A lot of gut fauna has evolved to eat only a specific thing. Some only each a certain protein, some only eat a certain fat, some only eat sugar.
Likewise, many types of these bacteria have evolved with humans and can send chemical sognals through the digestive system that the brain picks up as 'cravings' for food with those ingredients. The more of a type of bacteria, the louder their 'cravings' are.
This goes 2 ways though. If you stop eating the high calorie shit and focus on a healthier diet, these bacteria will stope reproducibg at the same rate and the cravings will over time subside. Could be months or years but they will.
And at the same time, bacteria which feed on the healthier foods will begin to reproduce more and create cravings for their needed food. So after a few years you can barely stand a big mac but that lean chicken and leafy salad you have for tonight makes your mouth water.

What constitutes a salad? Leafy greens? Well if they're covered in croutons, friend chicken strips and half a gallon ranch it won't be healthy at all. However according to this study we're quoting they're seeing salads as a significant food for healthy people.
Salad is on the menu for me about twice a month, usually when I have leftovers but not enough for a whole meal. It can be part of a healthy diet but it isn't an indicator or needed.

The thing is, a thin person is someone who succeeded. They gained some weight, they noticed it and dieted it away and only close relatives had time to notice. If you are fat, it's because you already failed at dieting because you lack willpower, intelligence or information. So when you make a study of effectiveness of dieting, you probably do it on fat people who are a self-selected group of people who fail at dieting and what do you know, the results say that diets fail.

Assuming they each weigh in at around 160kg (which is probably an underestimate but I'm trying to be reasonable here), and assuming around 50% body fat (again, underestimate), that gives us a total fat content of around 720 kg! Oh my.
Now, the energy content of fully oxidized fatty acids, which make up most of the fat in these whales, is around 38 kJ/g (Lehninger, Principles of Biochem 6e, ch. 17). So totaled up, they've got 27,400,000 kJ of energy stored as fat. Woah nelly!
Now i'm not a physicist or engineer so here's where the math gets a little dodgy. 27.4 MJ is the same amount of energy that is released by 6.8 kg of TNT being set off. (via Wikipedia's article on TNT Equivalent) Or alternatively, 27.4 MJ is around 7.6 kWh, and given that the average person in the US uses around 11,000 kWh per year (via US Energy Information Administration) this amount of fat would be enough to keep the lights on for a random person for just over 6 hours.
