Anyone else go through long cycles of working out diligently followed by long stretches of sloth and losing all progress? I'm talking months of getting fit and working out regularly, then months of giving it up, then back to working out back to where you were etc...

I've been in this trap for 3 years now. I can't figure out how to convince myself to make it a constant lifestyle habit

Same here man. Used to lift, then I got pretty sick. Started lifting again, then went overseas for a year to Europe for study. Now back and taking 5 class's at a time and working 30+ hours while also doing rugby, it's hard

Yep. At the end of winter of 2013 I could deadlift 4 plate for 5 reps.

Today I'm going for 340x5.

Life sometimes gets in the way and keeps you from making consistent progress. We're not all super hardcore.

Just try to stay above average and don't quit for good.
>>
>>36599264
Nope. I'm addicted to the feeling of lifting.
>>
You sound like a normie. Try being an autistic OCD retard like me who obsesses over living a certain way in that specific time.

-From 2004 to 2010 it was WoW day in day out.

-From 2010 to 2016 (and going on) it's been lifting + counting calories & tracking macros

Who knows what it'll be next? I spend $3000 on a home gym now, after a 4 years of lifting at the gym. So I am pre

It's from a Million Dollar Extreme video. Forget which one though. YouTube it. It's at the very beginning of the vid. One of the longer ones if I recall. Good luck.

You need either a love of fitness or strong character to commit fully. You've got neither.

This. Endorphins are fucking phenomenal. It's like I get high on exercise, without any of the freaky ass brain fuckery. No matter how bad my day is, no matter how pissed I am, I can fix it all by channelling my energy into having a great lifting session.

Don't buy into this mindset. It'll pervade into every aspect is your life and lead to mediocrity in everything you do. You'll be just saying "Well I'm better than others" but that's selling yourself short. Make it bruh.

i don't know that feel, sorry anon.

going to the gym for 2 years has become part of my routine, just like my morning piss. if i don't lift when i'm supposed to i have a shitty day because i get thrown off from the norm

This happens to me about once every three months. When it happens I usually take a week off from lifting and just give myself a small vacation from the gym. I don't lose strength and then when I get back to the gym I allow myself a deload and spend the next week easing back into hitting it as hard as I can. It helps me regain my energy and I'm right back to pushing my limit within a week or two.

That mental exhaustion is real man, especially if you have a lot going on outside of your training.

Just don't quit, deload and allow yourself easy workouts if you need to but just keep going and keep your diet right. Motivation comes and goes and that's just how life is. You just have to be able to take a step back and remember why your doing this.

The times that you really mold your character and grow and change are when you push past all that shit that tries to get you to quit. There's not really any easy way to do it, you have to practice fierce will power and if you aren't able to then you don't want it as bad as you think you do.

Sorry if anybody mentioned this before but I didnt feel like reading all the comments.

I was like this for a really long time OP. Like 3-4 years. I was even ashamed of my body, ironic right, since I still had a better body than 90% of males my age. I was still embarassed, because people knew I had been going to the gym for a few years, and I had not much to show for it.

This all changed when I decided to start calisthenics, you know, barstarzz kind of street workouts. I loved it from the start, outside in the fresh air, no sweaty crowded gyms, feel in sync with my body etcetc. Now I feel motivated to go, every single day, I love doing it.

Sure I believe I could get bigger if I went to the gym instead, but the moral of my story is: find a workout, sport, routine, whatever, that you really like. If you just follow a set routine made by somebody else because "it gives you most muscle mass", and you hate it, and feel like working out is a chore, youll go alot less, which in turn, is counterproductive.

tl;dr: find a workout that you really like, because if you like it, youll train more often, and training more often is better than becoming demotivated because of some boring routine and not training at all

Not so much with fitness, but I do this with academics/life responsibilities.
I'll have my shit together and be on top of my game for three weeks, then get lazy and sit on my ass smoking weed for two weeks

I know this all too well. Fortunately, muscle memory kicks in and it doesn't take too long to get back where you left off.
>>
>>36599264
The longest I did that was a month.

But I was back at my previous levels after 1 or 2 weeks of lifting again.

Now, I'm at the point were I won't take more than 1 week off.

And then no more than 2 or 3 weeks a year.
>>
>>36599340
this is me exactly.. I even think the dates are basically the same for my phases.

I suffer intestinal problems that kick in every few months and all I can do is take pain killers and sleep through it. It's an issue I will never be rid of and its bad for weeks at a time but when it's bad if I try and do anything serious even sit ups I shit myself.
My life sucks.

For me it would be long stretches of progress followed by some kind of minor injury. It was never anything big, but enough to scare me from squats and deadlifts for a month or two at a time.
>>
>>36599264
This is me
>>
>>36599264
Nope, whenever I feel that lazy feeling coming in I think back at all the work I've put in up to now and what a waste it would be of blood sweat and tears to give up now. Gets me lifting everytime. It's pretty much become self sustaining for me now.

The laziest I get is maybe starting a workout an hour later than I'd planned to.
>>
>>36599264
nigger I'm depressed as fuck and I still lift 6 times a week

if its important to you then you'll stick with it
or be a faggot the rest of your life

When you're back you won't even notice you had a surgery, you'll be better than before, just hold out bro.

>>36603293
Make it constant minor injuries and nagging pains one after the other and you have me. Every workout is paired with the fear I'm gonna snap something up.
>>
The way I fixed this problem was to home gym and cut the time spent on each workout. 40-45 minutes 7 days instead of 90 minutes 3-4 days.
>>
>>36599282
That's the trap he's been in for the last 3 years

Now its just hardcore depression. I havent lifted since 2013

Same here family, used to hit the gym morning and evening until it finally hit me that I don't really need to, all I needed was to watch what I eat.

Also I got a gf that told me she wanted me to be with her more than look good for her.
>>
>>36599264
You might be overtraining when you train, OP. Loss of motivation is a real result of that, along with depression, atrophy, etc.

Just don't do it. Its as simple as that. What motivates a man? Don't think about it. If you saw a man beating up a child in the street, you would intervene because the injustice would force your soul to. Even the most timid, cowardly man would be forced to act to stop it. You wouldn't not be able to. Being the kind of person who cannot ignore injustice is what virtue means, and so being /fit/ means becoming the man who's body cannot help but exert itself. After that initial slog when you get your noob gains back, you'll get antsy if you don't exercise. Don't turn your nose at the injustice you're doing your body and be idol.
