Thanks to the participation-medal and self-esteem-before-all-else method of parenting that has gone on for the past 20-ish years pretty much every under-30 individual believes they deserve the top-tier version of anything they care about. And in return all they have to offer is "what's on the inside" as if your personality is anything but a swirling mass of narcissism, entitlement, and childlike spoilt bitterness. It doesn't matter that you look like a potato balanced on popsicle sticks, you deserve your 6+ foot lean muscled stylishly dressed sharp jawed athlete guy or your DD bubble-butted 108lb VS model-looking fucks-like-a-pornstar girl, and don't let anyone else tell you anything different! Thanks to the media (TV, ads, magazines, social media, porn, etc.) we expect more from our SO's than ever before, while the obesity crisis, lower real-wages, and being generally shittier people means we offer less than ever before. We know we value the thin/fit over others (all else being equal) but I'm the exception! I'm different! I deserve this person no matter how much of a disparity there is between us! The rules never changed, but a lot of people stopped believing (or never did) they would be held to those rules. So they wait, they wait for that ideal person to fall from the heaven's and give them a fairytale ending rejecting any more realistic option that presents itself. On the off chance they chase after said ideal person, they will inevitably be turned down, at which point the world will somehow be to blame, not them. Never them. They are perfect, and they would sooner lash out at any suggestion otherwise to remain living in the illusion that they have helped create, than to admit maybe they aren't the best on offer and using this knowledge to better themselves and pursue their version of happiness.
