So I just finished reading pic related.

In my opinion anyone that lifts should read that book. It's so good and it teaches you so many things. I do agree that SS routine is a bit shitty, people tend to forget it's a routine for people who've literally never picked up weight in their lives. Most of us either Started lifting in high school for sports or dicked around in the gym for months before getting serious, and yes SS is not for these people

Anyways I think people should stop saying SS is a meme. You just don't understand what it's for. The book is definitely not a meme and if you don't read it you're retarded.

Also did I mention the endless shit talking on the machines in the book? Ripptoe is pretty based

I've never done SS in my life faggot, I'm saying the book is good.

What do you think it's 200 pages of one routine you just know?
>>
>>36315488
>I do agree that SS routine is a bit shitty, people tend to forget it's a routine for people who've literally never picked up weight in their lives.

Whoa, get out of here with your reasonable assessment of a very basic novice program.

>>36315576
5/3/1 or Juggernaut would be better choices.
>>
As someone who ACTUALLY ran SS as detailed in the book, with chinups and dips added, I can't think of anything different I'd have a novice lifter do. I eventually ended up subbing front squats for the Wed squats, but even that isn't much of a change - eventually you're supposed to do a light squat day on Wed anyway. I read the fucking book, I am the 1%.
>>
What is wrong with starting strength?
I'm basing my routine off it
>>
>>36315687
When/where/how did you add the dips and chins?
>>
>>36316148
Dips on OHP day, chins on BP day. (Then more dips on BP day and more chins on OHP day tbqh).
>>
>>36316082
You don't "base" your routine off of SS, you do the program.
>>
>>36315488
Low bar squats are shit, everyone who suggests to do it for beginner or noncompetitive should die from testicular cancer, so GTFO with your fat mediocre powerlifter

Most people criticizing it think SS means GOMAD.
They badmouth SS saying it's for noobs>>>>the title has the word "basic" in it.
Say there's nothing for upper body>>>>bench, OHP, and a full chapter dedicated to assistance exercises, including dips, extensions, pullups, chinups.
Goes to show how much they know. They just pick up on a trend a flap their mouth about stuff they don't know being "a meme", wether it's SS, brosplit, or nutrition.
My favorite: "I'm 6foot190lbs been lifting two years, I could take down [insert professional fighter]"
>>
>>36317755
>Most people criticizing it think SS means GOMAD
stupid low bar squats
low volume
squats too often
no single-leg exercises
stupid powercleans, useless/danger for beginners
no horizontal pulls (like barbell rows)

That's what most of the beginner 5x5 programs have (barbell rows instead of power cleans). In fact SL5x5 and SS have the same exercises except for that difference (and the 5x5 vs 3x5).
>>
>>36315687

I had the same experience with SS. In 3.5 months of the program, I went from completely untrained to squatting 365lbs for reps and benching 225lbs. I know my progress is higher than others on /fit/ post, but it makes me wonder how hard they pushed themselves.
>>
Ye, it's good....for 3 months. After that you should add more volume.

Rippetoe is an ass though. Claiming that it's possible to achieve 31lbs of LBM gain in 11 weeks using his program.
>>
>>36319269
No

Do both.
>>

when you are a beginner, and you bullshit really hard, all the people who actually know what they're taking about are very aware that you're lying and it's really cringy

That's a lot of hip dominant exercises, I hope you have some actual back exercises, like rows/pull-ups, to balance out the big ass you're gonna get.

Oh lol, if I wanted to do assistance that way I will better do good mornings with 30s pause at the bottom. Barbell rows are not deadlift assistance same way as dumbbell bicep curles are not dumbbell overhead press assistance just because of overlap of some exercise phases.

>>
>>36319825

>le harder you push the stronger you get

People who give up on linear progression the moment it actually becomes a grind are who I'm referring to. Those who get up to 225lbs Squats and say they aren't a novice any more either:

>have shit form
>never deload
>never incorporated a light day
>didn't eat/sleep more
>just couldnt hack it

If you don't get a 300lbs Squat as a man on SS, you are a bitch. Period.
>>
>>36319856
No, low bar squats don't develop the hamstrings well.
They're still mainly a quads, glutes and adductors exercise.

Any deadlift, but especially SLDLs or RLDs, will develop the hamstrings way better.
>>
>>36315617
Literally no one on this board has read the book. Youre going to get a lot of unbased back lash for no reason. This is a pure bro science board so im not surprised

>>
>>36320103
Dips and pullups are added to the program a few weeks in iirc
>>
>>36320554
SS without accessories could just as well be called Starting Ass.
Squat = ass
DL = ass
PC = ass

bench and press are the only upper body exercises
>>
>>36320580
only chins/pullups are, not dips.
>>36320590
ss has chins though
>>
>>36320554

I would recommend it. I wasn't doing it for a better body, but my body looks the best it ever has. I did SS for about 4.5 months, and now I'm doing the Texas method.

What about power cleans? I don't know if I'd have an incompetent beginner do those.

Greyskull is better IMO.
>>
>>36320590

lol agreed. Did SS.

Also the lowbar squats are even more ass-centric than highbar ones.
>>
>>36320654
theyre fine, if you have trouble with them you can just form check on the ss forums and that solves 99% of the cases
>>
>>36320622
Cool, thanks.
If I may ask also, how long did it take you to see results? Also was it very hard to begin with?
>>
>>36320154
>this is what faggots doing splits actually believe
>>
>>36317612
>every beginner MUST start with the squat variation that requires the most flexibility and develops weightlifting specific strength

Yeah, can't imagine anything going wrong with that.
The point is getting as many people to squat as possible. Most people can't do a proper high bar squat day one.
>>
>>36320257
This retarded shit is exactly why people plateau for way too long on programs they shouldn't be running anymore.
>>
>>36321001

This retarded shit is why people say SS is a meme. It fucking works, and it works well. Blame "muh genetics" for your lack of progression.
>>
>>36320718
I wouldnt say its hard to begin with. If you dont eat or sleep enough, or if you arent recovered for any reason, you might fail on some lifts some days. Thats frustrating but normal. It's also a bit awkward learning the lifts. If you can get ahold of it, read the book. If not, watch forrm videos. But start with the bar for all the lifts. Squats and DLs progress quickly, OHP and BP the progress comes low and slow.

I saw physical changes at about 6 weeks. I felt noticeably stronger after just a month, I was weak as fuck. I had no idea where to start with strength training, so SS was super helpful.
>>
>>36321186
SS is a meme, but it also works.
But if you're not making progress anymore, you shouldn't be running that program.
Anyone who tells you otherwise is fucking stupid.
