It all makes sense now
>>
>>36507739

on the day with the personal trainer he said he prefers to use the weights, and not the machines, then proceeded to only show me how to use machines, so thats what I've been doing.

>>
>>36508063
Not him but I used machines for a few months ages ago and gave up after not making much progress.

Got my motivation back a while later and started using free weights. It's much better and you can feel the difference immediately.

I can't say exactly what makes it so much better, but the machines are so stable and rigid, so you can only move in certain ways.

In comparison, free weights are, er, free-er. You have to compensate for gravity and lack of stability that the machines previously provided. Plus you have a much bigger range of motion so your muscles get hit much more.
>>
>>36507885
this made me laugh. my friend can't deadlift the bar without rounding his back, but he has only been to the gym twice and is skelly
>>
>>36508063
lol

Why would you not? Does it intimidate you?
>>
>>36508205

interesting. i thoguht the machines would be the better choice because they'd allow for me to keep correct form.

i might pay for an hour of personal trainer-ing. my biggest concern is that none of the free weights areas seem to be open. like ever. but id much rather wait in line and feel anxious having meat heads watch me than spend 5 years trapped in the DYEL mode.

im sure ill be a lot less anxious after someone actually shows me what to do too.

>>36508222

>why would you not?

the question was why, as in why would it be better. without actually telling me what one offers over the other, i could just say 'why not?' to using machines over free weights.

>does it intimidate you

only in the sense that i dont know what id be doing. the machines i jumped on cuz the PT showed me how to use em. he refused to show me the free weights cuz they were (and almost always are) being used by everyone.
>>
>>36508240
They target stabilizers, and allow you to lift more weight, doesnt force you into a specific range of motion and allows for more exercises. Thats a basically it.
>>
>>36508255

that makes sense. i figured the machines were better cuz they kept form, but i never really though about how they might be limiting me. im going to try and switch my routine.
>>
>>36508266
>i figured the machines were better cuz they kept form

Thats right, they keep the form for you. They only let you push with prime movers. If you train like that you will be helpless the second you dont have something to hold your form in place, sure, your chest or whatever might be strong enough but whats going to hold everything in place when the machine is gone?
>>
>>36508292

idk man sounds like you're wording that a little dramatically. just cuz i use muse doesn't mean i cant code.

either way id like to switch to free weights. im okay with the progress ive made the last 3 months, but if switching will up my progress, im all for it. no harm in trying. worst case scenario ai bruise my ego a bit
>>
>>36508307

i never said it would be tit for tat, just that you're being dramatic. i have used free weights before. yes its more difficult, and i suppose that means it'd be better for me in the end.

I am agreeing with you, you just made it sound really retarded.

It is far less efficient at targeting the muscle groups involved in a traditional pullup at the cost of your shoulder joints. But enjoy your "functional" strength.

I cannot fucking progress on my bench to save my life. I've been plateued at 150 for the past 1.5 month.

Could it be because I don't isolate my biceps? I never liked the curlbro aesthetic. What do I do to break this plateu /fit/ ;____;

>tfw when you spend every minute of you life locked in a room stuck in bed. All you have is your phone you browse a fitness forum to cope and see what it's like to be normal. One day you call for your mother and tell her you want to go to the gym. She carries you over. You're laying on the ground and manage with all your might to deadlift the 45 pound bar off the ground.

Because samefag.

I am that guy, I was just seeing if someone would come to correct me or throw something in. I wanted to see if it would spawn a conversation, it didn't.

That is where it started, that is where it ended. I feel no desire to sit here and have a conversation with myself for consistency sake.

I don't think I am doing anything wrong. My genetics aren't the best. I'm making progress, slow progress, but that's better than nothing.
>>
>>36513345
As long as you're steadily progressing, you're not doing it wrong anon.

It took me about two months of dedicated training towards being able to do a pullup, just work on your negatives and doing it slow and controlled.

Keep doing what you're doing brah.

>>

>>
>>36513439
Chinups are slightly easier usually, but you're seriously neglecting your back if the difference is that massive. Really work on your negatives and rows, and you'll get one out in a month or so I'd say.
>>
Don't worry, friends! As long as you're eating enough and keeping good form, you'll get stronger. Don't go overboard on reps, either
>>
>tfw skipped squats for first ~9 months of gym due to mobility (I wanted to do squats, but I didn't wanna be the guy who doesn't go below parallel)

a-at least my DL is okay...
>>
>>36508240
Free weights are the bomb man. Check out some youtube videos on form, and get at it. You will progress much faster. Ask some guys if your unsure, I've never actually seen someone get mad about being asked for information. Just don't ask while they are mid set, and don't bombard the guy with questions. Just ask "does this look right?"
>>
>>36513609
its all good anon, as long as you keep doing working on squats it wont matter in another 9 months
