Because I had pain and leakage
Had one of these Junior year. Was working out with my friends three days a week. On the third day of the week I was doing situps, sat up and there was a big brown/red stain on the mat. Turned out my cyst burst. Didn't hurt at all but the blood and sweat covered my entire shirt that was tucked in my shorts.
I went home, slept, woke up and it was still a little bloody. My mom thought I had been ass-raped and wasn't telling anyone. After getting it cut open and drained, I was given gauze and told to fill it up everyday and then take the gauze out in the shower.

Thank God I finally had it taken care of before the cyst pressed up against my colon. According to my doctor, when that happens shitting becomes painful, and the removal becomes complicated (read: risk of needing a colostomy bag for a few weeks or months).
Getting mine removed and the subsequent recovery was the single most prolonged, humiliating experience in my life, but totally worth it. Had to change out the surgical wound's dressing twice per day, couldn't do much more than shamble slowly around, and shitting was a fucking adventure, but worth it.

Since September 2012, I've had 7 cysts and 1 abscess. After the third lanced cyst, which was free (Canadian healthcare god bless), the doctor considered but ultimately decided against the excision surgery as the wait was too long (Canadian healthcare god bless).
Roughly every six months (September, March) I'd feel the slight twinge of pain. The first cyst popped in my sleep. It was an almost instant relief from what was an unending torment. The next few were either lanced by some shitty nurse, or popped by yours truly on the back of the toilet seat.
So finally I get the abscess April 2015, which filled a sinus of about a 4inch deep by 2.5 square inch cone. Held close to half a litre of the most putrid puss. Immediate booking for the excision.
Surgery was in September (surgeon showed me the whole sinus, it was a gross fucking mess) and by Christmas I was healed and good to go, with a warning that the surgery doesn't always fix the issue. I work as a cook so I'm wearing gross baggy pants and collecting booty sweat 12 hours a day 6 days a week, constant fearing that I'm gonna run my finger along my tailbone and feel that pain again.
TL;DR: pilonidal cysts/abcesses will make you question why God is a cruel and malevolent being so wash your butt daily. Also women get it too I once heard a chick scream and cry for an hour cause she wasn't cleaning properly and the excision got infected worse.

i've had one for the past 3 or 4 years, started out with localized pain from poor posture when sitting and minor pus discharge but would usually lessen for a time. keeping it clean was always hard cause my job was outdoors and i was always active. i would fold up some toilet paper and stick it in my crack to absorb any moisture and change it at lunch time and when i got home. eventually i got a new job and it hasn't given me any pain or pus in over a year.
