IIRC he claimed he got a knee injury. He was seeded to take the 105 gold, and then nobody from Russia got gold at all that year.
Had Klokov done what he did at the worlds in Poland, Russia would have had the 105 gold. Instead, a Ukrainian got it.
RuADA almost definitely covered up his positive test, but he had to skip out on the London Olympics (because had he gone, he'd've tested positive in a WADA test and discredited his country) and in that way, pissed off the people in the business of Russian Sport.

Akkaev and Klokov were supposed to take home Gold and Silver in 2012 then a week before competition they dropped out due to mysterious 'Injuries'.
Most likely they were both told they would fail a doping test and chose to pull out. The guy that went onto win lifted about 15kg less than they probably would have totalled. Probably pissed a few off in the camp as Russia has a deep 105 group and other potential medalists missed out because of those two.

He pissed off the entire Russian weightlifting team and management because he and Akkaev fucked up Russia's chances at the medals as the country was depending on them.
Politics are the biggest deal with the olympics, so if you as a small individual fuck your countries' chances at the olympic gold medal - specially a country that takes this as seriously as, let's say, China or Russian - you can expect retaliation.
Now, whether it was drugs or he actually got injured, it's irrelevant to this whole thing (everyone at the olympics is on drugs, so it doesn't matter). In both cases it's just an accident, that happens.
The politics are why weightlifting can be so annoying as a sport sometimes.
I'm sad that he's not gonna be competing anymore (even outside the olympics), because he is still improving and his lifts are getting higher.
