Do the French even lift? About to move to southern France and worried I won't be able to find a gym and will lose all my gains.

The French don't lift. Too cucked.

You'll find the gyms filled with newly arrived 'French' though. Sure.

My family has a house near Bordeaux, the best you get is smelly lean hippies or Arabs with fatceps.

Toulouse. Arriving as a 100% ignorant American so have no idea what to expect on the gym scene. They have a few crossfire there so absolute worst case ... fuck I can't believe I'm sinking this low.
>>
>>35613617
Crossfire = Crossfit.
>>
>>35613617
Toulouse is alright, some dude from here does videos on YouTube, he is fucking stupid but he sometimes shows where he goes to lift and places are OK. Lots of bike and shit but I don't think it lacks anything.
>>
>>35613617
you could always home gym
>>
That's funny OP, I'm about to move to northern spain. I've lived in Paris though and I can tell you that people will be rude to you unless you learn some french. One french course is enough to prepare you.

France also has some of the lowest levels of English proficiency so be warned. Watch out for non whites.
>>
>>35613764
Wouldn't americans be rude too if I didn't learn english to communicate ? It's easy as that, if you want to live in a country, you learn its language and nobody will bother you
>>
>>35613764
OP here. I studied Spanish in school, so coming in with zero French. Planning on learning as much as I can. Lot of foreigners passing through Toulouse because of Airbus so hopefully there will be easy access to French-as-a-second-language classes.

But for the gym I just need survival phrases to start
>how many sets you have left
>you using that?
And then just enough to hit on the cardio bunnies.
>a-a-are you an archaeologist?

You're OK, man. People in the south east are more likely to lift, but you'll do just fine. Plus Toulouse is a pretty decent city to live in, everything's pink and they have an adorable accent.
>>
>>35612943
dude, no one in southern europe or france lifts

Get ready to faire de la musculation.

Been years since I took french. Can any francocuks confirm if this is correct?
>>
>>35614721
I AM french ... That explains a lot

>>35614742
Faire de la musculation is right, it means going to lift
>>
>>35614805
Does "muscualtion" actually translate to "lifting"? Or is "bodybuilding" a closer translation?
>>
>>35614867
"musculation" is a better translation for lifting
Bodybuilding has a more professional/specialized meaning

Mes excuses
>>
>>35614867

"musculation" derives from "muscler" which is a verb that means "develop muscles".
So musculation is "muscle development".
We don't have a word for "bodybuilding" (we just say "bodybuilding", there aren't nearly as many words in french than there are in english) and it's kind of a sub-genre of musculation, like weightlifting ("haltérophilie").

American here. I married a French girl and am now living in Lille.

For French women, it's fashion>muscles
Any French woman would much rather a dyel that dresses suave as fuck than a sickcunt who wears gym shorts and a t shirt. Don't get me wrong, the love bodies too, but how you look while dressed always comes first.

On another note, you won't find any good barbell guns like the US, it's all shitty machine gyms and cardio machines.
>>
>>35614987
What the fuck is a barbell gun?

People here are facially very aestethic but usually unfit and have bad posture (at least the women, don't really analyse guys in that way). There are quite a lot of gyms here but be prepared to pay big bucks for membership. As a side note it's a good idea to learn at least a little bit o french before your arrival, people don't speak english here.

Lifting is regarded as a narcissistic and superficial activity here. It's more popular in the south but it won't make any difference for you. You'll find gyms anywhere
>>
>>35613331
This is really uninformed. I went to Southern France and old people passed me when I was bicycling. I got passed by 80 year old men. The French are very fit.

I used to live down the street from a recreational gym, with basketball courts and what not. Never walked in since this was before my /fit/ days so I can't tell you if they had weights and stuff. This was roughly 2010

Yeah, if you want to find good barbell gyms in France, look for "force athlétique" clubs (powerlifting).

I can assure you that the gym and fitness culture is nowhere strong. Some rare people actually lift, but most people are skinny and as someone said before, have horrible postures. The style of living is very different in France and I think it's legit to say that trying to achieve muscles is generally considered as a bit barbaric and uncivilized. But for their defense, they dress damn well.

Whereas I also hold personal experience from other European countries too, and in Spain they are manlets who only do bicep curls and bench press, seriously.

In Netherlands people are tall but often lanklets. Bad postures too. They aren't fat, often skinny but not that they'd lift really.

At Finnish and Swedish gyms you see many men who are very well built, wide shoulders and buff looks. I think it comes down to genetics and dem Nordic people have to be resistance for cold so they are more heavy built than people in south. And the entire gym culture is really strong there, you actually see many people lifting decent weights and having some real muscles. Also the women are tall and they have very wide shoulders and strong legs. I'm pretty sure that an average lifting Finnish girl is more wide than an average Spanish dude, not even kidding.
>>
>>35612943
it's hard to find a proper gym with free weights

most places are fruity musculation places with shit tonne of machines and treadmills

most french men don't lift

most french girls like men that lift, probably related to above

French people in general and especially French women are among the slimmest people in Europe. Maybe it's the reason why gyms aren't that popular. Though I'm not even sure that gyms are less popular in France than anywhere else.

Fun fact: France had banned creatine until 2006.
>>
>>35624214
Excuse-moi. Est-ce tu une archéologue ? C'est parce que j'ai un gros os à faire examiner.

But it won't work. Just ask: "Ca te dis de tirer un coup ? Chez moi ou chez toi ?"
