arts and combat, turns me right on, I'll most likely find a karate dojo to train at one day or I'll just try and meet a karate practitioner and ask if he would like to train for a while till we are comfortable enough to spar full contact.

I box, currently 9-0 ammy with a ABA middleweight fight and a sponsorship up for grabs next Friday night.
