I was going to have a hand at snatches, but I was too scared. I also did power cleans, after reading more about properly doing the first pull on the catalyst athletics site (I was pulling with high hips, arms not vertical, I went for vertical arms as it reccomends) and it was ugly. the bar either went straight up or around my knees. So I think I'll work on that some more before posting here. Any tips?

Post your clean/power clean here anyway, odds are there's plenty wrong with it, anon can help you with what you need to work on.

Bar should go pretty much straight upwards, your knees move out of the way, the bar doesn't go around them.

You aren't securing the bar overhead, you're just holding it with your arms. Retract your shoulder blades and internally rotate your arms while pushing up. The weight should be supported by the musculature if your upper back, not your arms.

I'm not worried about my back because somehow, despite never training ankle flexibility, but I can literally touch my ass on the back of my heels and still maintain a vertical back angle.

I was looking at Dan John's neophyte routine while I learn the technique, before progressing onto his Big 21 routine. Are routines appropriate for my skill level and progression? Neophyte routine is as follows:

3 times per week.

No. You need to still do bench press and deadlifts. Also, front squats shouldn't take precedence over back squats. You need to take priority in getting stronger in the low bar back squat.

The baseline fact is for general strength, you need movement categories rather than individual movements (sport demands are a different story, of course). It makes jack shit difference whether you flat bench, dip or floor press compared to the fact you're actually doing some sort of horizontal-ish pressing.

You people are worthless. The reason you should low bar squat is that weight lifters already did front squats. The posterior chain needs some work, front squats are extremely quad dominant and it would die you benefit. also, more lower back.

Deadlifts are important for the EXACT SAME REASON. The are an ESSENTIAL lower back excercise and create a CNS response like no other that will teach you how to pull heavy objects from the floor.

I don't know why I even fucking bother with weightlifting, I deadlifted 235kgs, benched 150 kgs and BS 185 kgs before i quit PL and my records at weightlifting are puny 105/125 (bw around 90kgs for all lifts).


Anyway, just want to share my today video with someone, also tips on technique are welcome. I torn two ligaments on my right foot playing football some two months ago, and recovery is not very fast, so weights are far from my best. Strength is coming back fast, but snatch is really lagging (123 FSx5, I probably should do more than 83x2 snatch and 103 1+2 CJ).

Not sure, I get a sharp, shooting pain in my left knee when I bend my leg at around 90° or so. It's way worse going down than coming up, and I've had it go out from under me during squats before. I'm wearing a Mueller patella tendinitis support band. I ice 20 minutes a day and take nice hot baths.

The seering pain is pretty much gone... But now when I go into bottom position my right knee is weak, and it feels really tight and uncomfortable. I got the injury last week doing front squats. It's been about 7 days now.

If you continue to lift with it, it will definitely turn into patella tendonitis and you will be fucked for 6 months +.

You need to hit the correct positions in the full snatch. Your high pull mostly looks okay but your snatch is very different, you must do the same movement in the snatch.

when i try to stretch my ankles i feel a pain in the area i've circled

Common beginner mistake is cutting extension and just falling gently under the bar.

You must extend fully and actively pull yourself under. Do tall hang cleans with a reasonable weight, same for snatches. Learn the third pull.

Really light weight and I feel like I'd actually do better with some more, but I really want to have good technique before I seriously start to train the classic lifts. I've done 60kg before (still weak as fuck, I know...).

Just FYI, before I was doing the first pull with a more horizontal back (as I thought that was more appropriate..) but after reading a catalyst athletics article linked her I went with vertical arms, more vertical back, seems to be creating some issues around the knees. And FYI, this is pretty much exactly how I set up when I deadlift. I have vertical arms and I get very "squatty". I find this feels more natural, let's me pull the biggest weights and I have less potential for back rounding. The only realy difference is that in a Deadlift I have the bar over the midfoot. In the vid I have the bar over the "balls" of my feet

Thx mate, I usually don't jump back and my cleans usually don't look so weird. I think the new starting position screwed me up.

Would you reccomend that I continue to increase the weights I'm using? I at times find going too light results in technique thwt doesnt look as good as with heavier weights. I dunno. Before at the beginning of each workout I've just been working up to a max single in the power clean. Should I just stick to that approach, or should I just work relatively submax (still for singles) but still heavy enough that it requires some work? Should I just try to use a little bit more weight each workout, and not just go for max?

Also, I guess I should do jerks too (and do clean + Jerk whenever I do cleans?) Realize I obviously train in a commercial gym. So I shouldn't really be dropping weights, nor am I comfortable doing so. But I'll do the oly lifts anyway.

Also, the reason I liked doing singles is because doing triples on power cleans fucking gases me, and next thing I know I'm all sweaty and tired and when I go to squats or anything I'm just done...

What would you reccomend? Just some doubles for snatches and singles for clean and jerk at the beginning of each workout at a moderate weight?

My gym has rubber coated plates and the floors are padded. But people will be like wtf I drop em.

My YMCA does have a weightifting hall and I can join if I pay. I am making excuses sorta, I feel as if I'm too weak to go in. I feel like maybe once I can squat at least 100 kilo maybe I could. I also want to get my own setup for weightlifting but my current house is too small.

Well in my country the highest end gyms are maybe 150 to 200 bucks(they are on par with those 1000 dollar gyms in the USA pretty much) so 50 bucks for gym is a lot in some places.

I sleep fine. 8 hours a night minimum. Usually 9 or 10.

E.g. when I have school I usually go to bed at like 9:00PM and wake up maybe 6:30 AM.

Eating? I eat okay-ish. Issue is probably not enough protein. But I drink a lot of milk, eat egg almost daily, usually have meat at least with dinner.
