How can I not be "skinny fat" anymore? I'm a 23 yo girl, 125 pounds, 5'8" but I can't seem to get toned, especially around my abs. I'm im the gym 3-4 times a week, doing cardio and lifting. I eat pretty healthy and don't eat sugar at all. What am I doing wrong/what can I do to tone up?

When you say you're trying to get "toned" you mean you're trying to add muscle and burn fat.

First off, you need to eat better. It's not about cutting carbs. It's about getting protein and eating at least a little bit more than your body needs. Use a TDEE calculator to determine how much calories your body burns each day and eat 100 or 200 calories over that.

Second, you need to lift heavy. Your body isn't going to add muscle if you're not telling it it needs it. Do squats and deadlifts, but with enough weight to where you can only lift 5 or so per set.

You have a fortunate bodyfat distribution from what I can see here so you'll be looking like one of those instagram sluts in no time.

Your exact frame, bone density, exact amounts of muscle, exact amount of fat, other tissue. Genetic + environmental.
Then there's other things like specific organ/organ system current condition (100% perfect functioning, 90% great, 80% bretty gud, 70% etc).
Exactly what you're doing with your brain (brain can use 400 cals a day. That's quite a lot. A thinker might literally use a couple of hundred more calories just from a day of hard brain work as opposed to if you just sat on your ass and watched TV).
Stress levels. Adrenal gland efficiency. Lingering cortisol.
Homeostasis - if you're in colder places throughout the day (outside, a cold library) as opoosed to warm and comfy at home, you literally will use more calories to maintain body temp.
And then there's the exact composition of what you eat. The macros. And then even if you and some others girl's macros look the same, getting down to the micronutrients (because the amount and balances and quantities feed back into your general organ/organ system/homeostasis performance). Your 40-30-30 from white rice, whey brotein and canola oil will perform markedly different on a cellular level to her 40-30-30 from veggies+spices, organic chicken breast and coconut oil.

Basically there are fucktons of variables. Figuring out your own body is difficult enough without then comparing it to others'. Millions of things are happening on a cellular level. Do your best but as long as you're moving in the right direction don't get hung up on understanding/mastering fluctuating minutiae.

You're already a low bmi for your stats and close to underweight. If you still look like shit its because you have no muscle and you're all fat. In his case you wouldn't need to lose weight to stop being skinnyfat, you actually need to put on muscle to look more firm and toned which probably means putting on weight as muscle is more dense than fat.
