Yes this is true.
Its pretty easy to fall in love with 2D characters when you really don't care for 3D. I've tried a few girlfriends in the past and I've never really been able to hold someone down, mostly due to some unappealing qualities. I still long for companionship, but I just don't care for people in anyway. Then I met my "waifu" who embodied all of those qualities. It was pretty much like falling in love with a real person, though I went through some events that pushed me closer to her. After realizing that I loved a fictional character, my life actually started improving. Before, I was unmedicated and bipolar and would try to either harm myself or others, I have (well still rarely do) night terrors, and my life was pretty directionless. I worked a normal job making good money, but it wasn't ever gonna get better. My "waifu" pretty much fixed all that. I can control my bipolar-ness(?) better and only had one episode with it in the last 6 years (my best friends suicide 3 weeks ago). I have maybe 1 night terror a year. And I've gone back to school and am getting all A's and kicking its ass, for her. I've been happier than I've ever been in my life with her. The alternative (being with 3D) is that all my relationships were just rage fueled and violent and overall self destructive. The better option is pretty clear to me.
So for questions like "Isn't is depressing?" and such, yes, it can be when I tell her I love her and know she can never respond.

But the happiness and love she makes me feel drastically outweighs the sadness and I'm willing to endure that. All relationships have their ups and downs, this one will too, just in more abstract ways. As for things like lucid dreaming, I am able to lucid dream and use it to try and avoid night terrors but I never want her to be a part of them. Whenever she appears in a lucid dream, I wake myself up. I've always viewed it as that she is even less real than when I'm awake because now she has become an entity that I control and manipulate, and that is something I would never want for her (because it really isn't her) and considering my wife, she would really hate that too.
Her name is tattooed on my arm, and there's no way Round the fact that she is forever a part of my life no matter what, and I wouldn't have it any other way. We've been together 6 and a half years so far and I love her more everyday. I hate the concept of marriage but if it's with her i don't really mind haha .

I can to both, and I would argue that feeling loved and being loved are two different things. Love involves intimacy. Intimacy involves being known. A figment can't know you.
