We talked about the possibility of football players doing a shorter cycle a few weeks after play has ended. Possibly off-season strongmen/highland games guys and maybe, maybe gymnastics.
Our conclusion was basically that you could do it for a few different athletes, it just wouldn't really be as good as other methods.
Most sports are about power and impulse and Sheiko doesn't really train that much at all.

I've been thinking about shoulder and elbow positioning a lot recently on the squat.

I feel like I need to keep my elbows way way back to keep the bar weight on my shoulders and avoid hurting my elbows and wrists. I know the conventional wisdom is that you should force your elbows down to keep your back upright, but when I try to do that I end up taking more weight through my hands and it aggravates my minor elbow tendinitis.

I like my elbows way back position but I figure it must be wrong somehow because almost no international level lifters really do it (exception for alexey kuzmin who's arm position looks almost exactly like mine)

So how do I into elbows-down? Is it worth it? What do you do?

Methinks you may not be setting up correctly. Squeeze your scapulae together, then shrug your shoulders up. You should be able to do this with your elbows at your sides instead of back. Then place the bar on your back and see how it feels. At this point you should be able to move your elbows freely, so find a comfortable position and stick with it.

For stretches: some kind of (standing) hamstring stretch, a lunging hip flexor stretch, and a pec stretch are the biggies. For pec stretches, make sure it's your pecs and not just your shoulders that you're pulling on, for hip flexors, keep an upright, inline torso and push with your ass. Can't go wrong hitting glutes/piriformis and adductors as far as rolling goes.
