Long shot, are there any /fit/izens living in Geneva, Switzerland? I just moved here and I'm looking for a gym. If anyone could recommend a proper place with the basic freeweight equipment that would be great.

Also general find a gym/gymbro thread for anyone looking.

Swissbro from Vaud here. I can't recommend a gym and I work out at home, but all you need is very basic and can be found almost anywhere I think.

What's your exact goal?

I'm guessing strength. So all you need is the basic barbell material:

>barbell
>weights
>squat rack
>power cage

And that's honestly all.

In the next post, tutorials.

Here's what some anon recommended to me for a home gym. I've now decided I would do it another way, for cheaper, but if you have the money, here's what anon said to get:
----------------------------------------------
"https://www.strengthshop.ch/

Get the bastard bar

https://www.strengthshop.ch/bars-hantelstangen/olympische-bastard-langhantel-20-kg-mit-zentraler-randelung.html

Power Rack

https://www.strengthshop.ch/strength-equipment-sport-kraftgeraete/power-racks/power-rack-cage.html

A pair of cast iron 20's, 15's, 10's, 5's, 2.5's and 1.25's (1s, 0.5s and 0.25s if you want to make meaningful OHP progress).

That's a pretty damn good start for a home gym. If there's one thing you should NOT save money on, it's a barbell. Go cheaper on the rack and weights if you want, but DO NOT get a cheap barbell. They suck dick and you will end up wanting a better one. The one I linked is a very good barbell for the price."
-------------------------------

Basically, especially in Geneva, you're better off buying your own gym than membership. It'll be cheaper in the long run.

I personally recommend doing SS and adapt to your liking.

As long as you use the same principles, you'll do fine.

OP, how new are you to working out? If you're fairly new, this guide will help. Read the sticky too but I find this guide better.

Hey man, thanks. I know that I need, just looking for a cheap place that has it in Geneva. Is that the standard in Switzerland? I saw some pics from uni gym and I don't think I saw a single squat rack there, ideally I'd have power cages and some platforms too.
>>
>>36442450
I'm intermediate by most standards, or used to be before I took like a 6 months break due to move and all that shit. Looking to get back into a proper PL routine.
>>
>>36442468
I don't live in Switzerland but I've found that some of the best gyms aren't the most advertised. The most advertised will be those chain gyms with stupid machines and no squat racks. Ask around maybe, hunt out those lesser known gyms that will inevitably be there.

>for a cheap place that has it in Geneva.

As a Swiss citizen, I can tell you those two words don't go together.

>cheap
>Geneva

Look around for various gyms. What you really need is not very expensive. The most expensive gyms here aren't necessarily very good, but they look fancy and have tons of machines, none of which you need.

Don't hesitate to go out of Geneva, if you have time, towards the West, and maybe even try smaller towns' gyms. In my town, there are 3 gyms I think: one is super expensive, one is way more modest, but the price is cut in more than half, if not more.

All you need is the barbell stuff.
>>
>>36442468

Swiss bro again here. One thing I saw, to my horror, was a crossfit gym right in front of my work, but they do have barbell equipment. If it's possible to just go there to use the BB stuff only, then think about that too. I don't know the prices.

Personally, if you know you're gonna do it for the long run, invest in a home gym. It'll save you the time, and if you're in Geneva, and must use the car, you WILL spend your life in traffic. All the time spent going to the gym is time you don't spend working out. It adds up enormously.

Danskjävel.
Seriously thoug, good luck fibdibg a gymbro. It really helps with motivation.
>>
OP, I've done some research for Geneva gyms: verdict: fuck it to hell.

The cheapest I found was over a 1000 Swiss bucks... for that money, for a year, you can buy a whole home gym with everything you need and you can have it forever.

Seriously, the stuff I listed will cost you about the same, but you get a massive home gym: cage, BB, weights, etc, and none of the trouble of going to the gym.

You can even buy the weights in France to get it cheaper.

That's what I feared. Home gym is out of the question, I can hear my neighbors walking upstairs, no way can I get into dropping 150+kg deadlifts on the floor and not get kicked out.

Friend, you must not drop your barbell, ever. Rippetoe says it's for pussies, and he's right. You need to put it on the floor, with perfect control. That requires more strength, but if it's too heavy to be put down slowly, then it's too heavy for you, simply.

I live in an apartment, I can hear my neighbours fucking, but I am silent as a ninja in my work out. Don't drop anything.

It's good form, and if that's the only problem, then welcome your home gym!
