Socrates was someone who was made up by Plato. He didn't even exist.

You're thinking of the character of Socrates in Plato's dialogues. I think only the apology is thought to be near enough to a transcription of what he said, although the earlier dialogues like the Euthyphro (and maybe Laches, Lysis and Charmides) are thought to be a close reflection of his ideas. That annoying aspect seems to be more and more noticeable as the dialogues move into Plato's middle and later period though if I remember rightly, it's been a long time though.

I think the consensus (such as it is) is that the Apology is most likely more or less what he really said at the trial; the middle dialogues like Republic, Symposium etc. and the later dialogues like Sophist, Parmenides etc. are probably Plato's ideas and Socrates is only a mouth-piece; and the blurry area is the early dialogues, with I think some seeing the Euthyphro as probably close to a real discussion Socrates had and the same may be true of Charmides, Lysis and Laches. They all seem quite similar to me and pretty different from the other two sets of dialogues. It's all speculative like anything, there's certainly some scholarship arguing about it one way or the other though if you want to develop your own informed opinions.
