Use a lightweight pomade. Water based is more practical since it washes out and doesn't leave grease on your pillows. I like American crew fiber, since I'm not a fan of having shiny hair. The old spice stuff is legitimately good for the price as well.
Apply pomade to damp hair, comb into something that looks like that. If it's water based, then allow it to dry and harden a bit first so you can break it up in the next step. Then run your fingers through it to get the "messy" look.

It's a good haircut, but it's on it's way out. It had a pretty big two year colossal amount of popularity. And people will probably still have it for another year or two. I think slightly longer on the sides and messy is coming back in or just buzzed and shaved in general.
The man bun is definitely out of it's 15 minutes but you'll see guys have it for awhile I imagine.
Look at Chris Evans as Cap, Henry Cavill as Supes/Clark Kent and Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne. Very classic masculine haircuts. That style is coming back in now way more, long and neat or longer with a bit of mess/natural curl/wavyness if you have it.
