Any former smokers here? Been smoking for 8 years and I'm starting to believe it's the main contributor to my shitty body
>>
wow really
>>
>>36812101
Well I was fat my whole life and body always looked like shit before I started smoking at 16. I went from 210 to 130 and still looked like shit, went 130 to 190 and back down to 170, always look like shit. Was only curious if anyone who was a former smoker had any physical improvements eventually after quitting.

I always knew smoking fucked you up but I was unsure how much it actually altered your body appearance
>>
>>36812134
Smoking fucks you up big time mate.

Quit now before you cause any other permanent damage.
>>
Smoked for 2 years and when I look back at pictures of myself I can't believe how unhealthy I looked.
It's been 2 years since I've quit and my skin has finally brightened back up and the lines on my face have filled back in because my body's started producing its own collagen again. Another 3 years and my lungs should be as healthy as a non-smoker's again.
>>
Nope.

I've never smoked or drunk alcohol in my life and before I started lifting I was a skinnyfat piece of shit.

I've known plenty of people who binge drink and take shit loads of drugs and smoke packs of cigs and they look aesthetic as fuck.

Genetics > everything.
>>
Smoking what?
>>
>>36812227
your mom's ass
>>
What about if you only smoke when you go out drinking? Like maybe once a month at the most or so I'll go out and either buy a pack for the night or scab some off my mates. Been doing this for about 3 years, never had an urge to smoke when sober it feels disgusting. I know if I ever felt I needed a smoke when not drunk then I'd stop altogether for good.
>>
>>36812097
Holy crap that picture is so full of shit.

>The smoker is more stressed than the non-smoker. It's a myth that smoking calms you down.
>The alcoholic is more sober than the non-alcoholic. It's a myth that alcohol gets you drunk.
>The meth user has less energy than those that don't use. It's a myth that amphetamines stimulate you.

The entire reason people get addicted to smoking is due to its calming effects. Sure, you develop a dependence, and so being a habitual smoker is going to mean you're more stressed than you would have been, but that's only when you can't smoke and have gotten used to smoking <x> amount per days.

If you're someone who smokes a cigar a week then, yes, that cigar will definitely calm you down.

Cigarettes.

I'm so far gone, I don't think my body or mind can come back from all the abuse I've given it over the years. Cigarettes are my main last crutch...I wonder if switching to vaping would be any better or do anything at this point. I'm a 25 year old NEET shut-in with a mad receding hairline and unflattering grey skinnyfat body
>>
>>36812241
I'm not so sure, when I smoked at first it was to help calm me down and deal with stress but after a couple months the smoking seemed to start amplifying my stress for some reason, which is partially why I quit.

Nicotine, similar to caffeine, is a stimulant. Everything you just said is incorrect. Go fuck yourself

>>

Well I've smoked for 8 years like I said, on average 1/3rd a pack a day. Besides physical effects, have you had any aesthetic changes?
>>
>>36812339

>>
>>36812315

Nicotine is in it's own class, similar to how Salvia Divinorum can't be classified as solely a dissociative or a hallucinogenic.

Nicotine stimulates the adrenal glands AND dampens activity in the thalamus. The former gives you a kick of epinephrine while the latter prohibits cross-chatter between the two hemispheres of the brain via the corpus colosum. The former is a stimulating affect, while the latter is a sedative affect.

At extremely high quantities - 1 to 2 grams packed into a peace pipe - tobacco acts as a minor hallucinogenic.
>>
>>36812335
ye ur still a degenerate
>>
>>36812241
The "buzz" or "calming" effect is actually your neurons/receptors getting so overloaded with nicotine that they get overstimulated and shut down/die off. To compensate, they "up-regulate" to get more receptors close to the synapse. Once the neurons regain function, they suddenly have significantly more receptors than they had before/get stimulated much easier and fire more often = increasing daily stress. This affects both nicotine receptors and acetylcholine receptors because of muh biology and I don't want to get into explaining it all right now so go earn your uni degree like I did so you can fucking understand the world around you.
Just trust me senpai.

>>36812272

Started smoking at 14 and quit at 26. Smoked a pack a day on average. Quit cold turkey, wasn't that hard after the first week. Had one a year later just because I was abroad and they had a rare brand I really liked and couldn't get back at home. It didn't taste good and I felt like shit. Pretty much confirmed that I never want to smoke again.
From my own and friends experiences who have successfully quit this is the most important tip:
Don't set a goal of not having a single cigarette ever. Or rather don't give up after you can't resist having one. Many people fuck it up by thinking that they failed and start smoking again. If you have one after not smoking for two weeks - no big deal. Just keep going. You might slip again a month later when drunk, but don't give up. Eventually cigarettes will become disgusting to you and you won't do it again.
Also, be rational - cigarettes are a net loss. There is little or no upside (unless smoking room gossip is a must in your workplace) and a huge downside.

>>36812241
>calming effects
The only time ciggys calm you down is when you're craving for one. The net calm is still negative you mongoloid.
>>
>>36812398
>Smoked a pack a day
See I never understood how people could do that, or maybe my body just is shit at handling nicotine because I could only ever smoke at most 3-5 cigs a day when I used to smoke.
>>
>>36812398
This

Everyone who wants to stop smoking listen to this anon right here.

I still smoke a cigarette every few weeks or so becayse i enjoy it, but if i smoke more than 3, it disgusts me and i stop.

I dont want to stop, but just to merely cut it down to a luxury thing, like a good meal or a good bear - something you can have every once in a while.
>>
>>36812493
its like gains - you have build it over time.

smokings a pack a day requires either insane boredom (something that enables you smoking) or iron lungs
>>
>>36812398
This is actually really good advice.

This method can also be used for getting your diet on point as well. Many people fuck up their diet with 1 chocolate bar, then think they failed and say fuck it and go binge on 9000 calories and spend the next week eating shit all day.
>>
>>36812398
Thanks anon, how old are you now and have you noticed any significant physical changes, appearance and healthwise?
>>
>>36812573
I'm 29. My skin is better (still generally bad tho, currently on roaccutane). Fingers and nails aren't yellow, whiter teeth (had them cleaned as well), my clothes don't smell and I save more than 100€ a month (Eastern Europe, so cigarettes are relatively cheap).
What regular smokers don't realize before they quit is that they feel like shit literally all the time. The thing is that for a serious smoker the withdrawal is worse, so feeling like shit becomes normal because there is no comparison point. When I was smoker I started to understand it in situations where I couldn't smoke for a while (like being seriously ill for a few days, or having a stronger brand first thing in the morning). We all know how that first cigarette will fuck you up, but you get used to the haze and it becomes the new normal because withdrawal is/was worse.
>>
>>36812699
>What regular smokers don't realize before they quit is that they feel like shit literally all the time. The thing is that for a serious smoker the withdrawal is worse, so feeling like shit becomes normal because there is no comparison point.

Can you elaborate a little? Do you feel like shit all the time because the damage from smoke fucked you up so much? Do you ever feel better? I figure at this point it would take at least a year if not more for my body to shrug off some of the damage and if I were transported 365 days into the future with no cigarettes I'd probably feel a lot different but, the gradual effect must make it seem like nothing has changed

You know, I get suspicious whenever "science" is saying that something is 100% good or bad. Very suspicious.

Nicotine itself is somewhat unhealthy.

Vastly less so than combining nicotine with everything else found in a standard cigarette, but still not the greatest idea from a health standpoint.
>>
>>36812335
I mean, smoking anything will introduce carcinogens into your system and damage your lungs, but pot doesn't have the sheer amount of added chemicals cigarettes do.
>>
>>36812511

Plebs. I've known people who during some phases of their lives smoked up to 5 packs a day.

It's worth mentionning I usually met them while they were in the hospital for metastatic lung cancer, stroke / heart attack, or COPD. Being breathless after walking 20 feet or having half of your body paralysed is less fun than it sounds.

Seriously guys, quit as soon as you're able to. Your 50-70 year old selves will thank me.

I'm in a small construction crew with a few guys that'll go through about a pack during our shift alone. I don't know how they do it, especially on fucking roofing/concrete/drywall days.
>>
>>36812775
Not the damage per se, it's just that smoking produces an unpleasant feeling. Try asking a non-smoker who has tried to smoke or do snus. It makes them feel sick and they can even throw up.
Smokers experience it differently because they build tolerance and the shitty feeling becomes normal for them. It's hard to notice for them because they smoke all the time, thus keeping a more or less constant level of shittyness. Non-smokers react differently because they have no resistance to it and they're not used to feeling like shit all the time. The only time a smoker feels something similar is usually with the morning cigarette. It will hit quite hard sometimes, but then the bad feeling goes down (but not away) and then you start maintaining your level during the entire day.

>>36812855
No good reason to vape imho. It might be less harmful than smoking, but I wouldn't bet on it. The chemicals are currently unregulated (correct me if I'm wrong) and made by chinamen who are happy to put poison into baby formula to save money. And even if the liquids look safe on paper, people don't take into account the reactions that happen on the coil while vaping the liquids. It can produce some nasty-nasty shit.

Overall I think that regular air is the healthiest thing to breathe. Use a straw or a pen if oral fixation is a problem.

>nicotine for health reasons.
That's just retarded.
>>
>>36812097
Yeah I really regret smoking so early.

Probably missed out on tons of height gains.
>>
>>36812834
Well even though I started smoking at 16, my diet was also horrible up until that point. I wasn't educated at all on food and would drink 4-5 sodas and eat as much food as I pleased up until around that age maybe 3000-4000 daily calories. Then I started smoking and moderating my calorie intake and by the time I was 19 I went from 210 to 130 in 3 years. Stayed around 130-140 until I was 21 and drank in excess for 3 years until I was 24 back up to 190 pounds.

It was hard to blame smoking for my shitty looks because I ALWAYS looked like shit, even at 6-7 years old I was overweight and never knew any difference and just always assumed I'd have a shitty body
>>
So, can a mid 20s body repair from nearly a decade of smoking damage?

I'm not exactly squeeky clean either, man. I started smoking pot when I was 17 and still occasionally do. I've never tried coke, but I have snorted addy a few times, though the last time I did that was two years ago. Neither substance is good for you and people SHOULD avoid them, but we're not perfect. I guess the point I was trying to make in my original post was the fact that pot shouldn't be Schedule I while cocaine, morphine and opium are Schedule II, but I was having a laugh more than anything. If it makes you feel any better, I have friends that started pot and way worse at the ripe old age of twelve. Yet, they all have jobs and keep trucking on. Moreover, they're still genuine people and I enjoy their company. Don't shoot yourself in the foot, you still have a functioning brain and body. Use them to the best of your ability.

To drive the point further - if you give a irritated/nervous/anxious non-smoker a nicotine gum or a cigarette it will only make them sick. I give you that feeling like shit and/or throwing up might distract them from the previous problem at hand for a while. I figure anxiousness would have a cumulative effect.
Either way - cigarettes have nothing to do with calming down. It's a myth and an excuse of smokers trying to justify their shitty habit.

To be honest mate, smoking isn't really that bad for your health. I mean it is for some people, but basically 99% of your health is determined by GENETICS.

George Burns smoked 300,000 CIGARS in his life.

THREE HUNDRED THOUSAND.

CIGARS.

He also drank a lot of alcohol.

HE LIVED TO 100.

THE GUY WAS A FUCKING CENTURY OLD.

And yet he did all the things we're told are bad. So how did he live so long?
>Oh! Oh! he must have drank loads of kale or did yoga or crossfi-
IT WAS HIS FUCKING GENETICS. That's why there are COUNTLESS teetollars who die early because they got fucked by genetics. As unfair and annoying as it is, health is pretty much determined ENTIRELY by genetics.

By all means stop smoking if you want to save money, but don't do it for health reasons because it won't make a difference. If you have alpha genetics, you'll be fine.

The only thing vaping has going for it right now is there no information for long term studies that exist to show us how 20 years down the line people who vape regularly have their lungs shut down.

I was/do vape occasionally because it is a great crutch to reduce your smoke/nicotine intake.

Took me about 8 months but I'm at 0% nicotine and I might use it once every couple days if I get stressed about something. But the goal is to not even vape anymore.

You have to realize that there are no benefits to vaping or smoking, you are just putting some foreign substance that we already know is bad for you into your system and weighing it against cigarettes as a self-deceiving rationalization.

"It can't be as a bad as cigarettes" does not in any way mean you should be using it...it doesn't even get you high. Both are terrible for you. Drop the cigs, drop the vape.

I'm ashamed to admit it but I finally managed to quit by doing cardio. The endorphine kick and feeling like a weak piece of shit for being so out of breath got me through the first months.

I made the switch to vaping and I haven't smoked a cig for 2 months. Vaping actually give you more of a throat hit and is stronger, and according to the NHS is 95% less damaging than cigs. There's no reason not to.

Smoking kills your tastebuds and your appetite. Smokers lose weight because you eat less, not because you eat healthier. Whenever you meet a skinny person who eats a lot of junkfood, I can almost guarantee they smoke or do other drugs.

pro tip: it's not
smoking will affect your respiratory tract and teeth in the long run (many many years) if you're heavy smoker, but that's that; olfatory and gustatory system recovers quickly after you quit smoking

other than that it is pretty much the blandest of drugs, despise the negative advertising; even caffeine is more potent, both good and bad effects

I quit smoking about 4 years ago.

I ended up having to quit fast food, too, because once I got my taste buds back, I realized how awful it tasted.

I also felt a bit better in general after quitting (I don't notice it anymore, though). Just clearer. Like a light nausea had passed.

And I also haven't had a cold or been sick since I quit (4 years).

But, no, I don't think smoking is your only problem.
Don't expect quitting to magically fix your life.
You need to exercise and eat better, too.

You really ought to quit, though. Those things are way too expensive and make you smell like shit.
>>

> implying any of these has to do with his shitty body
> implying any of these make cigarettes not blandest drug

of course, it has negative effects, it's still a drug, dumbass

nonetheless, the effects of cigarettes on CNS are nowhere as intense as the effects of alcohol or marijuana on CNS, for instance
and takes a fucking massive amount of smoking (1 pack a day for years) to get any of these effects, which is not the case of neither marijuana nor alcohol
>>
smoking is just as bad as alchohol. It clogs your arteries over time so you may be thin as fuck bust your ass outside everyday but have worse breathing and unhealthy body then a fat ass. Your lungs, heart, arteries are extremely fucking important for just being alive and fitness related shit. Smoking is for simple people that don't think much about their health

This. The "cigs don't really calm you down" shit some people push is fucking retarded.

You don't do anybody favors when you try to pretend nicotine isn't a psychoactive chemical with effects other than "makes you want more cigarettes". All you're doing is setting angsty kids or stressed young adults up to start questioning if you're full of shit about the other health risks of cigs too when they finally cave and spark a cig from a friend during a particularly anxious time in their life and feel the calming and focusing effect of the drug.

I have known over a dozen smokers personally. Each and every one of them has a story about how they started smoking during a period when they were anxious and stressed all the time and the cigarettes made them feel better. Pretending their experiences aren't real doesn't help them quit. If anything, refusing to understand nicotine use as a self-medicating stress-coping mechanism that needs to be replaced with healthier and more therapeutic alternatives sets people up for failure before they even start.

Pushing the "they don't actually calm you down" meme makes you an asshole, plain and simple.

did you seriously link side affects of different drugs as your retort? did you even read the pages I link that are directly related to smoking, which is the entire point of this thread? I think now is the time to read the 3 links I posted above and refute the points listed there since you believe smoking only affects "respiratory tract and teeth and that's it"

nobody in a good med school will sit on 4chan and defend smoking, calling it a "bland drug" when it causes disease in more than 16 million americans each year and is responsible for more than 480,000 deaths each year, in america alone.

here's one more source for you. trying reading it before you say something even more stupid than what you responded with:

Been dipping for a couple years now, at the peak of my use was only 1 lip a day, sometimes 2 (on the weekends etc.) most recently only 2-3 a week.

That picture is correct even though it doesn't explain why. Nicotine is a stimulant and long-term chronic use of stims makes you nervous in general. It induces your brain to run on and expect norepinephrine and spastic random rushes of dopamine. Thus, since "neurons that fire together wire together", you are conditioned to act that way proportionally more as a function of time in general, and you find yourself doing those weird, ADHD movements like tapping the table or grinding your teeth.

I've been thinking about quitting (not really actively "trying" because I like it so much) for months now, tried seriously once, and been consciously cutting down since. Now I'm getting tested for a clinical trial that pays a lot of money as long as you're not a smoker for the past year (lol), dipped Saturday night, so I've got to stay clean for a while. I know I can do it but goddamn are the cravings real.
>>
>>36818502
>nobody in a good med school will sit on 4chan and defend smoking
kek

at what point did I defended smoking, dumbass?
what I'm saying since the beginning, it is: 1) it's not the cause of OP shitty body 2) if anything, its the blandest of the drugs (obviously still a drug)

when I talk about "respiratory tract and teeth, that's it", I'm clearly talking about obvious somatic effects of smoking; cardiac effects etc being far less common, though the at increased risk.

not to mention comparing mental health effects of nicotine to those of alcohol or marijuana is purely nonsense. even caffeine impairs more strong effects on mind than nicotine. (having had the experience of volunteering on recovering smokers group, most people that do want to quit smoking, do it surprisingly quick, sometimes even cold turkey works)

cross your data with deaths and other negative effects impaired by alcohol use (including drunk driving, domestic violence, and other publich health subjects etc); you'll see what I'm talking about. research your own links.

Smoked a pack a day from 16 to 29, quit 6 months ago. Over all I haven't noticed a huge difference, but there have been some key points.

>I feel slightly less winded when lifting, not a huge amount, but squats and deadlifts have been tiring at the end. This has contributed to me getting stronger since I can push a little farther. I haven't made massive gains, but I put some weight on my squat and finally got my deadlift to lmao 3pl8 at 160.

to be fair, I haven't done any of those things regulary. I saw what they did to friends and relatives and I never found them interesting, I got bullied for that though.

Like, I smoke one cigarrete once.
I drank a bit a couple of days last summer, but by that I mean that I drank about 4-6 sips of something. I guess you could put all the alcohol I've drank in one normal sized glass and you'll have plenty of free space.
I think the last time I took medicine could be... about one year ago? I feel proud about that.
And the only substances that count as drugs that I have taken or I take from time to time are caffeine or theine.

I haven't tried any recreational drugs, although I feel quite curious about mushrooms.

It can be done brah

I smoked weed every day from 14-17 years of age, then I was drunk as good as every day from 18-20, I smoked cigarettes from 13 - 22, I used to take various party drugs and hallucinogenics more or less regularly. But at 22, I had finally quit every vice I had, including sugar, starches, porn, masturbation, popular music, television and video games.

It can be done and we all carry that power within us, you just have to will it.

Pornography and masturbation are both decidedly bad for you, they'll break your spirit and your mind both. No matter how little you use it, it still erodes your soul. Notice how many pornography addicts do not believe in love?

The truth is, that it is entirely an unnatural, damaging hebrew indulgence, loved by scared and immature weak-minded narcissists.

Starches I don't have an inherent problem with, but as an aryan man, my body is poorly adapted for it. A meditteranean or oriental man is a different story.

Sugar is again sinful in the same way that pornography and masturbation is.

Popular music, television and video games I just naturally gravitated away from as I became a stronger, better person. I spend my free time either reading, meditating, making music or in nature these days.

You can do it too broder, you must just dispel these notion that there is such a thing as "moderation" and that something as obviously weaponized as pornography is harmless because (((sexologists))) and (((psychologists))) tell you so.

Pro-tip: Don't trade one vice for another, just quit it outright. Your body was made to live without all this poison and you can restore yourself, just as you can restore your spirit.

Not that anon, but they aren't really good in any way. You can say a thing is okay in moderation, but that would first require you know its prolonged absence. I haven't watched live tv in like 5 years and gave up the streaming jew in the past 2 and there is a world of difference. Pop music is blatantly and poorly manufactured trash for tweens and tweens at heart.

The rest is a slightly different matter, but one that is sensible. Sugar is a vice like little else, worse than smoking. Starch makes some people feel like crap.

I fap for religious purposes amid periods of abstinence and just don't like people that way, so no comment there.
>>
Smoking is a social habit so to stop it you need to stop smoking around people who smoke or else you'll never get over it. I only really smoke if I'm with other people who smoke or I'm drinking to get drunk.

This

I could never quit when I tried to go hardline no cigs, I had much better results when resolved to never buy a pack. I might still have one if I'm out drinking, but even that is getting less enjoyable.
>>
>>36823150
>I might still have one if I'm out drinking, but even that is getting less enjoyable.
I too have quit similarly but I must disagree because I have done research on this. Once you become a non-smoker the amount you need to drink to get that special buzz from booze and cigs increases. You need to already be drunk and in the process of drinking another drink for a cigarette to be enjoyable.
