>battle scars
yeah im sure it took a whole lot of struggling to finish that entire turkey
>>
>>35599216
well this is actually almost true.

only 10% of people that undergo lifestyle changes can actually stay at a lower body weight longterm. 90% will go back to their original weight or higher. from a medical point of view lifestyle change as a therapy against obesity is quite inefficient.
>>
>>35600200
how the fuck could that possibly be true
>>
>>35600200
That's because they quit after the easiest step, which is losing the weight.
The hard part comes after, cause you need to keep up the new lifestyle - forever.
>>
>>35600200
Yeah, that's impossible. The more likely conclusion is not that the lifestyle change failed, but that the fatty failed to maintain the lifestyle change.
>>
>>35600322
Which leads to the same thing.
If 90% of the participants fail to lose weight in a study, the conclusion of the study won't be "this way to lose weight is legit and it works, 90% of the people are just too dumb to do it."

Because if something doesn't work for the vast majority, it doesn't work in real life, even if a hypothetical perfect human could do it.

By the way, after several years on /fit/ I've noticed how many threads there are of fatties trying to lose weight and pledging to never fail like all those other fatties, yet you never see a thread of someone who managed to keep the weight off for 2 or 3 years.
>>
>>35599161
HAHAHAHAHA this has to be some troll post. no one is that delusional.
>>
>>35600382
You don't understand.
It does work for the vast majority.
Lemme explain it in terms you understand.
As a doctor, you give your patient a prescription.
Your patient does your prescription and gets results.
Then later, your patient decides to stop taking the prescription and goes back to the way they were.
"HURR DURR THE PRESCRIPTION DOESN'T WORK"
You're an idiot.
>>
>>35600452
I think what he is trying to say, is that if you are fat at an early age, and for a number of years, your TDEE is going to be low. This is because you have permanently fucked up how your body processes food. So you constantly have to eat at a caloric deficit to maintain a healthy weight, and 90% of fatties can't do this.
>>
>>35600488
If you're maintaining then you're not at a deficit, genius.
Your atp energy efficiency can be increased through exercise. It's not that they can't, it's that they choose not to which is ENTIRELY different than 'can not'.
>>
>>35600488
If you lose weight it won't be at deficit anymore , am I wrong ?
>>
>>35600200
But weight is a shit metric. Probably worse than bmi for painting even less of a clear picture. For instance I started at 210, dropped to 170 and now I'm back to 180 and climbing but lean.
>>
>>35600488
Diet culture in america has taught people that you change your diet to lose weight, then you go back to your old pattern of eating.

It is wrong, and people need to stop thinking so. A diet change is a lifetime change.
>>
>>35600508
>>35600572

basically the deficit becomes the maintain, but fatties don't understand this. A normal 5'11 person may have a TDEE of 2200 calories, but if they are a recovering fatty, it will be 1900, or something like that.
>>

Only for psychological reasons, not physical.

If a fatty loses 100 lbs, he won't automatically gain it back if he maintains his diet and exercise. What will actually happen will be the fatty thinks
>alright! I've reached my goal and lost 100 lbs! Now I can treat myself to a bit of junk food and I don't have to go to the gym everyday!
Of course they'll gain the weight back if they fall into old habits.
>>
>>35600790
I have heard it's easier to put on fat if you've been fat before. I think when you get obese your body creates new fat cells, and those don't go away when you lose weight they just get smaller. So a former fatty will gain fat more easily then someone who was never fat, all else being equal. But, I don't think it's a huge difference and certainly not impossible to maintain with a slightly stricter diet.
>>
>>35600790
Here's an idea:
When you decide to lose the fat, calculate the TDEE for your goal weight, and just keep eating that forever.
>>
>>35600669
in adipose people (BMI > 30) it is a good metric.

>>35600452
thats what was said about chemotherapy as well. people stopped taking their medicine and died to the cancer instead. and that was simply because of the severe nausea and vomitting that was induced.

people dont stop taking their therapies because the therapies arent working fast enough, but because of side effects. and beeing hungry all fucking day long for months or years is definetly nothing fun.

so get real and stop the "your mind must be weak" act.
>>
>>35600912
>what is cancer
>>
>>35600960
It is very rare for the body to make new fat cells. While it is possible, unlikely outside the extreme obese.

What does happen is the current fat cells become bigger as you become obese. So even when they are empty and deflated, they remain a larger size, and it is easier for them to store large amounts of fat quickly.

The same is true for muscles, this is why people who were formerly big find it easier to gain mass quickly.
>>
>>35601097

This.
I am so happy me and my sister were always active as kids and teens. Because even when I'm doing sedentary work for long periods of time, I can still regain muscle relatively easy when I go back to working out. Letting kids be obese really does fuck them up for life.

This. I'm having a hard time lean bulking now after cutting for over a year. It's terrible. Especially because I'm incredibly active at work, and it adds another 800-1000 calories to my TDEE.

What I ate today:

>chips
>granola bar
>whole large Casey's pizza
>ranch
>protein shake

I feel awful.
>>
>>35607661
You probably feel awful because you're eating garbage. Bulking doesn't mean you need to eat a whole pizza, chips, and dressing... there's high calorie healthy food. You could try eating a fuckin vegetable for once, maybe a fruit, or a source of polyunsaturated fat.

I see what you're saying. Something tells me everybody is looking at obesity from the wrong angle. I think the difference between fatties and naturally lean people is that the former don't understand that you should only eat when you're physically hungry, while the latter don't know that the fatties don't know this. Any fatty who realizes that they don't need to eat unless their stomach is actually growling (i.e physical hunger) will become thin without issue. The problem is we're all inundated with bullshit nutrition myths from every direction

Almost correct. People who are fat when they're children make more fat cells. So it is harder to stay at a low weight as an adult.

Muscle cells increase the number of nuclei, which synthesize protein, thus it is easier to gain mass back. Of course, the cell itself also increases in size and protein content. With anabolic steroid use, you see a much greater number of new nuclei, which take years to lose, which is why roiding in the off season works so well.

You haven't been here for long then, because I've seen many threads of people who have maintained weight loss. Furthermore, I know several people in real life who lost the weight and kept it off. My mother, a woman, which as we all know puts her at a disadvantage, even lost 80 pounds approximately 12 years ago and never gained back more than 15 pounds, and always lost that again. Now she's up and down by about 15, but she's maintaining a healthy weight.

Actually, interestingly enough, I can tell you're either completely uneducated or a first or second year university student with poor powers of critical thinking who never reads beyond the syllabus.
Reading one study, or several studies, which come to a conclusion is nice. Real science, however, does a few things that go beyond that. First of all, you need to read the discussions in these papers, because nearly every single one of them investigates reasons why their results turned out how they did. Most of these discussions include further investigative questions, paramount among them is precision, accuracy and explanation of the results. When it comes to these particular studies, the question comes back to a couple of things: are these people thermodynamic anomalies, changing what we thought we knew about the human body, or are the experiments flawed because self-reported data is unreliable. Thankfully, further study has consistently pointed out that the second option is true. When fatties were monitored closely, they either continued to lie about their caloric intake and activity level, or they were honest and lost weight. That's the truth in every single case I've seen studied. Science relies on continuing to ask questions, not just blindly accepting something that seems to contradict current knowledge without further investigation.
