Low weight and high reps or heavy weight and low reps. What are the advantages and disadvantages of both?
High weight low reps. No reason for low weight
>>36323939
I thought low weight, high reps was the way to go for hypertrophy?
>There is nothing impossible to him who will try.
If I were not swole I would be OP.
>>36323960
I feel this way too, I have been doing 5x5 for 3 months and I feel my progress could have been much faster had I been doing something like 10x5
>>36323960
>>36323960
If your on steroids yes. Natty - stick to high weight low reps, build a strong dense body not soft muscles that only look good with a pump. Although idk maybe high reps low weight for acessory shit. Dont go high reps low weight for compounds
>>36323972
you have been lifting for 3 months, what were you expecting exactly?
>>36323984
I'm sorry larry senpai, I'll fix my lifts immediately.
>>36323988
Not op, but what about just doing 5x5 with high rep on secondary lifts? I have 2hours to work out, and I remember SL 5x5 having so many more exercises, like planks, pullups etc. Is it detrimental to do extra lifts? Lots of "experts" say follow the program.
>>36323960
It doesn't matter. Just go with whatever you have more fun with. Just make sure to always go to failure or leave no more than 1 or 2 reps in the tank. But you lift like heavy, lift light for once a week and vice-versa, don't neglect one for the other.
The advantages of heavy weight is that you learn how to lift heavier and you increase your strength without necessarily increasing your muscle mass, although you also increase your mass by lifting heavy. Light weights increase your glycogen storage, which is the fuel tank by which you manage to lift for longer (i.e. endurance). Both have been shown to increase muscle hypertrophy to the same extent (if taken to failure), so do whatever you like best.

my body isnt shit and has always responded well so I dunno, I thought it would have been faster
I've been thinking about doing high reps for a while merely because I dont really feel a burn on any body part when I do low reps, but when I do high reps I can feel em burn like mad, I somehow feel that they are more effective. Am I wrong, senpai?
>>36323972
You mean 10 reps for 5, or 5 reps for 10?
>>36324011
I mean in my opinion as a natural lifter to look good your priority should be getting stronger and keeping low bf. If you do you heavy sets first then id say you can do whatever you want after
Combination of both - high weight on the compounds and high reps on the isolation movements.
For the most part it doesn't matter if you're lifting a weight that is high enough to tire out your body, if not you're doing cardio.
What really matters is total volume which is
>weight*reps*sets=volume
The only reason to do 3-4 sets of 8-12 rather than 3x5 or 5x5 is to potentially get more volume out of it. I prefer 5x5, with maybe an additional set if I feel like it or so, because I can get proper form on each lift because I have adequate rest times and low reps per set, which makes me feel like I can go heavier, but if I were doing 4x12 I could go lower and get equal or greater volume out of it.
It really comes down to preference. As long as you aren't doing something to injure yourself and you're pushing yourself hard you'll make progress. Anything else is broscience.

10 reps for 5

Its hard to say without knowing what your current body is and your past experiences. But building muscle is a slow progress for normal people if you are not feeling that you have worked out much and dont need to rest between reps then increase the weight.
What are your stats for the last 3 weeks on the bench?
High/low reps with an appropriately heavy weight. How is this not obvious?
>>36324096
I don't bench, I do press
It's 45-48 kg for 5x5, it's a slow weight to rise
didnt read the whole thread but here
Heavy pros
-can get more strength gains
-moar weight so you have more fun and feel badass
-not as exhausting (maybe)
Light pros
-less risk of injury (inb4 use proper form, injuries can still happen with perfect technique)
-it makes it a lot easier to accumulate more volume, and more volume = more gainz
the cons of each are pretty much the vicee versa of what I wrote above
>>36323972
>>36323960
I did 3 sets of low reps (4 to 6) for months and I gained lots strenght, didnt get swole tho.
>>36323925
tailor your reps/sets to the workout youre doing and the goals you want to achieve. i try to mix in BOTH in every session at the gym although the ratio usually favors a majority of low weight/high rep... some workouts i will only do low weight/high rep like on back/bi day when im not deadlifting or doing something heavy for back

Do both... Hit high weight low reps for strength and on another day do lower weight but higher reps for size
