i'm 5'9 120lbs. BMI shows i am underweight and i hear people tell me that its obvious that i should bulk but i still have belly fat and weight to my sides as if i were much heavier. Should i just try to get to healthy weight regardless of large amounts of belly fat or should i cut to remove the fat and then lean bulk out of skelly mode?

>>
>>35558738
hey bro, i posted this in a different thread and some guy told me to go ahead and bulk to 140lbs then cut, just a heads up. If anyone can say anything to any of this that would be cool
>>
>>35557920
Reminder that if you aren't in the overweight category you haven't made it.
>>
>>35558339
If you cut then you will lose the fat but also the muscle you have.

If you bulk properly you will gain muscle and lose the fat you have.

Choose yourself.
>>
>>35558804
i will lose fat at a caloric surplus?
>>
>>35558829
Only if you work out
>>
>>35558838
Also its not all just calories in calories out, macros matter a lot and you cant binge carbs / eat carbs when your body has too much already. Eat carbs in the mornings and before working out mostly.

You might think youre really fat right now but once you gain more muscle mass the fat will spread out and make it look like a lot less.
>>
>>35558873
thanks, that makes sense. by 'work out' you mean lifting? i bike 7 miles a day to/from work and i hit my chest or arms or back pretty hard at the gym everyday with no leg work yet because i need to get my knee drained of fluid. If i keep this up while bulking this would be alright?
>>
>>35558939
As long as you put effort into the lifting you will be making gains, also I quess youre too small to do compound exercises so just messing around with the machines is fine. The key is pushing yourself and having more intensity every time.
>>
>>35558953
i'm reading that i should add weight every time i go but every other 3 days i'm back on a muscle group for example i would be adding 5lbs every 6 days meaning i should be gaining 10lbs every single week on bench correct? Thats 40lbs a month?
>>
>>35559093 here
need sleep for work and gains, will be back to check this
>>
>>35558339
Belly fat can trick you. Lack of muscle can make it more visible.

A car looks bigger next to a motorcycle but looks smaller compared to a tractor
>>
>>35559093
Thats all theoretical. In real life there are much more variables like how warmed up you are, how much sleep you got and what and when you ate which all play into how much you can lift.
Like some days I'd hit 100kg for easy 5 reps on the bench but on other days I could barely do 1 rep.

Every time you go to the gym you should be giving it your best or near to the best you can.
Select the weights according to how much you think you can do that day.

Lowest weight 50kg (Dec 2013)
Highest weight 68kg (June 2014)
Same height both times

Cut almost all the way back to original weight after getting up to 20+% bf. Now scared to bulk
>>
>>35561845
You cut yourself back to 18,6? That's almost underweight you skellyboi. What are you doing? You bulked too fast last time, but if you control your calorie intake and your TDEE you can slow bulk so you gan get mass muscle gain without gaining too much fat. You can do this, just be in control of your own numbers bro.

>Cut 57->54 over Christmas holidays (4weeks, uni student)

The reason I was 50kg cause I became slightly eating disorder. Then I panicked and bulked like there was no tomorrow..

Logically I know that if I bulk at +300 then I won't get too fat, but my self esteem is inversely proportional to my bf%.

>Now scared to bulk
Maybe you should make sure your strength is increasing and only cut as long as it isn't affecting your strength, that way you won't lose the muscle you gained during the bulk. Also you might look into Scooby's advice about How to Lose Fat and Gain Muscle at the same time. The other thing is to use exercise to burn off fat rather than dietary restriction, that's my plan.
>>
>>35562018
>my self esteem is inversely proportional to my bf%.
this is my issue as well, I really want to be lean but I think we have to accept it's not healthy with very low muscle mass. Maybe a rule for skeletons should be it's not an option to pursue leanness without having some set level of muscle mass, maybe measured by strength.

Did someone forget his medication today, anon?
>>
>>35562537
The injury hasn't gone, I work around it and I'm building up to visiting a physio to see what it is. It's something with my shoulder, it may have been a pre-existing injury which I never noticed until I added weight to it, but I did a lot of OHPing when I lifted the first time and that might have done it.

I avoid any lifting over the head and try to increase mobility in it but it's quite a serious issue, I have a raised scapula on that side, pain if I move that arm in a wide range of motion at the shoulder joint. I can lift as long as I'm not asking too much of it so I do what I can - deadlifts, shrugs, curls, squats, chin-ups.

It's worth avoiding injury if you have the time and energy to look into muscular balance and making sure you have range-of-motion in the joints and you're not being too imbalanced in which exercises you do. Also, I think if you are injured you lose less muscle if you continue eating enough.
>>

Thanks for the tip. I'll do that. Good luck with the healing progress. I hope it gets better.

anon is right though it is useless. it doesn't account for what type of mass, muscle or fat. that's why pro athletes all register as "obese" according to bmi.

it's pretty much just a fat measurer.
>>
>>35562960
It is useless. It completely ignores the ratio between muscle and fat, and is misguiding to people who have no idea about nutrition or their own bodies. A more advanced model would do so much more.

>>
>>35563107

Do you even math, breh
>>
>>35563107
not sameanon

per wiki
>adipose tissue density: 1.06 g/ml
>lean muscle density: 0.9 g/ml

.9/1.6 = 0.849
so about 15% less dense but ya you're right i for sure thought it was more like 2x.
>>
>>35563217
samefag. oops i think i switched those numbers. lean muscle will be 1.06 as it's more weight per volume.

end result is the same.
>>
>>35563013
Yeah, it's an indicator. If you are very muscular you can estimate your bmi by using common sense

I'm not saying it's the holy grail of health indication, but it does point you in the right direction for such a simple equation

>>35563020
Obviously a more advanced model would give a more precise indication? BMI is limited, but it's not useless

>>35563026
To an extent, yes
>>
Bmi is an accurate assessment in the big picture. If you have an overweight BMI, even at 10% body fat, you have a level of mass that will, unfortunately, reap consequences that will shorten your lifespan.
Carrying a lot of mass regardless of type shortens ones life.
>>
>>35563552
BMI isn't about shortening your life it's about overall risk. Having a lot of muscle won't lead to diabetes, I doubt it leads to heart disease as long as it isn't mass monster size.

A man with a BMI of 25 (overweight) and 15% bf looks healthy. I would be surprised if there were any indications that level of muscle mass was overall unhealthy.

If it shortens your life by 5 or 10 years it's still preferable to have strength and muscle. It seems like anything much under a BMI of 25 makes it look like you haven't filled in your frame.

>>
>>35563924

>>
>>35563876
most normies have normal bf% in the normal range, if your bf is low then a normal bmi will not necessarily make you look normal size - due to density differences you need more muscle to look the same level of "filled out".
>>
>>35563935
it's okay. It doesn't matter where your BMI is now you'll be able to make it to a muscular hunko some day. Unless you do cardio or yoga =(
