Any foolish beginners mistakes you look back on and cringe?
Any moments of gym autism you would care to share?
Any memes you fell for?
Any pointers not contained within the sticky?
>>
Here is my very first weight routine from when I was a junior in high school:
>15 lb dumbbell curls
>rest one minute
>sit-ups
>rest one minute
>15 lb dumbbell flies, lying on my bed
>rest two minutes
>repeat 5 times
Every other day. I genuinely thought I was making gains. It wasted quite a bit of my time as well, because of how much I rested.
>>
>did Bro splits
>neglected leg day first 5 months of lifting
>fell for the no ab work needed meme
Sucked
>>
Dropped light weights when I was a beginner at the gym.

I still cringe looking back
>>
>exclusive machines
>no deadlifts

Also when I started deadlifts I had fallen for the abs are made in the kitchen not in the gym meme so I wasn't training and, got a huge imbalance and my back hurt like hell until I started training abs
>>
>no pull ups
> afraid eating would make me fat

Seriously, what the fk ?
>>
>>36789948
I started lifting with a "Brad Pitt from Fight Club in 12 weeks!" workout I found online. I lost about 25 pounds and built a little muscle but I did learn a lot of good movements and got into a habit of regular workouts, and after the twelve weeks I started lifting properly, so I guess it wasn't the worst thing in the world.

Came to /fit/ and started a thread saying

"Going to the gym for the first time. Any tips or routines I should be doing?"
>>
My first day in the gym I went to the local World Gym, which was owned by some elite power lifting coach that used to train with Arnold. I started telling him I'd signup if he showed me around & that I wanted to do a routine called "Starting Strength". He proceeded to tell me he'd never heard of it, and showed me how to bro-split style train. I proceeded to ignore his advice & listened to you retards, did GOMAD+SS+ bulking shakes + fast food (IIFYM) for 6 months. Guess how that turned out?

I made some mistakes, especially regarding form. But I guess Its not something you cant learn solely from reading a book or watching tutorials, you need to try lifting and then compare it with theory. I dont really cringe looking back at my beginner phase, because even as a beginner I was better prepared than majority of DYELs in a small gym in academic house where I live.
>mfw correct form is so rare I dont even expect to see it anymore
>mfw the only guys who seem to know what they are doing are on brosplit

I dont think so. Also, I didnt mean that necessarily asking for a spot at 1pl8 (40 kg) is bad. If you are auschwitz mode you might need a spot benching that little, but this guy was a typical skinnyfat and was easily doing over ten reps with that weight. It just felt awkward to spot someone doing cardio.

I don't think resting is a waste of time.
I rest between sets. I try to lift heavy as I can, so I wait til I feel i'm ready to do a full set.
>>
>>36790424
Bro splits do work. They just aren't where you want to start. Start with a strength program like SS or SL. Move to a bro-split after enjoying the early easy gains. Without the major compounds, you just don't have the strength to get the most out of isolation.
>>
>>36790117
This.

I'm just nervous to go up to those areas in the gym by myself. I feel so out of place and don't really know my forms very well.

Its not my concern whether they work or not, I am on GK right now. Anyway as I said, those guys are doing brosplit with babyweights. It is kind of ridiculous, plenty of the do benchpress, but I am yet to see anyone benching more than 70 kg.

Didn't squat for about two years into my lifting from ages 15-17. Did quad extensions instead and just other shit, some lunges. Never had a squat rack at home gym so just did what I could until I made my own money to pay my way into a commercial gym.

Just found out I have been reloading wrong the whole time. I thought you dropped to 60% and then worked your way back up in small increments. That explains why my progress has been so slow.
>>
>>36791049
Fair enough. Some people aren't training for mas. Maybe they're looking for something else. I actually do high reps at moderate weight because my goal is explosive power. I force myself to do every motion like I'm trying to kill something. This is mainly for my other activities. kickboxing and basketball being the main concerns.

So many squats and box jumps.

When I first started hitting the gym my dad (who is obese) told me 'you should drink at least one sports drink between every 5 lifts son. Trust me'

I believed him and I did it. For 3 weeks I would lift 5 times, then drink an entire Gatorade, then keep going.

Eventually the predictable outcome happened and I wet myself while I was lifting and got a 2 week ban from the gym. Apparently someone had given me the nickname 'The Gatorade Gusher' and someone had drawn a small Alligator wearing a diaper on the floor where I wet myself. Obviously I had realised my mistake by then. Never listened to my dad again.
>>
>>36791106
>the Gatorade gusher

I'm calling bullshit on this story
>>
>>36790999
Interesting point of view. When I started, I was so excited that I would hit every part of my body everyday for like 3 hours. Eventually, my dad(who used to bodybuild) told me what I was doing was wrong.

I then started doing brosplit. By then I guess I had enough strength. But I would always aim to use enough weight to where I would struggle with my 5th rep but still be able to push it out. It's been working.
>>
>>36791106
Lulz. I've known people to sip a carb drink between sets, but Gatorade is a meme unless you are legit dehydrated.
>>
>>36790999
What are Bro splits?
>>
>>36791103
Different anon here, I scoffed at first at 'explosive power'. But That seems fun and like it might actually translate. Although I think most athletes in those sports focus mostly on bodyweight and closely related training exercises. There should also be a respect for any of us who at least working out regularly. More than most can say truthfully
>>
>>36790915
You're doing cardio, breh. 1-6 strength, 7-12 mass, 13+ resistance.

Try 12-10-8-6 reps raising your weight every set.
>>
I used a 6kg manual to do curls all day.
I thought I would get huge biceps if I did it enough.
>>
>>36791131
Splitting body parts to different days of the week outside of a core movements program or alternating push/pull. As in:
Day 1 Chest/back
Day 2 Arms/abs
Day 3 Legs
Day 4 rest/cardio
etc...
>>
>>36791145
There's a lot of support to back up the explosive power thing. You just don't see pro boxers doing low rep. They want to hit hard and often. Inertia is the biggest factor. Low reps at near max just mean more mass and less endurance. It doesn't matter that you can swing for the fences if you can't keep your guard up.
>>
>>36791160
ohsheet.jpg I used to do that with my brother. Now we do Push/Pull/Legs. Is that not so bad?
>>

JUST HOW

Back when I did them they were by far my least favorite exercise...Just so uncomfortable being in that hole.
>>
>>36791018
Bruh I've been there, couldn't even curl 5's when I first went and only went because my school had a gym. Honestly no one gives a fuck if you're small in the gym. Read about the compounds on Stronglifts, swallow down the nerves and power through the first weeks. Starting lifting was the best thing I ever did.
>>
>>36791051
It's never too late to make it, in terms of world class gains you do need to have a certain genetic pre-disposition but you can easily look good with hard work. Starting late is better than never starting.
>>
>>36791201
Nah. it's fine. it's just that everyone here will shitpost about compounds.

I've known plenty of very fit people that do brosplits. It really depends on your goals.

Around here we focus so much on squats, deads, and bench that it's easy to forget that there are other lifts.
>>
>>36790191

>>
Cutting with pizza and shit food and thinking its okay because it's low calories

Getting addicted to ephredrine

Fuckarounditis in general, thinking I was strong for benching 1 1/2 plates and being satisfied

Yeah., this one gets people. It should be "Eat bigger to get bigger,"

As in, as your mass increases, and you BMR goes with it, you have to consume more calories. Anything consumed past what your body needs to rebuild muscle is just making you fat. Leanbulk for life, familia. Do the math regularly.
>>
I fell for the SS meme.
>>
>>36790071
Well, at least you were increasing the amount of nuclei in your muscle cells, which in return made your progress faster once you started lifting real weights and eating right, so it probably wasn't a 100% waste of time. Very much a waste of time, but not completely.

Really regret doing that, it fucked my knees for more than a year, had to quit lifting and sports for a while. So lesson is be smart about your programming. Do SS until you completely stall and then pick a more suitable program.

In my case back in the day, I did something right by doing a full body workout, and no meme 1 bodypart a week workouts. However, I failed when it came to increasing the load every workout, and I also had way too many exercises for one session in the gym. When I look back at my old workout logs I cringe so hard, literally the same weights for 3 weeks in a row at the start. Thankfully after about 2-3 months or so of lifting I finally came to the realization that increasing the load each workout was the way to go. I also fell for the "eat a ton of food" meme, so I got a little chubbier than what was needed for a bulk.

Despite making all these mistakes I still put on a ton of muscle the first year (enough to be known as the "roid abuser" amongst morons), but imagine the gains I missed out on and the extra fat I put on which made it so that I had to cut for about 2 months extra.

I cringe so hard thinking about back then. It's been almost 10 years.
>>
>>36792289
Maybe you should work on your form if you fucked your knees. I've always been very serious about leg workouts (being my favorite and all), and I've never had any knee problems at all.
>>
>>36791160
I-is that bad?
>>
>>36792506
No. Depends on goals. I love brosplits. But I'm not training for mass either. For an athletics lifting program starting with full body and moving to brosplits is great.

The important thing is having a plan of some type. sticking to it. And changing it as needed to meet your goals. The concept of one routine being the ultimate answer is bullshit.

Self evaluate constantly.

My training weight BP is 60kg at 6' 6 103kg. I always ask a random dude to spot my last set. Nobody has ever said no, smiled, smirked etc. There's nothing autistic when it comes to safety. Also when will you people realise weight doesn't fucking matter
>>
>>36791018
Beginner here, this was honestly harder than squatting my own weight for the first time. It's terrifying, but you only need to gather the courage ONCE, and then you'll see nobody's watching you. You can do it, anon. Watch youtube videos, practice with low weight until you're confident, and just focus on your workout.

this is a good thing to tell newbie scared shitless, but that's so wrong. you should be able to tell this from all our threads on /fit/.

people naturally look around the gym when they're resting. if you're doing something stupid, they are judging the shit out of you. that's not going to change. you just need to not do dumb shit and/or not care what people think.

The muscle is the only cell in the body that has more than one nuclei. By lifting weights more nuclei is added to the muscle. The amount of nuclei in the muscle cells dictates how big the muscle can get, the potential size basically.

You should know this Anon, instead of spending your time finding funny memes.
>>
>>36795089
I've had no problems developing abs without hitting them with an isolation exercise. It's probably fairly genetic; some may need ab exercises, whilst others don't.
>>
Always go gym for like 3 months solid then end up losing motivation for 3 months until I start going again and repeat

First time I went to the gym I did Romanian dead lifts instead of standard deadlifts, also complimented a guy doing 27.5kg tricep extensions on a machine and he told me I would be able to do that after a year of consistent working out.

You should be hitting each muscle group twice per week for maximal gains, whatever your goal may be. That's why bro splits are bad.
>>
I was doing squats once and the fucking weights fell off the right side of the bar, causing me to lean and all the weights to fall off the left side. I never lift any barbells without clips now. That shit was embarrassing

i'm a fucking retard so please correct me, but the main reason they're looked down upon is that compound movements are the most efficient way to make gains, and brosplit relies on isolation movements which are inefficient and can easily miss out/undertarget many muscles?
>>
>>36795886
i made a hole in my floor by setting the weight too far from the handle

see i get annoyed at how long it takes to slot a disc onto the bar, sliding it past the entire spinlockable part which make up the outer 16" of the bar, so i set spinlocks at about 4" from each end. my basic misunderstanding of physics meant that as soon as i unloaded a 10kg plate from one end, the leverage tipped the bar 90 degrees and pierced straight into the floorboard

thank fuck my foot wasn't there or i might be making this post about how i lost my foot
