Saturated fats got a bad rap in the 1950s because Eisenhower's doctor shouted to the world that they were the cause of heart disease before he had a lot of data, and then later crafted data to convenience himself with the 70s "Seven Countries" study, intentionally avoiding France and Germany, two countries with high-fat diets.

When another scientist suggested it was sugar that led to heart disease rather than saturated fats, Eisenhower's scientist then had a hissy fit and called him a dummy head and discredited him.

Now there's more and more and MORE studies coming out saying sugar was the real bad guy all along and nutritionists, rather than doing what other scientific fields do and say "oh, well now we have to explain ourselves because we've been confronted with this new, more correct information", they bitch and moan and go "well that's not what was in MY textbook and these fifty year old studies say blah blah blah". NO scientific community has been so steadfast and stubborn over something like this, which is why no one takes nutritionists seriously, especially fat ones recommending "dark chocolate Kit-Kat bars".

"Atkins" diet is palatable to "morbidly obese" proud merkins who vomit each time they read the word "broccoli". Given the same calories, carbs are better at handling weight. As a matter of fact, you need carbs (keto being only an emergency mechanism you won't really keep on going)

CICO is all that matters for pure weight loss. Fat loss might be slightly aided or hindered by various diets (at the extreme, PSMF focuses on protein and eschews carbs and fat, to preserve muscle while forcing your body to burn body fat; Keto focuses on fat with some protein while eschewing carbs, so your body burns fat for energy), but your overall WEIGHT will respond fine to CICO.

The biggest caveat here is that CICO only covers the weight you lose. Where you get those calories from will determine how easy it is to stick to your diet--which is part of why Atkins got so popular anyway, it allowed people to eat a bunch of foods they loved while losing weight. It's also why focusing on eating more veggies tends to make weight loss easier--it's a lot harder to overeat lettuce than hamburgers.

Ignoring nutrients, 2000 calories of chicken will probably make you feel fuller than 2000 calories of lettuce, which will satisfy your palate less than 2000 calories of ice cream or french fries. They will have near exactly the same effect on your body weight, but the ease of keeping to your diet will differ.

For cutting you might want to take a more fine-grained approach to your macro distribution. E.g. keep protein intake at the normal level (+ maybe even supplement with BCAA or whatever, if you want) and then reduce carbs. Then every third-or-so-day you can do a carb cycle.
