Just go to Craigslist, lots of good finds. Offer $25 more for them to deliver it. Or look up how to build one out of wood.

Hang on bro. I'm prototyping a design to allow anyone to build a bombproof rack/cage with nothing but a hand saw and common 2x4 studs.

You'll only need to buy one set of $35 brackets. I'll post the design online as open hardware so you can have the brackets fabricated locally or purchase them online.

This is legit, I'm a mechanical engineer, etc.

Pic related.

those are some rough welds man...
>>
>>35329557
That's why I'm doing this.

The common diy design, if it fails, will fail catastrophically. Mine won't fail. It takes 95% of the craftsmanship out of the picture and uses the most common structural member ever used in the history of humanity.
>>
>>35329208
Is a very basic design, just build your own out of stone and wood.
>>
>>35329562
It's only a mock up to work out the design. I plan on making a proper fabrication over Christmas holidays.
>>
>>35329620
do i have to leave humanity behind to build one ?

How did you come across muh penis?
>>

What about safeties?
It seems like it's fixed height.
What about lower hooks for bench press?
Will the plans be in metric?

Can I get in on a mailing list or something?
>>
>>35329684
The while thing slides up and down. Height is set by the jack stud (the one on the left) which is removable. So you have one pair of Jack studs for each different height that you want. Seems backwards but $8 worth of select quality 2x4 stud will provide 6-8 different heights.

Watch /r/homegym over the next few weeks.
>>
>>35329721
Yeah, I lurk it sometimes, luckily it's a slow board
>>
>>35329636
word. It's a pretty cool design man - just switching out the vertical 2x4 for different rack heights and bench etc? and why you have two plates on the front instead of 1 tho?

Additional questions
Looks like a cool concept. Maybe you should look into pattenting it, but I don't know how that really works Is the 'jack stud' secured at the bottom?
Does your system include a way to hold the intire rack together, or is it just for the hooks?
>>
>>35329464
craiglist isn't used as much in other countries
>>
>>35329792
This isn't going to make me rich (never mind the liability of have as a licensed engineer) so I'm not worried about a patent. I'd rather give back to the /fit/izens which have been so helpful to me and hopefully lower the barrier to entry for other would-be lifters.

Plus the benefits of open source.

It may need a holder at the bottom for the jack stud. I haven't built a full squat-height version yet. And this design is just for the bar support. Building the king stud frame is left as an exercise for the reader.
>>
>>35329748
I just made it out of a piece of 1" flat bar. I'll probably release two initial designs. One made of a single piece of flatbar stock (for easy diy fabrication) and on made from sheet metal (which could be job shopped by a fabricator with a waterjet or laser table). The latter wouldn't have a gap in the front.
>>
>>35329897
So you found a solution for hooks on a wooden rack without the need to drill 100 holes.
Still a nice concept, but it's not a solution for those without a rack, as I understand it.

No but there's always a local equivalent. If your in the UK then try Gumtree. In Ireland try adverts.ie. anywhere else just looks for variations on "buy&sell or Online Adverts"

I was planning on building one from uni strut so it can be taken down and re built elsewhere but I haven't got the space right now, waiting until I move out. Pic telated but I'm sure you already knew what it was.
>>
>>35329992
That looks like something you could make shelves with, not something you would build a squatrack out of

Plus fasteners and a drill or hammer I assume? Any plans for the rack itself? Incorporating safety bars? I like your idea btw, I'm just curious.
>>
>>35330022
I'm sure it can take a big vertical load... when attached to the wall. I wouldn't trust something made out of 4 of those things, freestanding.
What's the biggest size you can get those things in?
>>
>>35330046
Did you build that? Is it stress tested?

Only the problem of securely supporting the barbell with wood interest me. There are tons of plans online for building the frame....I have no value to add there. I may include a copy/pasta reference design if interest warrant it.

Built this a couple years ago. There's a pull-up bar at the top, but I didn't take a picture when I put it in. 2x6 wood.
