Muscle-up guy here. The people calling them a meme exercise simply can't do them. The muscle up's association with crossfit has also given them a bad name. For a general upper body workout, no movement hits more or works the upper body as a whole more so than a muscle up.

The most I've ever done in a row is 15, they suck to do in that high of a volume, since your hands get ground up on the bar:

Form in the video wasn't the greatest, since I was just going for reps. I usually do sets of 5, and make sure I go all the way down at the bottom of the movement, and lock out my triceps at the top.

Muscle-ups don't have much more of strength requirement than pullups, the barrier from being able to do them is getting an understanding of the movement, and how it differs from a pullup. A muscle up is an arcing motion, where a pullup is strictly vertical. I just spent a few months trying them on days where I did pullups until I eventually got the motion down. At the time I got my first muscle up, I was able to do around 12 strict form pullups.

Calisthenicsfag here, my record is 21 but around 17 i kip a little, never really incorporated them in my training beacause it doesnt fit my split routine, if you want to get better try dips and then negative muscleups and of course pullups, if you can do at least 1 and have a pullup bar at home try doing 1 muscleup throughout the day a lot of times.

Regular dips hurt my joints, but if I do them on a flat bar (like on a smith machine) i can go for a while.

i could do 18 strict chins before i started training muscleups. muscleups have entirely replace chins and pulls in my routine because i find the exercise a lot more enjoyable.

Do negatives as slow as possible. Explode upwards and then go down for 4+ seconds.
Also, always do the hardest pull-up there is for you. 11 chinups means that its time to start adding weight, throw 10-20lbs in that backpack and go for 4-5 reps. Pullups actually become quite easy once your grip gets strong enough to let you rest while hanging
