Well Intelligence as measured by IQ isn't just relevant in academic careers, far from it. And problem solving ability is highly related to intelligence and relevant in every society.
We know that general schooling increases mental test scores, in tests that measure problem solving as well as knowledge type tests, but that can't be called a 'focus on academic careers' and it also can't explain the world wide patterns in group differences in IQ especially if we take into account the group differences within developed western states.
