It's not American thing, it's an internet thing. Almost no one in real life cares about "fatphobia" and the few that do are mostly ignored.
That's one problem with the internet. It can make ideas appear far more widespread than they really are. Fat acceptance is tiny movement that almost no one cares about. However, the internet (especially Tumblr) makes it seem like it's this huge movement.
