To lose body fat % you need to lose fat while retaining muscle. The best way to lose weight is be in a deficit. The best way to retain muscle le eat clean & train dirty may may. Cardio doesn't help you to get lean. Cardio isn't even that good at improving cardio. The best way to get good at cardio is by lifting & dieting, to make yourself weigh less so the cardio involves less work.

Why would you have to retain muscles? Body fat would go down regardless, wouldn't it?

Assuming 5x workout in the week: what would be the problem with 3x normal workout(muscles) and 2x just running/whatever to lose body fat.

I won't go as far as the earlier poster and say that cardio is worthless but its not the be all end all people think it is for weight (fat!) loss. Working out 3x a week and running is fine.

The reason you want to maintain as much muscle as possible during weight loss is due to several reasons but for most people it boils down to 2....
1) Muscle is more metabolically active, meaning it requires more calories to sustain, that means the more muscle you have the higher your energy output is, meaning you can eat higher calories and still be losing weight.

An example of this is I have a friend who is pretty fat (and all fat, little muscle), he struggles losing weight at 1700 calories. I have another friend who is a bit overweight, but much more muscular he cuts using 2200-2300 calories, so he can eat more yet still lose weight.

2) When your naked (or shirtless, or pantless, whatever), fat looks like shit. Muscle looks good. If you want an average 'meh' then you can be a skinnyfat like most guys (IE: you look normal with cloths on, but soon as you take it off your soft and doughy) or you can look good. Muscle is what makes you look good. And I don't mean getting Roid-Huge I am just talking having above average muscle mass and a lean physique will make you look shitloads better then an "average" skinnyfat guy (lowish body fat, but also low muscle mass)
