Has /fit/ ever gotten pain in their rib cage like 3 or so inches below their nipple? It's not too bad, but doing crunches hurts and gets decent twinge when I lay down to bench.

Go to a doctor.
He'll listen to your chest and be able to tell.
Might send you for a chest x-ray just to be sure, probably nothing serious but get it checked out to be safe.

Take your knuckles and run them hard against the inside insertions of your chest, right next to the sternum. See if that hurts. If it is, it's possible you are just right there and occasionally tugging too hard on it
