What Christian Bale did worked because he had been semi-muscular before, had dieticians and trainers, and used steroids.

He put on 100 pounds in 6 months, and it wasn't all fat. This is not achievable natty, especially if you haven't been muscular before. It's a lot more plausible to lose and gain back quickly than it is to gain the first time.

Additionally, if you're skinnyfat at 140 pounds at your height, you have almost zero lean mass. And you're also not as fat as you think; again, you just have no fucking muscle. You need to lift, first and foremost. You can cut in a year or so.

He had to lose a lot of what he'd added though (he overshot), at his final weight he was about 190 I think. I wouldn't use his methods or expect his exact results, it's more so that I think his physique is reachable naturally.
I'm not OP, and in answer to his question I wouldn't think there's an advantage to reaching very low bf% before you start - if anything the weight might look normal when there's more muscle.
