Fad diets work for short-term weight loss. They're fads because they're gimmicky and unhealthy and quickly get replaced by new, equally stupid fad diets.

>The Director of Yale University's Center for Eating and Weight Disorders explains the miracle formula used by diet books to become bestsellers for over a century now: "easy, rapid weight loss; the opportunity to eat your favorite foods and some scientific 'breakthrough' that usually doesn't exist."[95] The rapid loss of initial water weight seen particularly on low carb diets has an additional sales benefit. By the time people gain back the weight, they may have already told all their friends to buy the book, and the cycle continues. This has been used to explain why low carb diets have been such "cash cows" for publishers over the last 140 years.[96] As one weight loss expert notes, "Rapid water loss is the $33-billion diet gimmick."[97]

And traditional diets have short term losses too, or flat out don't work at all. The problem isn't the specific diet but the mentality of long term "dieting". People aren't ready for the long term change required so they're going to fail in the long term.

Low carb diets work because for the most part our ancestors ate fairly low carbohydrate diets(there were exceptions of course). Keto isn't a new and crazy idea, plenty of cultures were practicing keto before it was ever formalized into a diet. People ate eggs and fatty cuts of meat in abundance before keto. They didn't have access to the super concentrated carb heavy foods we have today. It's not some crazy new idea, the idea that starch was fattening was a bit of fairly common knowledge 70 years ago.

>Keto isn't a new and crazy idea, plenty of cultures were practicing keto before it was ever formalized into a diet.

Name one. Even the inuit don't live in ketosis.

>They didn't have access to the super concentrated carb heavy foods we have today.

fad diet or not, it's working for me, i dont see it as a diet but as a way to "quickstart" a new lifestyle of healthy eating

I'm probably gonna do this for 10 weeks or so and then just eat healthy at a 500 cal deficit.

to be honest i probably would've failed had i just started with the 500 deficit first.

>>36563374
protein sparing modified fast

it's an extreme diet for obese people to lose as much weight as quickly as possible. you pretty much only eat protein to try and retain muscle. something like that
>>
>>36561451

You're a fucking idiot. Your body stores excess consumption as fat regardless of source. Keto, atkins or whatever you want to call your low carb diet DOES help lose weight in the short term, because it lowers water retention, but it doesn't burn fat in the long term any better.
>>
>>36563374
Protein-Sparing Modified Fast

basically intermitting fasting in where you eat your daily goal of protons.

I eat between 5 and 7pm everyday, as an example today i ate 550g of chicken, 1 can of tuna in water, and a cup of broccoli, around 1k calories, 160g protons, less than 15g carbs.

the idea is to eat as little as possible while hitting your protein goal to minimize muscle loss since you're eating very little calories a day.
>>
>>36563445

High carbohydrate foods promote the production of insulin which causes fat storage. If you continuously eat high carbohydrate foods your body will have high insulin levels for long periods after you eat.

If you have high insulin levels, your body will not burn fat for fuel but will in turn burn the remaining glucose in bloodstream, then tell you "hey asshole its time to eat " before it ever taps into your fat. Insulin is the key here, it's responsible for most of the fat storage. If you eat a diet high in fat you will have even levels of blood sugar and your insulin levels will be low, thus allowing your body to easily tap into your fat.

that's some class A bro science. Do you have literature to back these statement, friend?
>>
>>36563496

>If you have high insulin levels, your body will not burn fat for fuel but will in turn burn the remaining glucose in bloodstream

You mean it burns glycogen, but similar concept. It's basically an intermediate storage for sugars, the resting level of which is greatly lowered in a low carb diet.

But what you seem to be missing here is that your body cannot manifest energy from nowhere. When a person burns glycogen instead of fat directly, this must be replenished, and it will do so with gluconeogenesis using fat as fuel if you don't eat your TDEE.

>then tell you "hey asshole its time to eat " before it ever taps into your fat.

So you don't fucking eat, problem solved.

>How do you know somthing like that? Did you collect urine samples from inuit's from 200 years ago?

Scientists have studied it.

http://www.jbc.org/content/80/2/461

"It may be said at once that the Eskimo on his usual [diet] shows no ketosis and has high tolerance to ingested glucose. On fasting he develops a ketosis, but only of mild degree compared to that observed with other human subjects"
"the metabolism of the foodstuffs contained in the Eskimo [diet] would not be expected to cause ketosis, because the calculated antiketogenic effects of the large protein ingestion was somewhat more than enough to offset the ketogenic effect of fat plus protein"

Inuit are also known to have larger livers than other people, probably to aid in glucose synthesis.

>Try comparing bread from 100 years ago to bread today.

Okay, here's the nutrition data of kamut, an old wheat strand once consumed as the staple food of ancient Egypt.

http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/cereal-grains-and-pasta/10353/2

27g protein, 131g carbohydrate. This made up so much of the Egyptian diet that it's thought that the working class of Egypt were widely vegetarian.
>>
>>36563582

>Being hungry all the time isn't a fucking solution to most people.

We became modern humans BECAUSE we started to eat meat around 2 million years ago and we're pretty good at digesting all the parts of the animal. People would have a hard time living on the diet of "humans" 25 million years ago.

Take out the hummus, because that has those xenestrogens in it.

Also, add kiwifruit. The vitamin C in the oranges and kiwifruit will boost your testosterone.

On another note, if any of you don't know what to eat your protein powder with, I suggest low fat plain yoghurt. It becomes a mousse. I have chocolate protein powder, and I fucking love my chocolate protein mousse after hitting the gym. There's extra protein in the yoghurt, and it will improve your gut bacteria, too.

"overweight men were randomly assigned"
Are you retarded? You can't apply this to /fit/ when one must presume the /fit/izen has been lifting a minimum number of years and therefore is not an overweight man that has never lifted before.
They gained muscle and loss fat because they were newbies, much like doing babbys first cycle; simmilar response.

Keto is a shite diet except for good blood lipids, eventually you become insulin resistant.
The best diets, shown in resistance athletes, are high carb ones. You need to train right.
Best diet on gear? High carb (but you'll look a watery mess, been there and that was 7 years into lifting that I started)

Jesus you need to learn to intrept studies, I know I have a degree in Biology but is it really beyond logic to realize that this doesn't apply to someone who already lifts and only to a pilot population?
We don't know what the difference is in long term trained atheletes. Since when is 25% low fat, too? Low fat for me is 10g of fat and just fish oil and whatever little else is in my carb based foods, with 500g carbs and 300g of protein. Works wonders on and off gear.

Don't forget epigenetics.

Don't forget the participants were overweight, ergo insulin related problems, probably some receptor polymorphisms therefore (by the power of environment-gene interactions) keto suites them better and it is fucking true everyone responds differently.

It's a poor study example to include here. I personally respond best to cyclic diets blood glucose wise and body composition wise, e.g. UD 2.0 worked a fucking charm for me natty and that came at a net weekly deficit of -500 and I was recomping really well, ended up at 8% bodyfat. My HBA1C was 4.5%

But on a high fat diet eventually my blood glucose fasted rose to a nasty 7.0nmol
On a overly high carb diet it was a nasty 7.2
On gear (high test - 1g) it was 10.1 and I had to use slin and cut test down
On tren it was 4.5.

It depends on the person.
