It's very hard. That's one of the main reasons I personally stopped doing Texas Method. Ideally you should shoot for a number on ID that will let you get 5 clean reps. Not perfect, but not complete breakdown to the point where you are severely rounded.

A bit of form breakdown at some point is pretty well inevitable on a program with weekly maxing. What you could do is instead of doing 1x5, you could use the same weight or slightly less to do 2x3, and increase it that way. You are still getting the work in by doing that, but you aren't compromising yourself as much. As long as the weight is going up each week you are making progress.

For VD I liked to do some lighter deadlifts, or another deadlift variation. Romanian deadlifts are great because they can teach hip hinge. It all depends what you can recover from. If you keep the percentage of your max low enough on VD, your ID shouldn't suffer. Just remember that Texas Method is a template. You can play with the sets x reps as long as you follow the guidelines.

just getting back into lifting after a 4 month break here I had no access to weights. My strength has gone down a lot, but I'm not too worried. I'm concerned with how strong I'll be 5 years from now, not next month.

I'm doing a basic upper/ lower split with four days per week. Outside of meet prep, any reason to not just go with a basic DUP style 'do what I want/some for a few' attitude? Using rpe isn't new to me, but I've never gone off the rails and not followed fairly specific programs.

Also, on off days. Any reason why I can't go push an empty bar around to get some blood flowing and practise technique a bit?

If DB bench allows him more ROM, it might help. Same with narrower grip benching (I think he already does CGBP?).
Tho admittedly research hasn't found evidence for larger ROM to give more gains for "trained" lifters, only for novices, the cut-off point is to the best of my knowledge not established.
