OP didn't buy a product. He rented a product. The transference of his rental to a new gym - so long as the value is equitable - seems at least partially understandable to me.
The obvious path is to survey the new gym and see if the facilities are to his liking. If they aren't, I believe he should cancel his membership. If they are, I don't really see the harm in what's been done.
That being said, it's a bit unusual to 'transfer' a membership.

Check it out. I've heard some still have squat racks/power racks/ etc. However, I think they only carry dumbbells up to 50 or so and there is a rule against dropping weights (which honestly you shouldn't have to do that often unless you are a fucking olympic weightlifter).

A membership fee generally implies a length of contract. I would say a year minimum. Probably 2, as many gyms require you to stay for 2 years before you can leave without penalty.
As such there is a long term contract that the gym must adhere to, or they must refund the money paid them. Not the monthly cost, but the membership fee, and if applicable any equipment fees.
