You see your face flipped one way all the time from the mirror and grow used to it. Seeing it in a photo flips it to how everyone else sees it but weirds you out a bit cause you aren't used to it. Now you notice the little errors in symmetry that you'd never noticed before. It's why everyone looks at it and just goes "nah you look fine that's how you always look" and you're freaked out. Also why in drawing if you flip an image you drew all of a sudden you see more errors.

There is still some distortion in a photo. When you look at an object your brain adds depth to an image. That doesn't happen with a flat photo. Your brain can approximate the dwepth but it's not quite the same. Also, a camera captures light a bit differently than the human eye.
Basically look at how similar your friends look in their photos to how they look in real life. The same applies to you, BUT you are used to your reverse image so it looks weird. There's also the issue of you seeing your face from angles you never see it from and that can freak you out a bit too.

Hold it as far away from you as possible and zoom in for a better focal length.

35 is not closest. Even 50 will distort the face in an unflattering way. For portraiture, 85mm (minimum) is the most accurate. Photophag so I know. Personally I shoot with a 135 f/2 for the most flattering results.
